Credit card ... is your limit set too high? |
|
Hi people.
I saw a news item which said that the UK government was going to make it illegal for credit card companies to increase peoples credit limits without their asking for it.
I thought that raising your credit limit was only done with your permission/consent...
Do you think the UK government is making a good choice/decision by doing this?
Will such a measure help people get control over their personal finances and help the credit crisis in the long term?
Happy myLotting!

2. lologirl2021 (1624) | 9 months ago | I cant even belive that credit card companies were rising someones limit without there permission or knowing. I would be so mad if that would happen to me.
The goverment is making a great choice, rising someones limit without them knowing can make there life hard because they know are paying probably more for jsut a minium payment. it will help the credit card crisis because they wont have to worry about so much money that people owe them. If they rise the limit then alot of people wotn be paying as much as they should be. Enjoy Mylotting

3. poppoppop111 (3231) | 9 months ago | my credit card company raised my limit once with out asking me. doesn't matter to me cause i don't use credit often and when i do i pay it off right away. i do think they raise it to try to make more money and i think it can encourage people to spend more and go into debt faster. but i think no one should even own a credit card if you can't control your spending and manage your money. but i do think they shoulnd't raise your limit with out your permission

| 6. Ladarzak (19) | 9 months ago | It's done if you are not spending as much as the credit card companies hope you will spend. All depends on your credit rating, at least here in Canada. I can't imagine it's much different elsewhere. Friend of mine had this happen to him numerous times and he had to insist they stop it.
No point carrying around a bunch more risk if the card is stolen -- for those who pay it all off. Many do not and walked around maxed out most of the time. I imagine they're unlikely to get a limit increase.

7. lingli_78 (10195) | 9 months ago | mine is alright and i can still control it... anyway, my limit is never increased without me giving the permission to the bank to do it... they always send me a letter first and let me know when they want to increase my limit... and they usually do a credit check on me first before they will grant it... with my other bank, it is even harder... i have to request it myself every time i want my limit increased... take care and have a nice day...

8. jesssp (1222) | 9 months ago | The limit on my most used credit card increases every so often and that's mostly fine with me. I put everything I buy on that card so I can get the Airmiles - I've even put a car on it. I always pay my balance off as I go so I never accumulate interest. The only thing that bothers me about having a higher than necessary limit is what could happen if someone steals the card or number. The more credit you have the more damage the thief could do. That's really the only reason I would agree with for this law.
As far as I'm concerned credit card companies are businesses and businesses are there to make money. If people choose to use their services then they should be aware of the risks involved and of the consequences of letting credit get away from them. It's their responsibility to understand these things, not the banks or the government, that's why credit is only offered to adults who meet the requirements - they should be able to comprehend it. If people are that irresponsible with money to begin with they will just find a way to get more credit. I don't feel that they are only spending that much because the limit was raised w/o their knowledge.

10. emilie2300 (1144) | 9 months ago | I belive my credit limit was set to high. I had to file bankrupcy. And its my fault. Every time I paid on my bill they would keep highering my limit. So I splurge and ran myself into debt. So now I am paying for it and it sucks. I think they should ask your permission to increase or not. It may help people out to control there selves I wish I had that option but they didn't and still ain't
