Aurora Borealis

I have never seen the real Aurora Borealis, just on TV and pictures. As I recall, it's coming from Alaska or the North Pole.

I've never saw any. They are really beautiful.

Auroras, sometimes called the northern and southern lights or aurorae are natural light displays in the sky, usually observed at night, particularly in the polar regions.They are also referred to as polar auroras. In northern latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora borealis, named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for north wind, Boreas by Pierre Gassendi in 1621. The aurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the sky from the Northern Hemisphere, the chance of visibility increasing with proximity to the north magnetic pole, which is currently in the arctic islands of northern Canada. Aurorae seen near the magnetic pole may be high overhead, but from further away, they illuminate the northern horizon as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the sun was rising from an unusual direction. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and from March to April. The northern lights have had a number of names throughout history. The Cree people call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits."

I've never seen an Aurora Borealis or Aurora Australis. These phenomena appear only on higher latitudes, within, or near the Polar Circles (weaker Aurorae can be seen in places like Norway or Tasmania).
The Aurorae occur because of the magnetic solar field interaction with the upper atmosphere layers, or something like that... I can't remember for sure... It's either the solar magnetic field either the Van Allen belts of particles surrounding the Earth that interact with the terrestrial atmosphere.

Me tooo!!! I wanna see more than a red glow in the sky!!!!

I saw it a few times when I was a child. (I live in Ohio up by Lake Erie) I remember asking about it, what it was, and all of the neighbors came to see it from our fields because of the unobstructed view. It was so pretty shimmering it's colors in the sky! I don't think I've seen them since childhood, there's probably too many streetlights and all to get a clear view. They were just hovering over the horizon of the lake and you could only see a part of them. I would love to go further North and see the whole effect when the whole sky is like that, it must be really awesome!!

i was not sure what aurora borealis mant so i had it googled.yup,you are right .the pictures are breathtaking.like you,i havent seen a real one or maybe it is because i never gave much attention to it.
