Salmonella outbreak in peanut butter. Does anyone know which brands recalled? | | I just heard about the salmonella outbreaks in peanut butter. I don't watch the news often, so maybe I'm a little behind on this subject.
Does anyone know which brands of peanut butter have been recalled?
We use Skippy, Jif and Peter Pan. Are those brands on the list?
And, can someone give me a link to the list of recalled peanut butters that may have been affected by the salmonella outbreak?
Would very much appreciate it.

Most companies who were using the "bulk" brand have all pulled their products. If it is on the shelf in your grocers it should be ok, at least here in the US where they jumped on it rather quickly. We use Jif, and haven't had any issues.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | Thanks for the info. I have checked it out.
Here is an excerpt from one of the links on that page.
Excerpt:
"All containers, varieties and types of Peter Pan peanut butter, all products containing Peter Pan brand peanut butter, and all jars of Great Value brand peanut butter bearing a product code that begins "2111" are potentially contaminated.
Potentially contaminated products include 3/4 ounce and 1.1 ounce single serving packs of Peter Pan brand peanut butter. All of these products contain peanut butter that was manufactured in ConAgra's Sylvester, Georgia plant. Retailers and institutions possessing the products described should not serve or sell them. Any consumer possessing any of these products should discard them."
I checked the cupboard. We don't have any Peter Pan in stock at the house this week.
But, we have used it recently, in the past few months.
Here's the additional link if anyone wants to check out more info on the FAQ page. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/pnutbuqa.html#size
Thanks for the link!

Anora_Eldorath (2605) | 10 months ago | It's really scary you know. What's more scary is the FDA was aware of the contamination early on and didn't do anything. (See article link above). I'm trying to switch to all organic but we still get WIC so I have to get the brands that WIC will pay for, and as you said old reliable JIF.

Thanks for the extra links by the way.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | I'm very familiar with WIC. I was on WIC during the duration of my pregnancy and when my baby was small.
I did appreciate all their help.
Thanks for the helpful links.
Recently, I saw a really good review about Peter Pan on a TV show which was apparently produced before the Peter Pan recall.
I am glad to have this info now.
Luckily, noone in my home was affected or became ill.
We were so fortunate.
What concerned me was the idea that there might be some families out there who had bought the contaminated brands in bulk and who still might not be aware of the situation.
I hope they are rechecking just to be sure.
If I had any of that stuff in my house, it would be in the trash now!

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | Skippy's always a good brand.
I'm so out of it on current events. The only thing I'm following these days are the CSpan hearings about food contamination and the AIG bonuses scandal.
| |
|
|
Ruthep (5929) | 10 months ago | I watch and read news alot. But I don't watch CSpan. Makes my head hurt.

|
beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | We just got cable recently and CSpan has become one of my new obsessions. I get so tired of the watered down version that some shows offer.
I feel like I'm getting the real scoop on stuff.
For instance, like this whole mess with the AIG bonuses.
I was watching the CSpan hearings with the current head of AIG.
It was a very eye opening experience.
Most people don't know that the debt owed by AIG is currently being repaid and that AIG has a solid plan in place for repayment.
The local news just spins it out in the most tantalizing way to sell more ad space.

Ruthep (5929) | 10 months ago | That is why I read a lot on the internet. You see all this stuff on the news and than read up on it and it is only part of the story. As for the bailouts I don't think them paying the money back is really the point. People are just sick of all these businesses that ran their companies the way they did just get money because they were stupid. They all got greedy and made bad decisions and now they want to get bailed out. And our country doesn't have the money to begin with. They are selling bonds to China to fund the bailouts.
| |
|
|
beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | It's a big stinkin' mess! That's for sure.
The bailout! The bonuses.
There's no good part of it.
My worry is that the whole thing is being blown out of proportion to over shadow the Obama Presidency and what Pres. Obama is actually trying to do to help get the economy back on track.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | The news people do it to sell more ad space.
I don't really think they could care less about getting to the truth or uncovering anything as long as they are uncovering more profits for themselves.
They don't care whose life they wreck.
But, then again, I'm sure there are reputable journalists out there.
I'm just talking about the stations that sensationalize stories to the umpteenth degree.
For no good reason at all!

| | 4. danishcanadian (20673) | 10 months ago | I just asked my husband, and he said "about 100 different brands" the largest peanut distributer in the USA, even selling to Nestles, and Kellogs. A $hitpot full of brands that were recalled." I'm typing verbatim, here. He's sitting on the couch right next to me. I don't like peanut butter so I'm not that worried, but he loves the stuff. There are even problems with Canadian peanut butter.

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | It's a really sad situation, especially for us.
Peanut butter is one of my daughter's favorite foods.
And, she's at that very picky age where there are only just a handful of foods she wants to eat.
Getting rid of peanut butter would be tough for us.
It's very economical and we can actually get her to eat peanut butter.
And, ordinarily, it's very healthy.
P.S. I hate generic brands of Peanut butter.
I'm way picky over peanut butter taste.
My daughter gets her picky pallette from me.
I can't bad tasting food.
Just never thought that I would have to worry about contaminated foods.
Well, there was that catastrophe with the contaminated tomatoes.
Or, was it contaminated peppers. I can't remember.
But, a lot of people here in the US got sick over it.
Some people have even died over the peanut butter contamination issue.
I hope Pres. Obama can revamp our food safety system like he promised.

| | 5. cyberfluf (2622) | 10 months ago | Oh my God, that's awfull! I had no idea this was going on. I don't live in the United States, so that must have had something to do with it either. Even though, due to globalisation matters it wouldn't be awkward if it has spread around the globe. Good thing you brought this under our attention, thanks!

beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | I'm shocked too! I live in the US and there was nothing about it on my local news.
I don't watch news too often, but most times, I do catch the local updates, first five minutes of the show and noone had said anything.
I had to watch CSpan to find out!
It's a real tragedy that so many here in the US got sick over it.
Plus, they mentioned that some foods containing contaminated alfalfa sprouts (like the stuff used in health foods and such) have been equally making people sick here in the US and have even killed 2 people.
But, you won't hear that on the news, cause it doesn't sell ad space.
It's a sad situation.
I hope more people will become aware of food safety.
So sad when people suffer over these situations.

| | 6. Vladilyich1 (1189) | 10 months ago | It was dozens of brands. The peanut company was one of the largest in the country and just sold peanuts and peanut products to many different manufacturers like Kellogs (Keebler) and Nestle (Drumstick ice cream) among many others. All of these companies began recalling their products.
| |
| |
|
|
beautyqueen26 (9134) | 10 months ago | This is the first that I'm hearing about it. I've been so out of the loop on national events.
I'm just glad that they did the recalls otherwise we'd still be buying tainted peanut butter.
The government has to mandate those recalls and not rely on the news outlets to spread the word about the tainted food products.
This reminds me so much of the tainted tomatoes last yeart.
That was another scary situation, cause we ate tomatoes all the time.
So many people got sick.
Not a good thing at all.
I watched some of the hearings on CSpan about this situation, with the heads of Kellogs and such.
They all seemed to want to do their part to keep foods safe.
But, apparently, someone in those companies knew about the contamination before the products went to market and just dropped the ball and didn't tell anyone.
Guess they figured the situation would resolve itself.
It did. But, in a very bad way.

| | 7. muscles4me (9040) | 10 months ago | OH NO Not again. What gets me is in these tuff economical times some people are eating peanut butter sandwichs for lunch to cut back on expenses. Skippy is my favorite but I tend to buy whats on sale. I often will buy plain label and you can tell a difference but since I do not care for it as much it will last me longer because I will use less.

onedaysoon (413) | 10 months ago | I believe he is talking about the original scare. Thankfully there is not a new one. Plus, at the time they did say that the jarred peanut butters were never effected, just the peanut/peanut butter containing products. So, you should be safe. They often have coupons for Skippy online or often directly from the website that you can print out. So, you can get the brand you like.

muscles4me (9040) | 10 months ago | Thank you so much for letting me know. I do not have a printer but my neighbor does and I do have some printer paper here so maybe she would print one out for me. Or else our Kmart right up the street has computers and they allow you to be on there for 30 minute at a time and can print 5 papges I believe.

| | 8. onedaysoon (413) | 10 months ago | Wow, You really do not watch much TV, do you. The recall was from last year. It was on the news, radio, jokes about it on comedy shows. It was everywhere. It has since died down, because it has been so long and they tied it down to the one company. The largest peanut supplier in the U.S. It affected natural and not as natural peanut products. But, it never effected any jarred peanut butters. It was peanuts in things, like peanut butter cookies, crackers with peanuts, etc. I am quite surprised you didn't hear about it. But, that is good you don't watch TV. I try not to, but I always do. Since, it has been so long your store should not be selling anything that was affected.

| | 10. Darkwing (7519) | 10 months ago | I haven't heard about a salmonella outbreak in peanut butter but I find it difficult to understand how it can be so? What causes the salmonella outbreak in peanut butter... peanuts shouldn't carry it, but I guess the butter could... don't know. I would be interested to read a report on this. I would think if it is throught the butter, then ALL peanut butters would have to be recalled.
Brightest Blessings... sorry I'm not of too much help here, but it's the first I heard of it, my friend. Thank you for the heads up!
