How would you react to someone opening your mail? email this discussion to a friend?

I have had this happen to me so many times..... When I was growing up I had no privacy, all my letters and parcels were always opened and I would never dare say anything despite the fact that I would be very upset about it.

My diaries were read also... It was horrible, I stopped using diaries and if I received cards or presents through the post I would always know that they had been opened and it would take the fun out of it and I would feel greatly violated... there was never any privacy.

I later found out that it was illegal to open an other's mail but even then I would never approach my mother who was a very angry person about opening my mail (she was angry and nasty to the point of abuse) I was very afraid of her growing up...

I'm a grown up now with my own home and I open my own mail.... I still don't feel safe having a diary though:(

My brother has just phoned me saying that his mail has been opened!!! He is nearly 18 years old and it is not he first time it's happened for him too... He questioned my mother, something I never did and the response was what I thought it would be...A mouthful of abuse..and you're left feeling you're in the wrong!!!

I told him next time it happens to go to the police!!!

He is now using my address to have his mail sent as it is safe.

How would you react if ANYONE opened your mail?
Would love to know what you think or would do xxxx

Our email is just like a letter that is sealed for us to open and not for any one else whether that person is a close friend, a family, or relative. Therefore, if somebody opened my email account without my permission, I would really get angry, and that person will hear from me. It becomes nasty when that person not only open but use it for something. I hope that the one who open and read your mail will learn the lesson on privacy and asking permission!lol

Yes I would be extremely upset if someone was to open my emails too without my permission.
What would you do if it was letters sent through the post?

Thank you for responding xxx

I don't mind people opening my mail at home, but thats just because I ask them too, and I know that I can trust them. However if anyone else was to open it I would be absolutly furious, and if I knew who did it I would phone the police. Its disgusting that your mum would do something like that, she clearly has no respect for boundries.

I really think its a violation of privacy for someone to that even if it is a family member or friend. When I lived with my parent my dad used to open my mail and my mom would always get mad. I still have some mail that gets sent there but its not opened anymore. privacy is a big deal to me. I had a dairy once in high school and some "friends" found it, I got in trouble for something I had put in. Since then I have never put my private thoughts or actions on paper.

Everyone should have privacy, we can not interupt, even interfere in the privacy of people affairs. Very polite and interupt.

That is against the law too. I would see to it that the person was given a fear of prison term. I don't play with my mail nor my packages. I would lose it hard on someone.

It is hard to say this one. My mom would open our mail too, unless it was from family members. Until we turned 18, then she would just hand us the envelopes. When I asked, she just said she wanted to make sure, I wasn't getting into anything that she thought I could not handle. Grown and away now, I do not care if someone in my home opens my mail, we have no secrets here. And know what I open my son's mail, but he is just turning 2, and it was mostly birthday cards. I do understand the privacy issue, and I think until you leave your home your "legal guardians" have the right to open your mail. I may be wrong about this, but the law gets iffy when it comes to family issues.
