I'm too busy....Is there ever a reason to not cook a good meal for your family? |
|
I'm a cook. I'm told that I'm a great cook...I catered for years and I love homemade food. I don't work full time outside the home but am as busy as most with things in the community. I have two grown children that had serious allergies and had to be on special diets for years and we all have had asthma. My hubby is extremely allergic to nuts so I have to watch that as well. So I learned early on that food made at home was not only safer for my family but more nutritious and cheaper by far. Now in this day and age of everyone going everywhere I see that people don't cook much anymore. In fact I see so many young people that don't like to cook hardly at all!! I find that apalling! I mean, is it really that hard to throw a homecooked meal together? Is it really that hard to feed your family more nutritious food? I am really confused about this...I think that people; especially in this day of the health nut; would want to eat better... So tell me....do you cook or not? Do you cook part of the meal and get part of it at the store? Do you just get what's convenient because your life is so hectic?

1. okkidokitokki (1387) | 9 months ago | I love to cook, and I am pretty good at it. The problem with cooking is that it produces dirty dishes and I hate to clean.
I do usualy cook one meal a day, and we will eat the leftovers later that day or the next day.
But there are times that I just would rather get something than dirty my kitchen.

2. savypat (7650) | 9 months ago | I cook but I get really busy so I cook large meals and then just modify them a little for two or three days. I do use cooked chicken or sea food from the store often, but most I make from scratch.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | That's a great time saver isn't it savy? I love to do that as well...I like to cook a major meat source like roast or chicken or something like that so that I can make goulash,sandwiches..etc...it's a terrific way to get many meals from one sitting.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | It's sad really...my family doesn't look much like I cook well at all...they are all very slim. I on the other hand, am always fighting my weight. It's not the cooking but a health condition I'm working on with herbs.

4. Jae2619 (1135) | 9 months ago | I am a stay at home mom, and I cook day in and day out at home. Some days, I cook 3 meals, other days, I can get away with just cooking two. We don't eat out but once in a blue moon and don't eat just sandwiches inless we are in a total time crunch. I have a menu that I follow for the month with some alternative days where things can be switched around. I can't say I love to cook, because I don't. I cook because it's the easiest and cheapest way in our household. I know many people who eat out just because they work all day long and don't wanna go home and cook a big meal, which is understandable. I think it's all about personal preference and what works best for each family or person.

|
|
hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | It sounds like your doing the best for your family in spite of your preference to do something other than cooking. I think your right...but I don't think most people realize it's not much more time to cook homemade than to eat out or even go through the drive through.

5. Anora_Eldorath (2598) | 9 months ago | I'm in graduate school and a stay at home mom right now, but I always manage to find the time to cook for my family. About the only time we've run into eating out on the run is if a doctor's appointment lasts longer than it should. Then it's something quick on the way home so my husband can get to work. 6. checapricorn (9963) | 9 months ago | I am not a good cook but I grew up with a Mother who cooks all the time for the family. We don't go out for dinner a lot before and I am thankful since from that, I really love vegetables and home made food.
Now that I am married, I am learning but my husband loves cooking so, I am assisting and learning from him too. I have a lot of friends who don't cook in their house and just rely on eating out and kids grow in that lifestyle and eating unhealthy food. NOt all the time for sure but you know kids, the most that will attract them are the less nutritious food!

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | This is true. I have two great kids that are grown and now they eat more junk than they ever did when home but still love to eat homemade...as long as I make it!

OreoCookie3 (18271) | 9 months ago | My dad taught me to cook when I was 11. Actually younger.. I was helping him make Thanksgiving dinner when I was 7. I helped dad make the stuffing. I learned almost all I know from my dad. He was a great cook. He cooked for a hunting lodge during dear season a lot during my growing up years. He also worked sometimes as a cook on board a fishing boat. I just picked it up from him.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | That's awesome...I learned from my grandma...she raised me from the time I was 9 with the help of my grandpa....I got to be a great cook because of her....the first thing I made was gravy...pulled a chair up to the stove the first week my siblings and I moved in....still my fav meal...

7. OreoCookie3 (18271) | 9 months ago | I can cook, and I like to cook when the family wants to eat a home cooked meal.. but I might only cook once a week because the family doesn't want anything home cooked. My son in law would rather eat a can of ravioli, or a can of beef stew. If it comes in a can he likes that best. I will make a vegetarian dinner for my daughter and I sometimes... but even she hardly eats supper much. So I end up eating something quick and easy.
I sometimes make a good meal anyway and just put it in the refrigerator so that I can get some and warm it up when I want it. My family just isn't into too much home cooked foods.

8. xParanoiax (4937) | 9 months ago | I see less of this, because my state is pretty rural and over half of it is comrpised of farms. But I do see some...I find it a bit ridiculous too, because you never know when you might need this kind of skill. I mean honestly...cooking is one of the very basic skills of life.
I can cook. I'm told that I'm good at it, as well. I'm also growing a good portion of my family's food this year. THIS, for me, is convenience. It'll cut down on costs this year for me and mine, it'll even earn us some scraps of money if we do it right, and in years to come it'll end up getting us free food if we keep at it.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | Exactly...I used to have a huge garden until health issues put a stop to it...so this year I'm having raised beds. I have it all planned out and my hubby and I are in the process of getting supplies to build it. I wanted something that would hold a lot of vegetables....and I want some heirloom varieties if I can get them. I'm so thrilled. I really miss good vegetables..

9. dorisday1971 (2036) | 9 months ago | I do cook for the meals at home. There are times though when we just prefer to eat in a restaurant or fastfood chain. That usually happens on Sundays or when we are all out of the house that going home to eat is impractical. I love cooking too.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | Hey Doris...love your name by the way...she is my absolute favorite movie star... Anyway I'm like you...if there is anytime that I will go to a restaurant it's when we go out of town to shop. But I still like to eat at a sit down restaurant. This way I can get protein and vegetables....and relax!

10. deebomb (8979) | 9 months ago | I believe that since so many women work and there is a fast food or two on every corner it is so easy to not cook when these women come home tired from work. I don't think that many young people are taught how to cook any more. So many people's lives are so busy running the kids to this and that that they don't have time to teach their kids to cook. I do cook and for the most part enjoy it. With my family having such different schedules and not all being home at the same time for meals I have learned to make TV dinners for them. Home cooking is so much better and healthier than any thing from restaurants. With home cooking You can control what goes in to your food. I'm lucky that not any one has any allergies.

hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | That's fortunate! I too think that homemade is better. And it really doesn't take too much time if you plan ahead. I like to freeze single portions so that I can start with a great main dish and then just add salad and bread for a meal.
| |
|
|
deebomb (8979) | 9 months ago | That's what I do. I fix a meal for one time then freeze it for later. I usually fix extra so that here is enough for at least three meals. I even do some sides like potatoes and pasta dishes.
| |
|
|
hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | That's a great way to always have good food isn't it?! My son used to love to raid the freezer when I wasn't home from work when he got home from school. He would fix his own supper a lot of times and save me the work. Now if I could have just got him to clean up his mess......
| |
|
|
deebomb (8979) | 9 months ago | Yes I know that one. It is hard to get the boys to clean up after them selves. keep getting after my grandson to wash up his dishes. He is getting better.
| |
|
|
hornswaggled (1917) | 9 months ago | Yeah I think in that respect I screwed up. I should have made them more into kitchen work than I was. I did make them do chores and dishes were one of the things but I think I should have made some more interesting ways for them to do it so it wasn't such a drudge. I hated doing dishes when I was little too but my grandma really believed that we should all pull our weight so she would get her banjo out when we were working and play some songs we could sing to. I find that when I'm in the kitchen I still sing to myself. I wonder if this is something my kids will remember about me?
