Prescription pill or the 'patch' to quit smoking?? |
|
I have been trying to quit smoking for more times than I can count. I have a prescription for Chantix but am afraid to take it. I have tried the nicotine patch but that did not really help stop my cravings. What did you use to help you stop smoking or, what are you using or doing now to help you quit? Is it working???

1. moneymommy (1797) | 9 months ago | Ok, this is my problem as well. I am getting ready to quit smoking again. The easiest time that I ever had quitting was last year cold turkey. The cravings are pretty much gone in 3 days. But you will have to suffer those 3 days. Just hang in your room or something. I think thats the way I am going to do it again.

wisconsin26 (2006) | 9 months ago | Yes it is 3 days to get it all of your system but alot of people break after that third day or at the end of that week because they are so used to putting something in there mouths to inhale I guess if you could find something in place of that it would be perfect...But what except for food right, people say try gum but that don't work so well...

katsmeow1213 (4889) | 9 months ago | No it is not just 3 days. Withdrawal symptoms peak around 3 days, but it can take 3-5 weeks for all withdrawal symptoms to disappear, and even then you'll never totally stop craving cigarettes. Yes the first 3 days are the hardest, and when those strong cravings hit it is difficult to fight them off. You need to have very strong motivation to quit and stay quit, and you also need to tell everyone you see that you are quitting... that way they're going to hold you to it in a way.

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | 3 days, 3 months, 3 years, to get it out of your system or for the cravings to quit is going to be so darn hard. Quitting cold turkey is not an option for me just as the gum, that didnt work for me in the least. I'll have to check out a few websites and see what they say I guess. I think one way to quit would be to work or volunteer in a cancer ward somewhere to see firsthand what smoking can do to a person. Thank you both for your input!

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | ahh, but see, i quit painting my nails about 6 months ago. i didnt like the chemicals going into my system. i've tried different cigarettes and like beer, you eventually acquire a taste for them. no smoking on the phone? THATS when i really reach for them, on the phone or on the computer. thanks for the suggestions though!!!

muscles4me (8667) | 9 months ago | Well you should ask a ninja I guess. Ninjas say no smoking while driving the ninja mobile ano no smoking while doing push ups.

3. wisconsin26 (2006) | 9 months ago | Chantix isn't anything scary to use. I used it and I did ok for the first two weeks after the third I started getting really sleepy and nausea.. My doctor suggested I take a half dose of the it.. It did help alot of not wanting that cigarette.. But than after a week of a half dose I started getting headaches they were to a point where I couldn't get out of bed or open my eyes.. So I went back to the doctor they told me they were tension headaches.. Then they sent me to physical therapy, After about three times being there I still had the headaches.. They were awful.. Finally I said to myself I'm done taking them.. The doctor has no other suggestions.. Theraphy isn't helping me maybe it's just the chantix...Sure enough the next day I woke up and I felt great have had a headache sense.. Except recently but I know I do have allergies and such.. But to be honest I was a little afraid of taking them too.. Mainly when they said you will get vivid dreams well my dreams were vivid and I tell ya they were wild a good wild too.. But they are just dreams that's all and nothing more.. They can't hurt you.. A person dreams every night and remember some and don't remember others.. So all and all it's basically a dream you remember.. But Chantix I have learned isn't for me.. So I too have to figure out another way of trying to stop smoking.. Patches don't do for me either, I get to testy.. Maybe if i lived by myself it would be a whole different story but I don't I live with a smoker and course when we do stop we will do it together just like the chantix... I wish you TONS of luck on trying to stop cause it's not easy..

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | ahh, thank you for the response! Its not the dreams that are caused by Chantix that scare me, its the commercials on tv that say it can cause depression. Lord knows, I dont need any help getting depressed with the way life and the economy is today. Also, I live with a smoker who refuses to quit which makes it even harder on me. There has got to be an easy way of doing this!!!! Good luck to you too!!

4. muscles4me (8667) | 9 months ago | I have heard that the ant depressant Wellbutrin works for smoking addiction. BUT you have to tell your doctor you want the Wellbutrin for depression because insurance won't pay for it as a non smoking medication. I find that strange but thats the way it was years ago when one of my friends wanted to stop.

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | I will have to ask about Wellbutrin. Hit 2 birds with one stone, quit smoking and ease any depression associated with not smoking or life in general! Thanks for reminding about Wellbutrin. Its worth a shot

muscles4me (8667) | 9 months ago | Good luck. I think I heard someone pay $5.71 for a pack of Marlboro's. The windy city pays close to $9.00. Thats unbelievable but all things will be taxed more. I believe soon grocerys will be taxed.

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | Thanks for your response! What kind of side effects did you have with Chantix? I've still yet to even open my bottle of it, mainly I just dust it off until I either get up the nerve to take it or just throw it out. Its going to get to the point where no one is going to be able to smoke with the prices going up so high!

4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | i tried looking for the commit losenge that are either coffee flavored or you put them into your coffee, i'm not sure which. someone had told me about them and they weren't sure either. i've checked drug stores, walmart, you name it, i cant find them anywhere. we all struggle with depression from time to time, i know i do. thats why i'm afraid to use the chantix i have in the box that is still unopened.

scarlet_woman (8839) | 9 months ago | i actually got mine from them, they had a free 24 losenge sample for awhile. they ended that, but the commit website still offers a coupon. i noticed they're hard to find local too..kind of strange.either that or it's always sold out.
| |
|
|
4pawsx4 (712) | 9 months ago | i just received a $10 off coupon for 'commit' and plan on using it. if i could only find the coffee flavored ones though, i know i would stick with them as i love coffee!

7. katsmeow1213 (4889) | 9 months ago | Go read www.whyquit.com. . That's the best quit smoking website on the net. I used it. It advices to quit cold turkey. No other method will work because all it does is prolong the withdrawal process. I quit cold turkey a week ago, and I've been 100% smoke free ever since. You can read all about my quit via the link on my profile (it's a squidoo page). It explains all about it, how it started and how I've done since I began. I hope it can encourage you to do the same.
