Gov. Grace Padaca For President? email this discussion to a friend?

A couple of weeks ago (or was it last week?), when Fr. Ed Panlilio's name was being floated around as a presidential candidate for the 2010 elections, my first reaction to that was a big NO. But then, subsequent news items mentioned Grace Padaca as her potential vice-presidential running mate. And that made me pause for thought. If people think she's good enough for VP, why the heck not for president? The thing is, like most Pinoys, Grace Padaca is almost an unknown entity to me, other than she's Isabela's governor. So I had to search the web. And you know what, the more I learn about her, the more I'm beginning to like her as a presidential bet. Think about it:

1. She's simple but smart. She was valedictorian in grade and high school, and c um laude in college. Have you seen her? This woman wears less bling-blings than your average waitress.

2. She's a dragon-slayer. Unlike Panlilio, who had the Church and church-based organizations behind him, Grace Padaca had less support in politics, and yet she defeated Faustino Dy in the elections and ended the dynastic grip of the Dy clan in Isabela province. Even when dirty COMELEC commissioners conspired to help Dy.

3. She's not media-hungry and publicity-mad. We rarely see her on tv and on newspaper photo-ops, and yet she's quietly doing her job in the background. She ended illegal logging in Sierra Madre, eventhough it meant 30,000 of her voters would lose their jobs.

4. She's the poster child of people with disabilities. She has polio. But she's proof and living testament that being disabled isn't a hindrance to success.

5. She was the 2007 awardee of the International Women Of Courage Award, which puts her in the great company of notable women like former US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. She is also one of the 2008 Ramon Magsaysay Awards winners.

6. She's clean. She's not involved in scandals or corruption allegations.

Pinoys have been clamoring for a Pinoy Obama. Heck, Jojo Binay even proclaimed himself as "Obama of the Philippines". I think we were looking the wrong way. Or the wrong gender. I think Padaca is the Pinoy Obama. Barrack Obama wiped out stereotypes by becoming the first black American president. Padaca can wipe out another stereotype by becoming the first Filipino disabled president. Obama came out unsullied and clean from the dirty politics of Chicago. Padaca ended political dynasty in the dirty politics of Isabela. Obama is not a trapo. Grace Padaca is not a trapo.

Think about it. cool

If this is true and she really is a good leader, then she has what it takes to become president. She is capable by the description you just gave. A perfect example of one becoming a President.

I knew that lady. I saw her on tv during the time when she's still running for governor in Isabela. I heard all you've mentioned about her in one tv documentary show and from that time on I really admire her. Though she's been a polio victim but it didn't stop her to pursue her dream. Even with her situation she can still help and protect people. With her intelligence and guts she really deserve all the awards she received. Grace Padaca for president? Why not..

I too was impressed by her courage and determination to stand on her ground and fight with her beliefs. I was again impressed when she fought with the big political dynasty in her province and she successfully won the seat over the influential family.

My concern is just the arena where she will be joining. She has not been exposed as a political figure on a nationwide coverage like those that are vying for the position. Although she might be clean I might say she might just be swallowed by these big politicians that may undermine her political ambitions. I would suggest run for a higher position like congress, or even the senate. This will pave her way to the top than just jumping into the highest position. I do think that to be able to reach the top is show her ability to the rest of the country and not just her home province. It is also practical to gain a network of politicians that are looking for the same agenda as she is and use this to magnify her intentions.

She seems to be the perfect presidential candidate... and i might vote for her when she does run... but we all know that here in the Philippines... popularity counts... and she is only known in three or four provinces... and people living in the south have no idea who she is... so it is more likely that they will vote for a trapo who is popular...

But then... if people like us will campaign for her in our own little way... like through forums like this... she might have a chance... we can start now...

She may possess all the good qualities, she maybe qualified but I don't think she'll make it to presidency. I suggest she run for a congressional seat first for sure, she'll be winning as she's better known in her place. After making good with the lower house, then at the senate, show her abilities and be known and the next time around, she'll be a good president.

Judging by the way she's running her province, clearly she's an executive. She's a hands-on type of person. The kind of stuff that makes for a good manager. I don't think the Philippines is in need of another legislator. The Philippines needs a good manager. And there's no reason to think that becoming a legislator, whether in the Lower House or Senate, makes for a good president. The presidency is an executive function after all, far removed from legislative functions.

If you look at the last 2004 elections, two novices pulled more votes than legislators running for the presidency: FPJ and Eddie Villanueva. That is an indication that Pinoys do not equate legislative experience as a prerequisite for the presidency. One can argue that they have mass-based appeal, but if you look at SWS surveys right after that election, they also had significant number of voters from the educated electorate: the C, B, and A class of Philippine society.

Ronald Reagan was governor of California before he ran for the US presidency. And yet he became one of the most well-loved and most effective presidents in American history.

I think you can give me some more background of her. I still don't know who I will vote for the next year election. My last vote i think is a failure. Now i will have to research for the background of the person i will vote.

The floating of Among Ed for President and now Grace Padaca for higher position are the clear indications that there are still lots of people out there who are really seeking for good people to run our country.

Yes, I do agree. Why not Ed Panlilio for President? Why not Grace Padaca? Or anyone out there who are not "traditional politicians", who will not promote patronage politics and will not be engulfed by the tarnished political practices that we have now.

dear spoiledbrat802,

I think you are very right about this woman, she is wonderful. I've heard a lot from her, especially she is the governor of our neighbor province. I think she could go a long way.

But for now, it is not yet time to go on the national level. She needs more time and experiences to be hardened as a committed public servant.
