I support you but not your faith |
|
Can a person love, respect, and support a person but not the roots of their religion or faith? Could you support a Christian knowing that it was once ok to kill a girl because she was raped in the city... being in the city alone invited trouble? Or someone who is an American Islamic even though some Muslims believe it ok to kill a girl for what she might have done?
I personally think each person should be judge as a person. Race, sexual orientation, faith, income level, and religion aren't deciding factors. Behavior and attitude can kill any friendly thoughts I hold toward a person, but faith is personal in my view.
So gang..... can you support another based on who they are not what?

TLChimes (1640) | 8 months ago | Because your posts each are different and I like them both... I will answer them both.
To me... I don't want your faith or sexual orientation shoved in my face. Other wise I don't mind... as long as it isn't hurting anyone but yourself, it's your business.
Race means nothing because like you said.... you can't control who (or what color) your parents were.
Income... is all relative. I no some of the richest people who have the smallest budgets. Like you, I know some real creeps with more cash then I'll ever see.
So in short... I agree with you. LOL

gypsywoman344 (166) | 8 months ago | I agree with you both. I believe in individuality, personal morals, and love in all its forms. I also believe people can change and be positively ifluenced so that forgiveness is always an option.
In short- You are what you are to me. Your heart will prevail in your actions, A good heart and love makes you ok in by book.

2. mandoliv (445) | 8 months ago | oops forgot to mention...all faiths seem to have evolved...the Crusades were horrible, and the Islamic faith has had some dark days as well...but there are different levels of faith, or how a person practices their faith. There are Jews, then there are Orthodox Jews. And, there are some crazy radical Islamics, who really have ripped apart the religion, and there are some Christians who are just nuts as well. And, in some parts of the world, the things you mention in your post still go on.

| |
|
|
TLChimes (1640) | 8 months ago | That is so what I meant.... religions of all types have good people. They also have nuts or jerks. You can't judge by the cover of most.
It's sad how some people can accept all or refuse all instead of at least getting to know someone.
Thank you for both responces.

as long as they're not doing any wrong to me or anybody else, and they're not screwing up the environment or the natural order of things.......and they're not trying to shove their race, religion, sexual orientation, political views, right handed/left handed, hair color, physical challenges, mental challenges, country of origin, PLANET of origin, height, weight, income level, accent, social life, or personal beliefs down my throat.........and they respect me as a human being and a citizen of this planet, as i respect them, we'll get along just fine.
we're all really only here for such a short time, and we all have to live on this planet together........so we might as well get along and try to make the best of it............and make sure we leave behind a decent place for our kids to live......and their kids, and their kids, and their and so on.

5. darkjedi (4381) | 8 months ago | Hell yeah. I could support someone who is open minded and willing to learn and listen, doesnt mean you have to convert to my religion. The people I cant stand are the ones that say oh your pagan, your going to hell, you worship satan, blah blah blah. And dont once try to learn one single thing about us. I dont like muslims, but I take it on a case by case basis, same with christians and everyone else. Hell im sure there are a few pagans I wouldnt like if I met them. Any time I hear someone is a Gardnerian I tend to steer clear of them, but I have known a few good ones. And before you ask lol, gardnerian's are hmmm kinda the fundies of the pagan world. Yes we have our own lol. I dont care what color or country you are from, I will give you a chance. But if you are here illegally then I dont want to have anything to do with you, get legal or get the hell out. I dont care if you are from england or australia or mexico, and dammit learn the language, we would have to learn the language if we moved to a country that didnt speak english.

6. agrim94 (1383) | 8 months ago | I would totally go for what you said because we live in a society where there are lots and lots of religion and we are friendly with each other and never ask anyone what is your religious background before being a friend. The problem starts when someone starts to push his or her religion on to others and think theirs is supreme when everyone would think mine is and if you are not rigid or orthodox and keep sentiment of each other in mind then i dont think there would be any problem so if we have a muslim friend i got no problem in praying to allah is it is some ceremony there or going to church with my christian friend but if they expect me to be with them during the time when it is religion time then i atleast expect them to do same..if not then the problem begins.

TLChimes (1640) | 8 months ago | It's a give and take. If a friend wants love and respect then they should give it too. That's in all parts of life, not just religions. But on the same vain... we must be accepting of them and who they are.
Thank you.

7. sid556 (10499) | 8 months ago | There are parts of just about every religion that I disagree with. I don't subscribe to any man-made religion as I have my own beliefs. I don't judge others for their religion. I am friends with people from all sorts of religions. One of the religions that I've had trouble with is the Jahova's. I really, really disagree with their tactics of knocking on doors and handing out pamphlets to try to get you to read about their religion and hopefully join it. That has always rubbed me the wrong way and still does. Despite that, I do have 2 very dear friends who are Jahova's. One was an older man who I came to respect and admire long before I knew he was a Jahova. In fact, I only discovered it when he did knock on my door. By that point...we were already friends and just got a chuckle out of it. Another lady pushed me for a bit and I tried to politely tell her that I wasn't interested. Still she pushed. I finally said, " I have my own beliefs and I respect yours but I am offended that you keep pushing yours on me. You don't even know or care what my beliefs are and I would never think of pushing them on you." She disappeared for a while and then came back and told me that she just really liked me and thought that her religion would be helpful to me. She meant well. It's been years now and we grew to be good friends. I'm sure that she thinks that if I were a Jahova, I'd be better off but we don't talk aboutit. I think we've agreed that the friendship is more important.

TLChimes (1640) | 8 months ago | Wonderfully put. Great examples. Thank you! I hope the examples you put here show at least a person or two, that it isn't about a religion as much as it is about a person.
I do agree that anyone pushing their faith is too much for me. I usually tell them that my faith is my own and will stay that way.

8. celticeagle (4489) | 8 months ago | I so agree with what you are saying. I think a person should be judged on an individual basis as well. There was the Muslim father that killed his two daughters for what he thought they had done. Felt they had shamed him. This is just crazy! Life is too short. I think traditions are nice and all but this is too bizarre to even believe could happen in our present day.

TLChimes (1640) | 8 months ago | Yep. You are so right. To me it's a horrid thought that someone kills a girl for what could or might have happened. But not all Muslims follow that way of live. No more then all Christians are all heck fire and brimstone.

9. mentalward (4214) | 8 months ago | You've made the distinction very clear and I agree with you. Behavior and attitude are one thing but faith is something else altogether. Most of us were born into our religions, or lack thereof, and grew up thinking that this was right, without question. We shoud never judge anyone based on their faith and should always be accepting of them as a person unless, of course, that faith entails harming others.
I have always supported my friends, no matter what their faith is. They have their beliefs and I am no one to condemn anyone for those beliefs. If they are kind and courteous, who cares what their religion is?
My mother, once she became a "born again Christian", began to condemn me for having a little wooden statue of Buddha on a shelf in my living room. I didn't have an altar built for it! It was simply a cute, happy Buddha and it made me smile when I looked at it, simply because he looked so happy. But, my mother began calling me a "devil worshipper" because of it. I had no choice but to set her straight. I was hurt and angry that she would even THINK that about me. I wasn't worshipping the devil... heck, I wasn't even worshipping Buddha! I simply liked the statue!
I asked her to please accept who and what I was because I had no problem accepting her or her beliefs even though I did not agree with them. After that, we got along fine.
I can't tell you how many times I've had to ask so-called Christians that question everyone knows these days, "What would Jesus do?" because I was being condemned for my views and beliefs. I've met many people with different religions but have never been condemned because of who I am by anyone but these, what I like to call, "convenient Christians" who only seem to be religious when it fits into their plans.
The way I see it, it's what is in your heart that matters, not how you practice your religion.
