When deciding to go back to school to get an education would most of you agree on going to a school that is quick to get a degree or a community college that will take longer? I am attending a college that has taken me so far 2 years to attend. Some family members have decided to take a quicker route and attend schools that can offer a degree in lesser time. I think about the good points and bad points of the whole situation but then the bad point would be is that you become financially in debt paying off the school. Most people who attend these schools charge close to ten thousand dollars. Even if you apply for a grant you are still left with a balance of over six thousand or more.

If you were to decide on going back to school which route would you take and why?

I would choose a solid college education over a school that offers quick degrees. Aside from the increased cost, how much are you really learning in such a short amount of time? I have degrees in computer technology from a community college and I am confident that I received a good education there with a solid foundation that I have been able to continue to build upon.

That is good to hear. I sometimes complain about the extra courses like English, Math, etc. that you need to take but that always comes in handy as you learn more and more. It just seems foolish to go to a school that offers these quick degrees when in reality most of them have to go back to advance themselves further anyway. Most of the people I know are still paying off their loans.

First of all congratulations for wanting to continue your education and get a degree. I guess it really depends what type of degree or career goal you're looking for as some degrees can take shorter or longer depending, and nowadays one can even take on-line classes which might speed things up even faster.
I went to college straight out of high school (1973-1977) so a four year college and I got a BA degree. To me, those years actually whizzed by me at lightening speed and I was lucky that at the time, number one, college wasn't so expensive, and two, I did manage to get grant money for the full four years making my going to college absolutely free--so I was REAL lucky. Times have sure changed though as they don't even have that particular grant anymore (BEOG) and at the time too, my college system CUNY (City University of NY) didn't even have much of a tuition. If I were to opt to further my education and get a MA, I'd hunt around for an online option first to see what was available. As far as money, perhaps since I'm on disability benefits I might qualify for some special programs

Thank you, I agree with you college has become more expensive, even a community college. I think if I would have gone to college right after I would have ended up paying for something I didn't know I really wanted to do. I was kind of tired of school after high school. I think you would get some special programs if you are on disability. I have a friend who has taken online courses to get a degree in Business Administration. Right now I am trying to get a paralegal certificate along with a degree in Administration of Justice. My husband's niece is taking a course in one of these schools that will give you a degree faster but she just found out she needs to attend a regular college or another school to further herself if she wants to be a parole officer. She is already in debt 6000 dolllars but this other school is charging her more money. I told my husband at this point she should just attend a regular college to finish it off.

First off I hate school. But If I had to I would go get my degree as they have more grants now and other things going on. Plus I'm old so yeah the degree as I would at least want to use it for a couple of years the other way for me would be way to long. Your friend onlydia

Onlydia you should try to take this opportunity to go to school. Believe me there are several older kids like you and me there. lol I used to think that just the younger crowd went but I have met several people there. Hey they also have alot of jobs there too. How is it going right now finding a job?

myLot reputation of 98/100. onlydia (1609)   ranked 428 out of 1,782 in education  9 months ago

It is going so so. I hate school so I would not go back. Unless to get my GED other wise no. That is like the job I do they have a school for that and guess what? They are about as smart as a rock when it comes to printing. YOu just look at them and ask how much are you making way over what I do and they wanted me to train. I told them no. You haired him and you pay him more because of a peice of paper you train him. They fired him a year later as he thought he knew it all as he was the only one that went to school for what we do. Unless I was going to be a Nurse like you then that is good. But for somethings a lot of things on the job training is better. Your friend onlydia

I would go with the faster route though it may be more expensive. I have always hated having to spend forever studying anything.

Even thought that route is more expensive the truth is Id finish faster and be able to get a job and start paying off the debt. I really hate being indebted so I always ensure that I clear my debts as soon as possible.

My next aim would be my masters and I would not want to wait forever to go for it.

I talked to my stepdaughter and she thinks like you do that getting that degree as fast as possible is better. By the time she finishes her school she will be 40,000 in debt. She wants to start making her money ASAP too but I don't know if I would want that kind of debt hanging on me. It really takes a long time to pay off debt like that especially with interest.
