1. haricotcur (15) | 8 months ago | My first camera was an SLR Nikon camera. Right now I have Canon PowerShot A590 IS. I bought it a year ago. I am pretty much satisfied with it. It is an 8.0 megapixel (3,264 x 2,448 pixels) camera with 4X optical zoom, 2.5 inch LCD screen. You can shoot videos too. The camera is powered by two AA cells which I think is a good option than built-in Lithium ion batteries. I can easily replace AA cells unlike Lithium batteries and they are cheap too.
These days you can get even better cameras. Here are some advice which would be helpful in your research to find suitable camera:
1) Never go with Megapixel bragging. Higher megapixel doesn't mean better quality. Consider my camera, it can take pictures of resolutions twice the size of usual monitors. I will never need that much size unless I am making some big banners.
2) Bigger the CMOS sensor better the quality of the shoot. There is a CMOS chip inside the camera which does all the calculations of the image like light adjustments, exposure, etc. The bigger the CMOS size, the better it can perform.
3) Camera with raw image support is a good choice for avid photograph editors. If you like to edit your photographs or retouch them using programs like Photoshop then you would better look for cameras with RAW image capture capability. Basically RAW image is the image obtained straight from the camera shoot without any image or lightning adjustments by the camera. Its like a photo negative.
These are just some of the things you should look for. Research more on internet. Try to get some user reviews for the camera you want to buy. They can be your best advisor.
Good luck and happy shooting.

Davidarich (766) | 8 months ago | Just a note: I don't know of any 8 Mp Nikon with a CMOS sensor: it will be a CCD. Only the most recent Nikons have CMOS type sensors, and the sensor doesn't do the calculations: it receives light and converts it to an electrical charge. The calculations are handled by a separate on-board computer chip (2 in the case of some recent cameras).
The advise to look for the largest sensor is absolutely right: but misleading in that there are only 5 choices: tiny (phone cameras); small (most compact cameras) large (digital SLRs) full frame SLR) and large/medium format. All the cameras within each range have the same size sensor, so the choice a choice between sizes is really a choice is between camera types; but there are other factors, and not all cameras of the same type are equal performers.

| haricotcur (15) | 8 months ago | Thanks Davidarich, for your kind review of the comment. Sorry, but I didn't tell any Nikon cameras having CMOS sensor, I was talking about cameras in general. BTW the Nikon camera which I have is not a digital camera but 35 mm film camera which was bought 10 years ago.
Yes and thanks for correcting that, sensors don't do the actual processing. But the efficiency with which the light is taken in does depend on the quality of sensor excluding size.
Agreed with the last point. The quality of sensor manufactured varies for different companies. I think thats what you were telling there.
Well, you have a nice site Davidarich with some nice snaps.

6. gracie04 (3782) | 8 months ago | The brand of my digital camera is Canon IXUS.. It was a present from my hubby on our fourth year anniversary.. I'm quite happy with it but i have this thought of buying an inexpensive DLSR camera.. I love photography, i love taking pictures of different subjects/objects most especially cute and unique ones! But i don't have enough budget for that so i guess i need to work hundred times harder for me to buy that must have gadget!=)

| 7. sawatzky (56) | 8 months ago | Canon is the best. Don't buy anything else!
I am known as "the camera guy" at work. I always recommend Canon. Other people have bought other brands, and then they come to me to complain about them. I tell them "Well you didn't buy a Canon... that's why your camera sucks".
I know one guy who I recommended a Canon to... he went out and bought a Panasonic Lumix. All his pictures were washed out and blurry. He traded it for a Nikon. Those pictures were always too dark, and the menus were hard to navigate. His daughter wanted a new camera but she wanted a Sony like all of her friends. Then this guy started to listen to me and bought her a Canon. She didn't like it at first, but once she saw the pictures, she fell in love with it. When this guy saw his daughters pictures, he finally realized what a good picture should look like - and has been buying Canon ever since. Am I at all surprised? No.
Not one person I have ever recommended a Canon to has ever been disappointed with it.
