POW benefit claimants exceed recorded POWs |
| |
| I am all for helping Veterans that served our country. I think it is the least we can do to show we appreciated their service. But many seem to be "playing" the system: There are only 21 surviving POWs from the first Gulf War in 1991, the Department of Defense says. Yet the Department of Veterans Affairs is paying disability benefits to 286 service members it says were taken prisoner during that conflict, according to data released by VA to The Associated Press. A similar discrepancy arises with Vietnam POWs. Only 661 officially recognized prisoners returned from that war alive - and about 100 of those have since died, according to Defense figures. But 966 purported Vietnam POWs are getting disability payments, the VA told AP. http://news.yahoo.com/s/a... This is just another example of our bureaucracy being too big to know what it is really doing. It doesn't seem to me that it would be too hard to check if someone is an actual POW or not; you would think it would be plainly stated in their military service record. What do you think of this? | | | | | |

| | The operative words there are "officially recognized". Those that served & those that were "officially recognized" seem to be a HUGE difference!!! Especially those that were stationed in Cambodia...I know, we were NEVER there so they were NEVER "offically recognized" yet they served just the same!!! | | | | | | |

| | Yeah,Someone would think they would have it written on their records. Maybe it is because their wives or family is still drawing the disability that their husbands used to draw. Like a pension. My mother in law received something like a widows pension when her husband died. So maybe that is why they are more. | | | | | | |

| | Well the problem is that the VA awards benefits, but evidently does not always check the DoD list to verify applicants' claims Now that is why so many people get away with the lies they tell..They need to do their jobs or get someone who will do it correcting and start checking the Defense Department records. | | | |

| | Hi MYKL, Well all I can think of is that your goverment is not doing their job properly and getting well and truly scamed, I can't believe it is so easy to do, they should check the records and double check it before they pay out, they just taken the p*** of the realy POW who had suffered, its disgusting what people would do for money. | | The government is not geting scammed Tamara, WE THE PEOPLE ARE, because we fund the asistance through taxes, as do the military men and women too. But the worst affected of all by things like these are the Veterans and survivors who make claims and then have to fight tooth and nail for whatever benefits they receive. I wouldn't be amazed to find that DoD and VA spend as much investigating and fighting claimants than what they actually award. | | | |

| | You have to remember that there are surviving underage children and spouses that can continue to receive benefites for a certain amount of time. Kids can get it until they are 21 as long as they are in school or if the are totally disabeled they can get it longer. Spouses can get it as a retirement at retirement age. All of the facts are not being given to you. Shalom~Adoniah | | | | | | |

| | All of the facts are not being given to you. It would help if you read the article before making this claim; you didn't even examine the facts that were supplied, so how can you honestly make this statement? | | | |

| | Your right it is sick. I could not fathom that many people having served in the military doing such a thing. I served in the Navy. I did my hitch and I would very much like to see those folks punished for what they have done. More for the lie than for stealing the money. We all worked hard and saw things we can never talk about. It is disgusting. I'm sorry I did not read your link first. I thought it was just a money thing. Its not. Its an HONOR THING. They have NO HONOR! Shalom | | | |

| | Most of the time I actually enjoyed it. Some of the time it was a little scary. I went to places most women did not go. But I learned a lot, and saw a lot that I never would have if I had just stayed home! Shalom | | | |

| | I think that the government is too big to know what is going on. They do need to check these people out to make sure they are POW's. This should be done by the command they were with, not by the government. | | | | | | |

| | I have a dear friend who served her country during the Gulf War and has paid for it dearly with severe health problems. She can hardly breath and that is why she claimed for anything from her service to her country. She now draws VA benefits but has never claimed she was a POW. I say if a Veteran is eligible for benefits then they should draw it and getting to draw it is not an easy task by any means. My friend fought it longer than the Gulf War lasted before she got hers. | | | | | | |

| | I think they would do better to find out exactly who is collecting these payments. It may be some sucker that is in office. Some of these people in government are totally convinced they can get away with anything. And they usually do. Art | | | | | | |

| | So I was on the way to work Sunday and there was some program on the radio (don't know which one) and the speaker was relaying the story about a Iraqi combat vet whose job was to transport dead bodies. I'm sure you can imagine the horrors this young man witnessed. The young man did his tour and came home and as there are no hero jobs and the poor guy didn't learn any useful skills that would help him back home, he got a job working at a car wash. And shortly after he returned home he started experiencing back pain and headaches, not to mention PTSD. So he applied to the VA for disability and because he wasn't considered "combat injured" the VA denied his claim. Well, not long after the VA told him to bugger off, he quit his job at the car wash when his boss wouldn't give him memorial day off, and then got addicted to pain killers, lost his house and custody of his son and ended up homeless. All within like a year and a half of coming home, if you can believe it. Well, a senator from his state heard of the young man's plight and called the VA and asked, "Why do I have a homeless combat vet in my state?" and don't you know the VA suddenly found the young man qualified as combat injured and is now on the road to recovery. I relay the above story to make the following point: It is outrageous to me that the damn government is paying benefits to people who don't exist and yet our young men and women can't get the help they need. At some point we have to get the government under control. | | | |
