Question about Duretics |
| |
| Good morning everyone! I have a question about water pills or duretics. Are they good for you or harmful? My friend wants to go buy some because she is gaining weight and thinks she is retaining water how do we know if we are retaining water or not? I sort of watch over my friend she tends to do spur of the moment things. Can someone answer this for me please? | | | | | |

| | I've been taking a water pill for years. However, I think it's important to only get through your doctor. I have no problem with being on these at all but am monitored through blood tests every so often. They are usually given along with blood pressure pills. I would suggest your friend sees a doctor to make sure it's safe. In fact, my pills are only refilled through the doctor's prescription. | | | | | | |

| | I wouldn't recommend buying over the counter drugs such as a water pill at all. Just my thoughts but what do I know! | | | |

| | Your friend should check with a doctor before she starts anything like that as all medication must be filtered by the body to do any good. This means extra work for the Liver and in the case of diuretics the Kidneys are also brought into play. I am diabetic and I have a water retention problem which is controlled with the use of diuretics. The indication that I have when I retain water is swelling in my feet and legs. But tell her that she should see her doctor before she starts any medicines or supplements. Remember even the large companies like GNC, Amway, or Weight watchers, are there to make a profit and they are not doctors so they have no way of knowing if the vit or min supplyment they are selling you will work with what meds you are taking. | | | | | | |

| | She needs to see a doctor. If she is retaining water it could be due to a serious condition. You don't retain water for no reason and if she takes a diuretic medication without knowing why, she could cause more harm. I'm thinking kidney failure... if her kidneys have slowed down, a diuretic could mean a death sentence, stressing them to the point of failure. There are other situations that could be serious, too. Tell her she needs to see a doctor. | | | | | | |

| | I am on diuretics but only through a doctor and for medical reasons. When I was younger , I tended to want to take them for PMS in a pill for the cramps. At that time it did help me but it was not something I did for weight management. If she gets her potassium of from taking them, it can really upset everything in her body! | | | |

| | I am not surprised that your friend is blamin water retention on her weight problem. As a personal trainer I would say over half the people say the same thing to me after their weight in. "OH, I retain water!" And?? I wondor to myself ok so thats about one or two pounds what about the other 30 pounds? But i do not say it. They are not a smart thimg to do. It could lower her blood pressure too much and also cause a potasium defeciency. If anything drink MORE water and take a good Vitamin B complex along with a good multi. | | | | | | |
