I do. I like to have it when I cannot hear clear sometimes whatever if it is my native language or just the language I know. I remember it was a good way to learn English when I was little, watching cartoon movies with English subtitles butkinda annoying for somebody that went to watch with me because I asked a lot aoubt what it meant, what that meant.

How about you?

I have to see that I do not like to watch a movie in another language and have to read the subtitles to understand what is being said. I was born and raised in the US and speak only English. I enjoy movies that are English. I find if I have to read the screne to understand what is going on I miss something. Maybe it is because while I am reading the action on the screne is still going on instead of waiting for me to get done reading.

There are times when closed captions are needed. These are the words that come up on the screne for the hearing impaired. My husband's hearing is very bad and he wears two hearing aids and still has problems. Thanks to the closed captions he can watch a movie without turning it way up so that it kills my ear drums. I have gotten used to the closed caption and can just over look the words. However, I have to admitt that I do read the captions on occation when the characters are talking real low or mumble.

There are some people who like foriegn films with the subtitles. I guess these people are fast reader and maybe that is why they like watching a movie this way. There are all sorts of ways to watch movies and television these days.

Thanks for responding! I feel a little difficult if I watch a movie that I don't understand and only read the subtitle too.

Subtitles are helpful specially if the audio isnt clear. Sometimes they pronounce words in a different way and I just read the subtitle to understand them.

I agree with you on that one.

That's why I like to have subtitle because English speakers have different accent.

I do like to watch movies with sub tittles if the sound quality is bad and hard to understand. I have seen some boot leg movies with bad sound quality. Don't really care to watch'em, mess with my eyes too much.
I also do watch imported movies that are yet to be dubbed in english. The only time I get annoyed is when the characters are talking super fast and the sub tittles are long but only stay on the screen for a few moments. And then there's when the visual quality is so bad, the sub tittles so small, that it's hard to read'em.

Yea, when they speak fast, I need to look at the subtitles, catch up quick. Thanks for responding!

I prefer to have subtitles when
watching movies because I can understand
better what the movie is all about. And
also if I don't understand the language.

Hi there!happy

I watch movies with the subtitles turned off. I get distracted seeing the dialogue flashing below the screen. Sometimes I find myself just reading and rather than watching. I usually miss all the action because I just kept on reading.

If there are dialogues that I didn't understand or not very clear to me, that's the time I turn the subtitles on. I just rewind the movie to the scene that wasn't so clear and turn on the subtitle. After reading then I turn it off again.

Others may find it bothersome to turn on and off the subtitles while they watch movies with me, but I like to understand the story and sense of the movie and not just watch the action.

Ciao!wink

Yeah I do and it becomes a habit. Honestly I just glance to the subtitles if ever I never heard the audio clearly because I find it hard to concentrate if ever I will read the subtitles while watching whole throughout the movie. And mind you, sometimes the subtitle is different from what the audio is. lol

Hello mermaidivy,

I prefer to have subtitles too. Sometimes I just couldn't get the proper sentence and most of the times, I don't like to watch with high volume. I get used to read the subtitles while watching movies and sometimes I even read the subtitles in English for my own mother tongue language happy

Dear mermaidivy,

When I was young, I will read the Bahasa Malaysia subtitles
when watching English movies/programme on the television.
I was trained that way, so..whenever I watch any movie in
the cinemas I will listen to the conversations and at the
same time read the subtitles. Just like you wink

I learned my Mandarin from watching Chinese/ Mandarin shows
and understand by reading the subtitles.

Today we were watching the Mandarin News as we did not change
the channel after the Korean Drama on 8TV. We can only understand
the contents about 50% as we are not Mandarin speaking..
Suddenly my son was saying:~

How nice if the Mandarin News have sub-title then we can understand
better. At the same time we can learn Mandarin too:)

However, certain movies in our local cinemas especially
those Cantonese movies, one quarter of the screen is covered
by 3 languages of subtitles. It is really annoying. The subtitles
are English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin... blink
