Your religion is proved to be false email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion7 months ago

This discussion is intended for all religions.

Its a HYPOTHETICAL situation I will be describing and its not intended to offend or make fun of anyones religion or beliefs.

What would you feel like if your religion was proved to be false? What difference would it make to your life? Would your life have any meaning without your religion?

I don't have any religious beliefs whatsoever. I prefer to think we are all part of an experiment by aliens.

As I mentioned earlier this discussion is not meant to cause offence, I am interested in how peoples lives would change if there was no religion. I know alot of people will make responses like 'I know my religion isn't false so the situation will never arise'.

I realise how strong peoples faith can be but for the sake of the discussion could you put it aside and try to envisage how your life would be without your religion. Thanks

I think my life is not as good as this without my religion. I am a Catholic but I do not do most of the things that a normal Catholic would do. I do not go to church every Sunday. I do not memorize common prayers and I do not take every religious lesson seriously. I just act as an ordinary person. When I need spiritual uplifting I just pray sincerely. I believe that there is someone up there responsible for everything that happens with our life. There are many lessons from the church. There are many religions and many beliefs. I respect them all as long as they do not kill people. I hate cult that kills innocent people. Literally kills. I do not care what others believe in and whatever they say about me. For me religion is not a name. If it does not exist I do not care. I care about humanity and attitude. I care about the way people treat each other and how good they are. I care about respect and equal treatment. What matters to me is that you have your own relationship with God. I hate people who are always bragging about their religions and what they believe in and convince you to join them. I just want them shut them mouth. Again I do not care whatever you believe in as long as you will not reiterate it over and over again. I have a strong faith on my own and no one could remove that. If Catholic is a false religion then that does not matter to me. That is just a name, a tag, a religion. But my own belief will remain. Maybe if there is no religion when I was born then I won't be like this. But I know for a fact that I will still be a good person as long as there are good people around me and as long as my great grandparents who raised me taught me good things.

I like your opinion on this. You obviously have a strong faith but it isn't defined by the label of being a Catholic. I find that people with your sort of attitude show their faith in actions rather than just words. You don't appear to be blindly following a religion for the sake of it. Your core beliefs would remain the same if the actual religion was removed. Thanks for your reply.

Well that's what I always think about atheist, if it was me I would have probably either jumped of a building or go into depression for life or become so restless that I wouldn't sleep!
Because the only thing that keeps me calm and hopeful is the fact that even after I die I won't just become nothingness but that I will have the real life after this test is over where I'll live forever.
I don't want people thinking that we think of these desires and goals first and then we conjure up the religion to fulfill them because I'm a Muslim and I've more than enough proof in the Quran to know what is right and what is conjured up.

I'm not religious but I am spiritual and my personal path does consist of parts of various religions...That said, if at any time the religions etc that my path is based on turned out to not be real or true etc it wouldnt ahve any effect on me...I would continue to live, belief, behave etc as I do now..Why? because its whats right for me and my life. Its helped me conquer personal demons, be more compassionate, accepting and loving...Its helped me grow as not only a person but also as a mother, wife, friend and so on....

Flip of the coin, if it were to be PROVEN that the Christian God was real and the bible etc etc I still wouldnt change my beliefs or ways...I mean why would I? Whats worked in my life has worked in my life and I would have no reason to turn my back on the things that have been nothing but positive..that would IMO be foolish really

I'm glad that people like you commented on this discussion. You don't follow a conventional religion yet you share the same type of views as Yori88 who is Catholic. His beliefs also seem to come more from within rather than the external teachings of an actual religion.

myLot reputation of 86/100. Ravenladyj (17903)   ranked 123 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

His beliefs also seem to come more from within rather than the external teachings of an actual religion.

which IMO is how it should be...the teachings of any religion IMO should only be a mild guideline for back of a better way to word it...being a religious or spiritual person should ALWAYS come from ones soul ya know..

Well, there is a theory like your statement,I am well aware of.That, the aliens have selected us for some experiments and soon after they reach a conclusion, the world will be destructed. But I don't know the reality and don't have any proofs to support this.Yet,I like to say, this theory is there like any religious beliefs.Cheers!

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

I don't think that the world will be destroyed personally. I think more along the lines that they are trying to get humanity to evolve so we can move to a new level. I think that we are all here to learn something. When we die some of us will have whatever it is that will enable us to go to the next level. Some won't and I think that in some form they return to try again. I think maybe this is what some people feel when they say they have been here before as someone else. I'm not that interested in what happens when I die. I would like it to be far in the future as it can be fun to be alive.

This is not the response you are looking for, but a question. Sorry. In your world what do the aliens that are experimenting with us look like. I am a very visual person and I think I need that.

Since religion can not be proved or there would only be one - we are kind of living the same way you are. Believing that something is real and accurate with no way to prove it.

Nothing would change.

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

I haven't got the first clue what they would look like if they do exist. I don't have a religious belief but if I did I would be an Alienist. I doubt very much that wars and bloodshed could be caused by Alienists. If I had another choice I would be a tree worshipper or something like that. Religion does seem to cause alot of conflict.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Trensue (1180)   ranked 1,759 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

You are right - I believe more wars are caused in the name of religion than any other. My question about the Aliens was not meant to be rude. If it was true belief I wondered if you had a visual in mind. I didn't mean to sound rude if it came across that way - sorry.

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

Its ok it didn't come across as rude in any way. Its not a belief as such it is just how I think the world may have been created. I find it a more plausible explanation than any others.

There is a difference between being a religious person and being a spiritual person. Ideally, a religious person should evolve into a spiritual person. When spirituality blossoms rightly, religious barriers do not matter too much.

In my religion Hinduism, there are innumerable sects, sub-sects, different God forms for worship, different philosophies and naturally there are and there will be lots of conflicts in perceptions. Religion as practiced at mass level and as expounded at the exalted level have a vast difference in between.

If at all I get a feeling that "my religion is proved false", it could be my particular sect or sub-sect and the the philosophies/ God forms/ religious practices followed at mass level apparently appearing "false" to me. This sense of falsehood can happen because I am not mature enough to grasp the true substance behind the external observances; because I get disillusioned by the priests or "low level Gurus" who do not practice or are ignorant of what they preach; because I never bothered to look into the core of the religious teachings behind the multitude of sects; because I have not seriously tried to study what great religious masters in Hinduism have expounded about "the unity behind diversity" in my religion.

So, if I am truly spiritual (and not just religious), then, when I get disillusioned, I will really look for answers to my lingering questions and doubts which could truly satisfy me within my religion at a different school of philosophy or practice.

Hinduism allows me this freedom of choice. I am not really duty-bound to stick to the religious precepts and practices of my sect or sub-sect where I have been born. I can look for alternative paths and guidance.

Hinduism says "go and surrender to a Satguru (a Guru of highest order, who knows the highest truth by the strength of his own experience) and seek guidance". A satguru will be such an evolved soul that he can grasp as to what sort of religious practice is best suited for my temperament and will guide me suitably in that path.

Thus, I will seek appropriate guidance from within my religion itself.

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

Thanks for your reply. You appear to be another person whos beliefs come more from inside yourself. I think you make a good point about the difference between religion and spirituality. You don't need any conventional religion to be spiritual but also you are a Hindu and spiritual aswell. You share the same type of views as other people in this discussion and yet you aren't from the same religion. Maybe it is because you are all spiritual people following slightly different paths to the same destination.

hi mike. very interestingly enough you've steered clear of your discussion going controversial so far!

Like you i am not religious.. however your idea seems more plausible to me then any religion.. my mom has the same theory.. after all.. if you look at the planet as a whole.. one of these things just doesn't belong.... we are the only thing on this planet that doesn't make a whole lotta sense.. that and.. the pyramids thing in egypt, and the other giant structures that seems impossible for man to have made with none of the machinery we have today..

My friend recently said (he is religious, somedays, and others he's not*shrug*) he thinks that all the miracles they talk about in the bible, like "with a giant glow he levitated into the air" (i dunno direct quotes) he thinks the people just didn't have the right words to discribe what exactly they were seeing but think it was alien ships and aliens.. i have no idea what to think.. but i try not to think about it too much.. after all it matters little what we believed after we die if all of it is false, and it matters not after you die if religion was true and you didnt' believe cause there's nothing you can do about it after your dead!

To answer your question.. My life wouldnt change any.. i still live my life and believe in myself instead of a false, or possibly false hope. after all.. praying mmay seem to help some, but doing has always helped me!

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

I've had tact and diplomacy lessons. It also helps that the responses so far have been really good. It's when you get any religious fundamentalists responding that things can get a bit heated.

I expect you mum has read the charriots of the gods book. I completely agree with the points you make. There is no way that some of the things in Egypt were built in the position they are without being viewed from a very long way above the ground. I do have certain views about what happens when we die but I'm in no hurry to find out if they are true!! Like you say, when your dead your dead. Anything afterwards is a bonus.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5734)   ranked 1,207 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

I doubt my mom has read anything like that, but she just came up with that all on her own.. the large man made structure thing was me.. I dont think she has any idea why she thinks that, she just knows she does. lol.

So do you have any theories on what exactly they are experimenting on us with? is it swine flu? is it.. maybe they want to reconstruct a similar lifeform to themselves to see how they came to be, how they evolved? Will they save us? or will they destroy us like the big book says? and how far from now do you think they will be done with us?

myLot reputation of 75/100. mike1976 (1104)   ranked 48 out of 9,666 in religion  7 months ago

She might be interested in reading the book if she is a reader. It puts forward various theories about how things in Egypt and other places were constructed.

I don't really have any idea what sort of experiments they may be doing but I don't think it is with any evil intent. I don'tthink that they plan todestroy us or anything. I don't think that they are actively doing anything now. I believe that they made the world and started the evolutionary process and now they just observe us.

I'm not saying anything that will cause controversy!! Satan can't misguide me because I've got SatNav in my car and GPS on my phone. I haven't seen hell listed on the destinations but I do have the Ozzy Osbourne voice on it 'Take the next left and your in f@ck&ng hell'!!!!

My life would go the same and it would not affect the way I lived. But it would surely affect how others interact with me. being in a so called secular country where political parties take religion as their base, this would affect a lot of people around me which would affect me in some way or the other.
