Do you still count on your fingers? email this discussion to a friend?

I think I do sometimes, but I remember in school particular teachers would tell you off for it, so I got used to doing it in secret, or maybe just very lightly tapping my leg or something unnoticeable. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing to use your fingers, everyone is different. I tend to learn better if I do things visually so it is just best for me!

It's far better to count on fingers than use a calculator! Calculators and computers make us lazy and we don't think for ourselves as much because we use technology to do it for us, so if you count on your fingers or in your head you are exercising the use of your brain and making you more alert and on the ball rather than relying on calculating machines which I don't like, if someone asks me a sum I will do it in my head or use paper, I won't use a calculator. It's whatever works best for you, if you prefer to use your fingers, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that!

Yes certainly counting on fingers is one way, though not all days I am, and people like me are at their very best.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

Yes I agree with you about using technology and it making you lazy. Since I left school if I ever want to work out my wages I will use pen and paper as I have a lot to work out, but I will also check it on a calculator, mainly to know if I am still able to do maths on my own. I worry that by the time I may have children I won't remember enough to help them with their homework, so it's best to practice.

Well I learned the maths times tables or most of them anyway to be able to count in my mind what the answers are. Though as my brain is slowing down a little, I use the Microsoft excel program and also my own calculator to do things that I would sometimes be lost in knowing the answer.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

Yes I use the calculator if I need to, or just to make sure I do get it right, I learned my times table with a very scary teacher so I'm not too bad at it I suppose. I was too scared not to learn it well!

No, that's something I rarely do and I believe that I've outgrown that. It was something I did when I was a lot smaller... And I don't think that there's something wrong with either.

Now I use my brain to calculate things. Easy calculations like 2+2, 8+1, 13+4 etc, is since a long time ago carved into my brain/memory. It would for sure take me some time to forget the answer to those.:P

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I think I can do most of it in my head, but with simple addition, I tend to lose my count if I don't feel it so maybe sometimes I will wiggly my fingers, or even just make a mark on the paper to symbolise 5 or 10 or something.

myLot reputation of 89/100. stardustkp (107)   ranked 6,583 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

Hehe. It's good that our hands and fingers can be useful in other ways than just grip, hold and carry stuff. (;

Yes, I think I still count on my fingers sometimes. I remember teachers getting on to me for it as well. I still did it in secret but sometimes I got caught, lol lol. I don't think it's a bad thing, either. I remember before there was any such thing as a cash register that would figure the change for you, cashiers would count on their fingers in secret. I never did see it, myself, but I remember kids at school talking about it. Kathy.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I am a cashier at the moment, I don't think I would even apply for the job if I had to work it out myself. Saying that though, sometimes I test myself on what the correct change is, and I get it straight away, but if the customer asks me a query on the change then I get completely muddled, atleast until the customer leaves. And then it is another customer thinking I am dumb..

Yeah sometimes I do that LoL
Especially when I'm in a hurry.
When I was in HS I was so good in mental solving(basic arithmetic) but now I'm in college I can't practice it anymore because we (BSECE students) depends on calculator.
We need to know each function of the calcu we're using(we needed that)

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

Calculators are a lot more complicated these days, they do things that you really can't do in your head, but it makes people rely on them more, you can do any maths with pen and paper, but I think you forget things as you grow up.

I remember being told not to count on our fingers too when I was in school. I still do it. It's easier to keep my place if I can count on my fingers. I still do it when I'm taking tests or something and I have to count what I'm doing. However, I do it under the desk or something so no one sees me do it, haha.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I think we all do it in secret at some point! I'd have used my toes if I could have.

I used to count with my fingers or compute using my fingers during my elementary days. When I reached high school, I compute using my mind. I was able to memorize the multiplication table from 1 x 1 up to 10 x 10. Up until now, I still have that memory so if ever I would add, deduct, divide and multiply for as long as it does not exceed up to 10 x 10 then i can answer right away from my mind. For bigger numbers, I use a paper and compute. But this few years that I already have a cellular phone with calculator, I just used the calculator. happy

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I would much prefer to do as much of it in my head, or atleast down on paper before I use a calculator. However, I would always use a calculator to do a final check on my answer, so I atleast know if I am doing my maths correctly.

Yes, I still do. I do not carry a calculator around and using the cellphone for big figures would be another option. But when neither is around, I use the most reliable calculator---the fingers. They never fail me.LOL. I used that since Kindergarten and it's still good now.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I do sometimes, but only to keep my count as if I count in my head I might start thinking of something random and then lose track. I use the calculator on my phone sometimes too, especially if I am shopping and need to keep track on what I am spending.

Before I did, that was even in high school. But now I learned to calculate in my head through numbers (little like a calculator) I'm an artistic person and I think through pictures so what I did was think I am seeing a calculator and remember certain numeral patterns in adding and subtracting (I can't do it in diving and multiplying) like if you remove 30 from a 100 you get 70. or 29 you get 71 like that. So when I figured that out I stopped using my fingers. I can do this with ease just as long as no one is talking to me. If they are my concentration will be off and I will get angry hahah.

When I was smaller I even imagined counting my toes when my fingers were not enough. LOL

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

Yes I think I tried using my toes too! I am more of an artistic person and I find I need to see things to understand it, or to memorize it, I wish I had learned your technique of picturing the calculator, maybe that would have helped me.

noo, i dont count my fingers now.Sometimes i use calculator. But most of the time i use my brain for it, i keep thinking and thinking until i get the answer i want.Honestly, i dont use fingers because it makes me like kid or something. If i can't get something in my head i will write it on desk or papper.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1036)   ranked 1,207 out of 34,875 in people  7 months ago

I don't think there is much wrong with you using your fingers, it was just teachers would tell you it is not the way to count. I think it is okay just to keep you remember where you are up to, but I try to use paper and pen too.
