2. Ldyjarhead (5167) | 9 months ago | Whoa, my friend.
Your first paragraph says that you will earn by posting private messages. There is NOTHING in myLot that says you will earn that way! You earn by discussing, and you will not LOSE earnings by posting in PMs rather than a discussion, but you do not earn by sending a private message!
| |
| |
Ldyjarhead (5167) | 9 months ago | I did read what you said, very carefully, more than once.
It still sounds like you are telling people they will earn MONEY by sending PMs. That is NOT TRUE, and you are misleading people with that statement.
| |
mysdianait (12366) | 9 months ago | Can you see the word 'money' in that phrase.
It is logical that if you do not lose it you are earning it, maybe not directly but I did not say that you are paid to send them at all.
| |
Ldyjarhead (5167) | 9 months ago | Oh give me a break. Do you really think that people that don't know what they're doing here are going to understand that? You said the word EARN. To most people out there, that means MONEY.
When you are on a site to make money, not losing money is most definitely NOT the same as earning.
When you buy something on sale at the store, you are saving money. Does the store advertise that you will earn money by shopping there?

sulynsi (235) | 9 months ago | Actually, I was searching around myself, to find that one. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention. Its just that because it was highlighted, I thought "gee, I must have missed THAT memo" and off I went to see for myself.
Now I really need the smiley - the one with the red cheeks?!
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | Jarhead, I understand what Diana means. Sure, MyLot doesn't reward us for PMs BUT that is the proper way to communicate about referrals &c, so the earning potential is there, rather than in posting discussions which will get deleted.
| |
x0xpinkyx0x (401) | 9 months ago | Just putting my 2 cents in, at first when I read it, it did seem like you're talking about earning money by pm, but after I finished reading, it was just saying that you will not earn by posting stuff that will get deleted, so it's better to ask someone by pm.
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | More or less, exactly, Pinky. The point is that there are many ways in which one can use MyLot to advertise - and therefore earn. They DON'T include posting blatant requests to join this or that program as your referral: you do have to be a little more subtle!
| |
SomeCowgirl (8479) | 9 months ago | I think the part that can be translated either/ or is when Mysdianait said "your discussion will be deleted and no-one will earn anything!." Those who understand the english language proficiently understand that by "earning" she means earning either knowledge so you don't get discussions deleted, or earning by money. I can see where everyone's coming from here and we all have some good points. One thing we've got to remember though is that wording things where people who are still learning English can understand what's being said is the best way to go.
No reason for any of us to get steamed over this, and bringing the wording up, and then explaining it as Mysdianait did, will hopefully help others who didn't get at first, understand, and that goes for english and non english speakers alike!

jazzsue58 (1088) | 8 months ago | I wish MyLot gave out a few cents to people whose profiles get checked out. Kisses from Bali made me feel so envious I just had to read more! I'm dubious as to whether this discussion will hit where it's needed most, though.
The scammers and referralists (yeah, I've had 2 of those PMs too) won't bother searching for a thread like this, any more than they will read the FAQs. Neither does MyLot have time to delete all the repeated posts about making money on MyLot.
Much simpler would be a big ban on any interest headings mentioning the word 'money' - after all, MyLot are pretty final about how this ISN'T just a money making site, but a place to earn a few dollars WHILST having fun chatting.
Where's the fun in reading 'I made xxxx today u can 2'?
Before people scream 'Shame shame' at me, I suggest they check out some of the profiles of the NeoBux and Cashcrate crowd. They have their own blogs and forums - go there for advice on how to make money by ptc-ing, is my advice.

3. Beertjie (726) | 9 months ago | This is a very good post because I see alot of the same questions being asked over and over again. These questions are mostly answered in the FAQ's. I also read a lot about people asking why their post was deleted or their earnings decreased, hopefully all will read this post and get to know the rules, and lose less money.
May you be blessed for your kind post. Blessings

5. TLChimes (1688) | 9 months ago | Had a bunch of discussions on such things while I was in my sick bed, did ya'?
Good advice, though. I think you about summed it up. Avoidable stuff is well... avoidable if people use knowledge or creativity.
Only thing I can add is that you can talk about a general topic that someone else did a year ago if you do it in an original, self written and directed way.
Like today I may post a topic about kick tush migraines that leave people knocked out. I'm 99% sure it's come up before but if I use my own experience and ask in my own fashion what I'd like to know from the people that stop by.
It's all a matter of trying to earn through a back and fourth discussion instead of a number count.

8. owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | Nice clarification, Diana! The only thing I would take a little issue with is your definition of Guidelines.
I agree that ALL of the specific 'DON'T's are, effectively, rules. They are, however, called Guidelines for a very good reason: Rules are usually fixed things - 'Thou shalt not [do something specific]' - whereas Guidelines are meant to specify the kind of thing you should and should not do. This is very important when it comes to the interpretation of the word 'link', for example, in the Guidelines.
Both you and I agree that a 'link' is really much more than a hyperlink: any direction for someone to go elsewhere for information is a 'link'.
The essence of the Guidelines (and the reason for calling them Guidelines rather than Rules) is that they list a number of things that don't go to make good discussions but what is listed are not specific Rules (and there are always loopholes to be found in a list of Rules) but examples of the kind of thing that doesn't make a good discussion.
If you want a positive 'rule' that defines what a good discussion is, try this:
"A good discussion is begun with a topic which actively encourages others to post descriptive and relevant responses beneath it. It may be just a statement of opinion but it should, in some way, invite others to post their ideas, solutions and opinions in a descriptive and relevant way. Just a list of other people's opinions as responses is really only 2/3rds of a discussion. Both the discussion 'owner' and interested others should feel it incumbent upon them to post comments (which also should be descriptive) under other people's responses."
Once you accept that as a definition of what a 'quality' discussion is, it is quite easy to see why all the 'DON'T's are just examples of what is not a good discussion and are not exclusive.
Creating good - indeed, cracking, top-notch - discussions is a skill that has to be acquired, of course, and most of us don't come to MyLot with that skill. Many people, though, would understand what a good discussion is, even if they don't aspire to be able to write one themselves. There is room for everyone, of course, and it does no harm to appreciate and try for the best. Even if you (not you personally, Diana ... I mean anyone else reading this) haven't yet learnt the art of good discussion, it is easy to begin by understanding the criteria and giving a '+' to anything you think is a particularly good example, even if you don't feel you can respond to it. This way, good discussions should tend to rise to the top in certain of the categories - Today's Top, Hot and so on.
Yes, many of the Guidelines are Rules but a lot of them are just 'examples'. If you haven't read the Guidelines properly and post something that violates them by mistake, then that is somewhat forgivable. The real cheaters are those who have read the Guidelines and try to find ways of 'getting round them' as if they were genuine 'rules' ... when challenged, such people will strenuously deny that they were 'advertising': ... "I was just giving information" ... "I didn't post a link!" ... "You are just a killjoy!" ... "Your response was not relevant, and it says in the Guidelines ..." are very common retorts from such cheaters.
| |
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | "The problem with the Guidelines here is that so many users 'twist' them. "
That is because so many see them as 'rules' and open to 'interpretation' - in their favour. The negative ones, especially, are just examples and need to be seen in that context.
| |
Aliceinwebland (5242) | 9 months ago | I have on a couple of occassions knowingly responded to a discussion which violates the rules only to point them in the right direction. Even if it means losing a few cents.
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | Several of us do that, Alice. Mostly it is done in the spirit of information, occasionally my exasperation shows (especially if the person has a user rating of 200 or more).
Responses vary from "Please forgive me, I won't do it again!" (What, I think, is there to forgive?) to the kind of response I posted above.
If it's obviously ignorance, I will post a short notice (as well as reporting the discussion); if it's blatant ignore-ance, I may not post anything - just report (and research their profile). I usually won't report more than three posts and my last report says something like "ALL posts seem to be like this!"

9. sulynsi (235) | 9 months ago | If they are not listed as "friends" though, how do you send a private message?
There are a number of individuals I would like to invite to be "friends", but feel, as a newbie, it may not be my place to invite them.
Some longtimers, have indicated by their posts an reluctance to accept new "friends", so we may be left out in the cold. One in particular, I wouldn't ask, because I feel it may be considered an invasion. For folks like that, you need to give them their space, and let them come to you, if they want, on their terms.
I am trying to build up credibility, (as well as smiley points (grin)), so hopefully, it won't be long before I am trusted.
Rules don't always cover all the bases, either. For example, surely I can't be expected to check all the responses and discussions for months or years back to avoid hitting a topic someone else has brought up?! I KNOW that can't be true.
| |
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | I know how you feel, too, sulynsi. There is no harm in inviting, though. When I get an invite, I always look at the person's profile to see what activity they have. If they look as though they are saying interesting things (and not just here for a game or to advertise), I will generally accept. If their profile shows nothing much yet, I sometimes refuse but only because I don't yet know enough about that person. I am always very happy to consider someone as a friend if they have already given evidence of the kind of person they are and, if they haven't ... well, there's always another day!
| |
sulynsi (235) | 9 months ago | Okay, I need to clarify this point.
Is this saying that I can't start a topic that's been covered in some fashion on myLot? That's gonna make the pickin's really thin!
Even if a topic has been discussed at some point, what about a personal angle, what about others who have only joined recently who never had the opportunity to join in the discussion? Or old timers who weren't paying attention the first time around?
| |
owlwings (5400) | 9 months ago | I think that if it's a good discussion, sulynsi, and hasn't been posted recently (especially if you can put a new spin on it), then there's no harm done. It's really the totally repetitive things like 'What is your favourite ice cream?', 'How much did you make in MyLot already?' &c &c that really shouldn't be here in the first place.
If you did a search and found that a similar disussion was posted two years ago, it might be time to present it again ... perhaps with your own take on it.
| |

sulynsi (235) | 9 months ago | ah, but you have to POST to get that list of items that are already up. And then you could get deleted for it?! Is there a way of forestalling that by actually being able to do your research before making the mistake?
| |
sulynsi (235) | 9 months ago | Thanks for the pointers, mys.
Not to beat a dead horse, but I looked up a topic I had been involved with last week. It was started within the week. It was very popular and had 34 responses. Good for myLot, I guess.
However, when I keyed the title of the topic, the EXACT same topic came up. It had been posted 3 months earlier. Quite a few of the same commenters were involved. One even made a very similar comment. 41 responses.
Both posters, based on the number by their names, are experienced myLotters.
Now, why was the second discussion not deleted? Because it was three months since the last time it came up? Or because it was so successful, both times? Did it have something to do with WHO wrote them? Did the number of previous postings by the proponents give the discussion immunity from deletion?
Not trying to be controversial here, but I think this situation clearly illustrates the point I've been trying to make.
