All terrain vehicles should be covered by the same laws as motorcycles.  email this discussion to a friend?

Maybe in your jurisdiction, they are regulated in a similar way, but where I live, they don't have to be licenced, they don't have to be insured, and they are not SUPPOSED to be on the roads. However, I see them DAILY on the highways.
And I'm not talking, diddling cautiously along the dirt of the shoulder. I'm talking full speed, down the middle of the road! Shirt flappin' in the breeze, thank you very much.

Now, why should they be able to do that without paying the same fees and licences we drivers have to pay? If that thing hit me, it would do some serious damage to my car. If it hit a pedestrian, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be feeling too well. Not to mention the condition the operator would be in, in either scenario. They can go as fast as a bike, they should be treated the same way.

ATVs are nifty little vehicles, lots of pep and very versatile. If they were properly regulated, those law abiding folks who wouldn't ride them on the roads now, could use them for business purposes, commuting, or whatever.

Wow, are they legally allowed on the road like that? Down here in Florida we not only have a bunch of ATVs, we also have golf carts which a lot of our senior citizens use to get around town. This is acceptable by our local police...as long as they stay off the main road running through town and don't try to cross our very large bridge going out of town. They are also allowed to drive on the sidewalks, which I don't believe is safe for pedestrians but so far there have been no problems. We also have to deal with those motorized chairs. I almost hit one when some old guy crossed the road right in front of me.

No they are NOT legal and that's what bugs me.
May be if they had to be registered and licenced, these violators would be easier to catch. Ha ha, you can't catch me

YIKES! seniors AND ATVs Its just a matter of time. I don't think I'll be travelling through Florida any time soon! lol

There are lots of places where golf carts are legal on the roads. I think when the price of gas was so high that's when that started. We vacationed in GA on the coast south of Savannah and every person in that area had a golf cart...some very fancy. We had one avaialable to us with the rental. We drove on the road by the river, a dirt road basiclaly - Shellman Bluff area. But on the weekends we noticed they all drive down the main drag - granted we are talking a two lane country road...but still I think that's crazy. You have little to zero protection in a golf cart. We own one that we drive around our property - we use it liek a JD Gator but it didn't cost so much! But on the road, no way....I'm not always comfortable in a bug suv worrying about an accident! Motorized chairs, they should stay on the sidewalk and cross at cross walks..same with bikes. Your life is in your hands why give that life to the decisons of another.

Here, they are not licensed or insured because they are not allowed on public roads...although I do see idiots running them down the roads at times.

However, if they are CAUGHT using them on the road, there is a pretty hefty fine involved, as well as having the ATV impounded.

I am going to be interested in what the sitution is elsewhere, because I don't think they are allowed on the public roads anywhere that I'm aware of.

I notice that all the folks that are riding down the highway on them are wearing helmets. Probably so they can't be identified. They can scoot off road away from any police pursuit. So the best way to identify them is a licence plate. Then they can be caught. Even if they are still not allowed on roads. Put an ID that can be seen from a distance.

I kind of think they should be allowed limited access to roads. If they are properly used, like all tools, they could provide a great service, especially with the cost of gas. And properly regulated. If they are going to use the roads, help pay for them like any other motor vehicle.

Sounds like it's the same the world over! I see them here on our roads too especially out in the countrsy and they seem as though they think they have a highway code all to themselves. They turn without any warning and when they are on a straight an narrow road they hog it all and you can't get past them.

We have other vehicles here too. You know those three-wheeled things you see in Italian films that look like somthing from before the World War? Well they are from extinct! Add to them all the electrical cars that don't need a licence either AND all those younger folks who use their skateboards on the roads too if it's slightly down hill. They have no brakes and at pedestrian crossings they dodge through those trying to cross w00t

I agree that all those who use the roads should pay. After all they are also using all the lines that are drawn there and are quite, if not even more, likely to cause accidents doh

thumbupI agree that both vehicles and motorcycles should have had the same kind of laws, but for me id rather have more strict laws on the motorcycles. the reason for that is there are more accidents in the motorcycle than any other vehiclesad and the main cause of that is the person is either sleepy or drunk. there are so many cases now than ever before since the popularity of motor cycle here in the Philippinesangry.
