Why Are Soul-Musicians Who Funk It Up Ashamed to Call the Music 'Funk'?  | |  On MTV-Soul yesterday, I was watching "Speak Your Soul." The songs I remember were: one with Brandy, Queen Latifah etc., about knowing when to get together with some guy, one with Beyonce, Beyonce-ing around and singing about giving some guy the 'green light'; and one with John Legend & Andre 3000, singing about waiting for the 'green light' from some girl at a party.
Excuse me? If that's "soul," it is right on the edge between 'soul' and "funk" (the Online Etymology Dictionary describes 'soul' music as something more like "popular gospel," becoming 'funk' by using "babe" in the lyrics where "Lord" had been).
So when did "songs about bodily passion" start qualifying as 'soul music'?
