Lawsuit filed against schools for not allowing children access to gay websites? |
|
This is a tough one. I don't judge for anyones sexual orientation or personal choices but at the same time..I'm not so sure I want my children to have access to gay websites without my supervision. There has been a lawsuit filed here against the schools because gay websites are filtered out. They want them to be allowed. I think I want this type of research to be done by my children at home and with me if it needs to be done. Maybe I'm being silly..please tell me if I am..all responses will be positivly rated as long as there is no abuse. I have posted a link of the story here..hopefully it will work..lol..I have issues with links. Please...honest opinions are all welcomed. ACLU sues Knox, Nashville schools for blocking gay websites

JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | Thank you for your detailed response. My children are also talked to very openly and know that I never judge anyone by their lifestlye, color, financial status,,etc. I am all for education and your right about it being a part of life. I agree that parents should be ultimately responsible for their child's access..I also think that a course line should be given to those who restrict so that they can study with their children at a personal level. If for nothing else than to feel at ease. Thanks again and take care.

mommyboo (3452) | 8 months ago | That is an excellent idea. I know that from enrolling my daughter in kindergarten, it is the first step of many that I will go through hand in hand with the school system. I plan to volunteer in her classroom and I'm not sure if she is going to stay at this school forever, I have the option of putting her in an arts school or something else down the road. It depends how satisfied I am with the curriculum and what she learns, not just what is covered but HOW she learns as well. It's funny that I came back to this discussion, last night my husband and I were talking about education and school and he was talking about how I may have to present opportunities and learning experiences myself for our daughter in the event her class is too big and there is never time for her to get attention from her teacher. She does great in preschool and she does most of her things on her own, but I don't think that's really fair as kids get older and they NEED at least a few minutes from a teacher to help them grasp something. We already use internet sites at home when she wants to look up something or find out about something, so when she encounters that at school, it'll be very familiar lol.
I do believe that you can ask the school for detailed information about the curriculum, specific units or things they are learning (if you want to add your own things outside the classroom), and the teachers and school do need to give you at least some information, they cannot keep you in the dark about what is being taught to your children while they are away from you. I do realize that from time to time I may run into situations where a teacher is biased and expresses that to the kids, but I think my daughter will figure out how that works and see the difference between how the teacher (or any adult) feels about a subject and how SHE ultimately feels about a subject.

JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | You and your husband are right about having to jump in and introduce certain things because of classroom size and teacher workload. I cannot tell you how many things me and my children have researched in reference to things taught in class because there wasn't enough time for teachers to address each child. The ones that don't have that "at home" help are often left behind in their studies and often time move aheadeven though they don't understand all that they need to. You would be surprised at things discussed without a parents knowledge. A year ago..my daughter came home with questions about abortion. The teacher held an open discussion with the children in her class and was none to eager to voice her own opinions about the issue. I would have never known if my daughter hadn't been "bothered" by the discussion and questioned me. It was a history class for the 8th grade.

3. muscles4me (9397) | 8 months ago | Leave it to the ACLU. I do not think any websites should be availabe to school computers. They should only be able to do there research for homework an should only be allowed one hour per day.
| |
| |
|
|
JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | Hi muscles! I have thought that internet use should be limited to the children that don't have access at home. When I hear website..I get nervous..lol..What happened to research in the library? At least that way they know what type of info that's in there. On the web..they could run across anything.
| |
|
|
muscles4me (9397) | 8 months ago | Yea I agree. Then if they find the website at home it is their parents responsibility. I think computers should be in family rooms and parents should stop by while their kids or doing their homework to make sure they are not playing around looking at garbage or playing games when they should be studying.

6. pergammano (2024) | 8 months ago | Jen..I do understand your discernation! I think I shud know, but don't remember the age of your children....but if it were my home, my choice would be that ALL internet time be supervised (easier for me, than you..as internet is not available in every home here)! I am NOT judging orientation (of an form) but I would sooner the kids (our blessed children) spent more time being children than on the internet growing up FAR TOO fast! Cheers!

pergammano (2024) | 8 months ago | After reading all the respective comments....I may be out of line, but I do not think the School is the place that we shud rely on for anything other than education meant to ferret a place in the world for our children! I truly feel that sometimes we rely FAR too much on our schools for education, that we as parents are responsible for!

7. lilybug (15467) | 8 months ago | I personally don't think that students should be surfing the net at school at all unless it is at an educational website. They are there to learn, not to surf the net.

|
mike1976 (1100) | 8 months ago | Apparently they are help and guidance websites.

JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | Hi lilybug! I think so too. I think the library allows students in after hours for research but I think it should be monitered and I would like it to be for those without computer access at home. It's not my world though..lol..Thanks for the response.

JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | I can't speak for everyone but I will tell you what it is for me. It has nothing to do with the sexual preference issue. My children are full aware of homosexuals..they are in a very diverse world and I want them to be good people with none judgmental attitudes. I have been very open with my family about everything. My issue is parents should make this call on restrictions. If it is an assignment..send it home so if our children have questions that are uncomfortable for them to ask someone else..they can ask us. Don't put them on a computer alone to figure it out. I don't do it at home and I don't want them to have such freedoms at school. Homosexual guidance..great for the homosexual. Send home a note and let their parents allow it. Homosexual guidance for a teenage girl that doesn't understand...confusing. Send a note home and let their parents explain. If they haven't already..even still...let parents be aware. I would feel that way about any site that discusses controversial views. Thanks for your response. I think that they could do very well in a structured environment too. Structured being the key.

revellanotvanella (1946) | 8 months ago | Your not taking into consideration that some kids do not have the SUPPORT from their parents, then where do they go?? I'm suprised the schools do not even allow the guidance counselors get involved in promoting awareness--PEOPLE, THESE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE, Whether you like it or not!
| |
|
|
JenInTN (3874) | 8 months ago | I do understand that these children sometimes have no place to go and I hate that. Everyone should feel love and acceptance and I am greatful that our future holds one that is open to lifestyles and people for who they are. Guidance counselors should definately open their doors for children that have nowhere to turn. I'm not saying my children should be shielded from life or people..just free access on the internet.

mike1976 (1100) | 8 months ago | I agree totally with supervising kids on the internet and I have experience of the dark side of the net. I have no children but my girlfriend has a 12 year old who I am very close to. She lives on the internet like I do. I know exactly what kids can stumble across if left unsupervised.
I tried to tell my girlfriend about the realities on the net but she said she didnt want to invade her daughters privacy and didnt want to monitor her. To cut a long story short I installed monitoring software on her laptop in secret.
I can't go into details but I was glad I did what I did even though some may see it as me invading her privacy.
I can't stress enough the importance of monitoring your children on the internet.
