Is it right to judge people by thier possessions? |
|
In today's society, we are taught to believe that if you appear a certain way, you are better than those who are less fortunate than you. For instance, purchasing a gucci bag would make you appear to be better than someone who purchased a $20.00 bag at your local Walmart. Another great example would be the make of car you own or how big your home is. There are many people in this world who don't have much but are extremely wonderful people and are almost immediately judged by the way they dress and live. People who are more fortunate than others seem to get more respect than those who have less and I truly feel it's not right. We are truly all the same and we're all going to end up in the same place....SIX FEET UNDER!.. What do you think: Is it right to judge people by their possessions?

We're bred to be just like animals, and we have so many social qualities that are seen throughout other societies. Of course we're going to look at someone and have a pre conceived notion of them in our minds before we say a word to them - its naturally. So I wouldn't complain about it - there isn't anything you can do about it and I'm sure there are a ton of moments in your life where you have done it yourself.
Also... you can flip that around and say people that have a lot are seen as snobby rude etc. whereas people who are more are given adjectives like kind, thoughtful, helpful, etc.
Things happen.

2. robert67 (1341) | 8 months ago | i used to feel superior if i had the latest designer clothes, i wouldn't buy clothing unless it had an expensive designer label.
now i'm older and i buy what looks good on me and what i feel good in, i dont care if it's a £150 armani shirt or a £19.99 shirt from a high street chain store, if it looks and feels good i will wear it.
i dont drive but if i did i would drive what i need to drive, not a status symbol.
i dont judge anyone but i do respect people who are happy, financially comfortable, confident with themselves and have good friends. you can't buy happiness and no flash car or designer label can attract real friends.

But I must admit sometime I too can not resist this material world and its hard for me not to be influence by it. The industry I m in ( I m a fashion designer) is also definitely not helping either. In some ways I feel that people with a "better" outter image appears to me that they are more put together and probably take the time to take of themselves better. There for, I justify my judgement about them. Hopfully I will see things in a better perspective with age and become less judgemental.

Even if they don't..it's a horrible waste to judge them on their belongings. There are some really great people that have a little house and not so trendy stuff.

A celebrity is given a high profile instead of a beggar. I am a strong believer that we should treat everyone equally.

| 8. stahir45 (78) | 8 months ago | HiGlow! You are perfectly right in your stance. All of us will meet the same fate "SIX FEET UNDER!", asa you have described. I have a solution but perhaps it may not work because people will not be willing to act upon that. It is we poor people who give exposure to and glamorize the pump and show of rich people when we interact. If we have a carefree attitude towards them, we don't pursuse the lifestyle of rich people and don't try to compete with them, I am sure much of this evil will reduce. We shouldn't care if somebody who looks down upon for us wearing a dress or shoes, or bages not conforming to the style or fashion. But it is hoping against hope and let's hope that it may happen some day.

9. ProudMommy22 (572) | 8 months ago | I agree with you. Its not right to judge anyone by the way the live or what they wear. But its a big thing now an days where you have to pay double for clothes just so your children dont get picked on at school or just so they can make a few friends. Its sad in my opinion that these adults whom teach there child that they are better than someone because or a certain reason. We are all the same in some ways just people thik differently than others.

10. celticeagle (4820) | 8 months ago | Oh yes. The statis symbols. And ya can't take it with ya mentality. Sadly life is full of people who are trying to keep up with the Jones' and are heavenly indebt in the attempt. It is a waste. Whatever happened to just being comfortable with who you are and how nice the neighbors were instead of this keeping up thing? It said that people have become so shallow. We are all the same. Some have more plastic than others. We shouldn't be judged by the brand names we posess and what we spend on a home or car or anything. It is very sad.
