Why I Use Wordpress Blogs on My Own Hositng Accounts |
|
I just read a discussion that brought back a memory that involved having my blogs shut down by blogger.com because someone complained about something. They didn't eve check my site they just shut it down and I had make a request to have it reactivated after a human checked it.
That was the last day I used free blogging accounts. It's my living they are playing with and they don't give a crap about you or they would check to see if the complaint was legit, right?
Now I host my own domains over 3 different hosting accounts and 8 IP addresses.
I don't blog about anything that would ever get me shut down but that obviously doesn't matter does it.
I love Wordpress blogs and the many plugins that make my blogging for profit a lot easier and more search engine optimized.
Do you use Wordpress for your blogging platform and if so what plugins do you use. I don't mean Wordpress.org either, I mean you have your own domains hosted and use Wordpress as for you blogging.

1. diamania (1660) | 7 months ago | If one worries about losing his/her blog then indeed hosting your own blog is a good solution.
Anyway I think you mean wordpress.COM instead wordpress.ORG. The .com offers free blog hosting and the .org one requires your own hosting.:)

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | Well I guess that just shows you how long it's been since I stopped using them.:) I never had a problem with Wordpress.com but stopped using them as well. I wasn't taking any chances with my income again.
thanks for correcting me.
I never worried about losing a blog before Blogger shut down my sites. I don't blog anything this is offensive, I don't swear, I don't put people down, no reason but it just took one person to complain about, well I never found that out, and they will shut you down without notice.

2. Canellita (3158) | 7 months ago | I decided to start with Blogger because it was free, simple and easy. I hope to not encounter any problem like the one you described because I would be terribly upset that all my work could disappear so easily and without any warning.
I looked into Wordpress but downloading was involved and it seemed more complicated than what I was ready to get into at the time.
When your blog was shut down were you at least given a reason?

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | On my hosting accounts I have Fantastico as part of the control panel. It allows me to install Wordpress in about 1 minute flat, no software to deal with at all.
I never enjoyed it when I had to download the software and install. It just intimidated me and I have been a computer instructor for more than 20 years, so I could imagine how non-techies feel.
| |
|
|
Canellita (3158) | 7 months ago | What is Fantastico? Is that something else to be downloaded?
| |
|
|
WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | Fantastico is an application in the Control Panel I have for my hosting accounts.
It is an awesome program or app that will let me setup so many platforms for content. I only use it to install Wordpress as it's the one I learned to use and love. There are so many other platforms for content management but I don't have time to learn any others right now.
I can log into my control panel from my website or blog and from there I can update the copy of Wordpress installed if there is an new available, right now I see I have a few blogs that are still version 2.3 and the latest release is 2.7.1 so I can just update with one click of my mouse.
I use to take about 15 minutes or more to install Wordpress manually but now I can do it from my hosting account in just one or two minutes.
You can do a search online for the 'fantastico help' and learn just how cool it is.

SunlightSwoon (661) | 7 months ago | @Canellita-WebMann's description covers it completely...you see when you find a company to host your blogs/websites on, part of what that company will make available to you is a control panel that allows you too do just about anything n everything imagineable to your blog/website.
And you gain that access to do these incredible things, from a control panel...one of the items on that control panel is called Fantastico and what this does is makes it possible for you to set up a wordpress blog. And it really isn't that hard to do ... and the only reason I am stating that is because I have 5 thumbs and I got through it [LOL]...8o)

Canellita (3158) | 7 months ago | So this is an application supplied by the hosting service for your website then?

3. zedlav23 (377) | 7 months ago | I have been blogging since november of last year. And yes, wordpress was my first choice. I chose to have my own domain and private hosting as it really looks more professional and personalized. I've heard a few stories about blogger.com blogs getting I like wordpress because you will never run out of plugins that will make your blogging much more easier. I don't really have any idea about programming so the plugins really comes in handy for a novice like me. I have a few plugins that i used the most like Adsense Manager, a comment plugin, and a linking plugin.

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | I do a little programming, just enough to add a few things to my header and sidebar, I can even put things above or below my posts but I still would be kinda lost if it wasn't for the great plugins.

4. SunlightSwoon (661) | 7 months ago | Like most newbies I started out with blogger, but when I learned that I could lose my site/sites 'in a heart beat'... I decided to switch. I'm still in that learning phase but I found a few plugins that I thought would work well on a few of my sites, and so far I haven't been disappointed.
I am using the following plugins: -MaxBlogPress Stripe Ad-this allows you to display a Text AD Stripe at the top of your site~ -SmartYouTube-I was having a huge problem including vids on my blog, this plugin eliminated the hassle~ -WordPress Automatic Update-the thought of updating wordpress was indeed intimidating, I haven't used this plugin yet but there are only 5 steps to follow and I think I am up to that challenge~ -Easy Contact-this gadget adds a simple contact form to your blog...just luv it...8o)

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | Gotta love plugins
I have a free tool I use to update my blogs right from my desktop without the need to open my browser and log into my accounts.
The tool is called BlogDesk and comes from BlogDesk.org and of course is a free download.
I just open up my copy of blogdesk, where I have all my blogs listed on the right hands side with all my categories.
I then just write my blog post, I can also download posts I have already published and modify them from BlogDesk and then just upload them again.
I can use images directly from my computer and when I upload my post it also sends the image along with it. It's just a tool that's just too cool.:0

It's going to be a great summer and I will have lots of content for my fishing and gardening blogs. Maybe even a few for my travel blog.
Have a great summer Zed

6. suspenseful (17020) | 7 months ago | I started with another blog, but someone stole my name and so I went with blogger. I have not put anything that could get me in trouble. I cannot afford to host my own blog, but Wordpress does sound interesting. I will have to look into it again as I am writing a novel and would not mind a blog to advertise it when it is finally published.

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | I wanted to buy a domain with my full name but it was already taken so I just bought a domain and added the ASK in front of my name so it says to ask me. I also buy domains that have the .ca for Canada so I can get domain names that are already taken in the .com world.
As for hosting, you can get a hosting account for about 5 bucks a month. I put Mylot earnings aside for that purpose.

7. scheng1 (1644) | 7 months ago | Oh dear, sounds horrible. I think blogger.com should at least give reason for shutting down a blog. It is very painful to build up a blog, and got shut down for no reason at all. Wordpress.org did shut down some blogs, at least they clarified the violation of TOS led to the shutting down.

8. re08dz (1099) | 7 months ago | Hi,
While I still have a couple of blogger blogs floating around the place, once I made the switch to wordpress I never looked back.
I have a couple of domains and different hosting accounts (along with many subdomains within those accounts). And pretty much each of them has a wordpress blog on it. I sometimes upload wordpress and sometimes use fantastico (the only problem I have with starting a blog via fantastico - and it's nothing major - is that it's harder to work out which blog is which if you need to go into the phpadmin:-) )
And of course not only is Wordpress better when it comes to search engines and in my opinion a whole lot easier to maintain - those plugins are just brilliant. I use many different ones but some standard ones that I have on every blog are
Askimet (naturally) Google sitemaps Another sitemap one that is for my readers to find things (can't think of the name) All in one seo rss footer And the smart ping one (again can't think of the name) means it only pings if it's a new entry and not if you are editing an old one etc.

WebMann (2768) | 7 months ago | That's what I like to hear, excellent. I find I use way too many plugins but that's only because I have install them all. They all do their jobs well so I am not really complaining. But I think the new theme I just bought this week is going to help me work with far less plugins.
I subscribed to Jack Humphrey's Friday Traffic Report, he is full of great information so I have him in my RSS feed reader Bloglines.
I have been going to his blogs for some time but just this week I came across a link to this new blog theme and started watching a couple of videos. I was excited about it immediately but thought I was likely one of those too good to be true products that wouldn't live up to the hype, but I was way off. It rocks.
The theme is 'the thesis theme' and I just blogged about it yesterday on the blog I have listed in my Profile page.
I won't bother saying any more here as I have already repeated some of what I wrote in my blog post. But you have to watch the videos on their site and I am sure you will be skeptical too.:)
BTW: I would like to know that name of the sitemap plugin that helps your readers find things. I find there are times I know I have a post with a phrase in it but can't find it from the search box in my blogs.

re08dz (1099) | 7 months ago | Hey,
The sitemap is by Dagon Design and it's like a table of contents for your blog - it sets it all up on a separate page. Pretty handy and the search engines like it too:-)
Just search dagon design and then go for wordpress plugins

9. ayameyokomi (418) | 6 months ago | Oh, I'm sorry to hear about that. Honestly, I didn't know Blogger was like that..
Yes, I also use Wordpress as my blogging tool because it's more powerful and advanced that those free blogging tools out there such as Blogger, Live Journal, and such. Wordpress is very good compared to Blogger, which can't create separate pages for those pages that needs pages. I know how to create pages with Blogger but I kinda didn't like it.. Then I decided to switch to Wordpress instead. At first I was really confused in using Wordpress but as time passed by, I got the hang of it.
I use many plugins. Such as Simple spoiler, Gravatar, Lightbox, Recent Posts and Comments, Most Commented Posts, Site Statistics, Wordpress Download Manager, and etcetera. I used to use a lot of Wordpress plugins but I realized that a blog or site would look much better and simpler without a lot of plugins so I deactivated some of the plugins I'm using.
So there, Happy myLotting!

10. kryzell (560) | 6 months ago | A few days ago, I made a discussion here about blogspot vs wordpress. I just am not sure of how to work out in each... or which is better since I am a newbie in blogging.
However, when I checked blogspot, I found out how convenient it is to sign up for someone new. I also signed up for wordpress, yet I have know idea how and where to start. Also, I love personalizing my template and I thought, that's something I can't do with wordpress. Or maybe I;'m worong, and just failed to check this feature?
