Many countries and areas of the world already have too many people. How can you tell when there are too many people - simple, when the country has to import more food than they export.
When the land can not support the number of people living there, there are too many people. Importing and exporting food will always occur since some foods grow better in one region or another and we all enjoy variety. If a country is exporting more food than they import and there is food for everyone in the country (even if they are poor and receive the food through a charity) that country is not over populated. But, when a country imports more food than it exports, the land is not able to support the number of people living on it.
Crowding people together in cities gives them housing; but, if the entire world becomes one big city there will be no food to feed all of those people.
Countries are not the only ones who encourage breeding. Religions are a major force in overpopulation. More people are likely to follow the dictates of their religion than a government that tells them to have more children. Religions tell people they should not use any form of birth control. Religions tell people they should "go forth and multiply". Religions tell people they should have multiple wives and father as many children as possible so they will be "blessed".
When farming was done by one family without heavy machinery, a large family meant more food and prosperity. When people were dying of natural causes before they were even 30 years old and infant mortality was high with few children surviving long enough to become adults; uncontrolled breeding made sense.
The world has changed, most children grow up to be adults now and the average life expectancy is longer. You end up with three or four generations all alive at the same time. Many people realize this is a problems and the ones who are not blinded by religion are changing their ways.

People are increasing and but I believe it will take such a very long time before the earth cannot sit additional person anymore.
The media says countries are too populated. Okay. But I don't fully believe. I live in the city right now and can see many people living in compact crowd of houses. But I observed every time I visit the province there are just too many spaces why people still live in crowded cities. As I travel to the province all I can see are mountains and, fields and a few number of scattered houses. The average between houses is about twenty meters. When I was a child I believed that my country is really overpopulated but I think it is not.
Overpopulation is blamed for poverty and they tried to reduce the number of people by family planning. But I see it doesn't solve poverty.
Wars and diseases are there which reduce world population so it is also possible that there'll come a time when there's no people left on earth. It is either nothing will be left or the earth will be full with people. But for me it is the third possibility: the second coming of Christ will happen before one of the two happens. :)

Well with us being able to live longer something is going to have to give. I believe the world is so crowded and that is part of the reason for so much crime in America. People live on top of each other and its just to much for some people to take. When you have people taking pills to give birth to more than one child at a time it just not a good thing.
