The Day Arrives


Monday
July 20th
6:14 A.M.



GOOOOOOOOOOOOD Mooooorning, Memphis. Its 6:14 A.M time to rise and shine and get ready for work, its Monday morning, oh yeah. Now I know everyone out there is just waking up but get this, some weird news coming over the airwaves this morning. Remember those strange homeless attacks in New York City last week? Well they are happening in other cities now, and now we have them here in Memphis. Yep that’s right you heard me right, an officer in midtown last night was apparently attacked by a homeless person, and bit, yep you heard me right, bit, and ended up being rushed to the hospital and dying. Now that’s weird, but apparently he wasn’t dead, because a couple of hours later his body was found to be missing. How the hell does that happ..


Tom groaned as he slapped the button to turn off the alarm. Not really listening to the radio at all, just more weird news. He sat up rubbing his eyes and shook his girlfriend, still snoring of course.

“Wake up Laura, time to get ready for work.” He said.
Laura groaned and opened her eyes. “Ugh I don’t want to go in today, how about we stay home today and have sex all day?”

Tom grinned “God I would love to, but hell we gotta pay the rent.”

“Yeah yeah damn rent and bills.” Replied Laura

Tom got up and stumbled into the bathroom, starting the shower getting in.


6:40 A.M.

Tom kissed Laura bye and walked out to his car, not noticing the sirens in the distance, after all its Memphis, there’s always sirens somewhere. As he started the engine he quickly slid a CD into the CD player before the radio had time to start playing at all. As he drove down the street he noticed some smoke in the distance but didn’t think much of it, probably a house fire somewhere he thought shrugging.
He merged onto I40 heading towards midtown. At the I240 and I40 interchange noticing that traffic was going a little slower then normal, as traffic ahead slowed to a stop he noticed a man off to his right stumbling in the grass slowly heading towards the freeway.

“Damn bums” Tom mumbled

Then traffic started moving again and completely forgot about the man, and didn’t notice ten more off in the distance stumbling towards the freeway, one in a policeman’s uniform, two in paramedics uniforms, and one wearing a suit all covered in blood.
The closer he got to midtown the more police cars he saw, and even a couple of military vehicles.

“Now that’s really odd, wonder why they are here” Tom switched off the CD and started listening to the radio.

“Heeey Memphis, remember those attacks I was talking about a while ago? Seems there have been more, no real details released but an ambulance was found abandoned with blood splashed everywhere inside, and on Levee road almost at North Watkins an abandoned car was found also with blood splashed inside. What the hell is going on? Police aren’t releasing any details yet, except to say something is going on but not sure yet. Gee ya think? Wow I didn’t know that. And ive gotten a few calls that the military are active here in Memphis and other parts of the country, the President isn’t saying anything, and nobody else is either, well I will keep you informed. Anyway let’s get back to the music for a little while.”
“What the fuuck?” Tom wondered.

As he pulled into his place of employment’s parking lot and rushed in twenty minutes late, he heard sirens and saw two police cars go rushing by.

Tom walked to his desk seeing his boss and started to apologize for being late but his boss just waved him on.

As he sat down Derrick came walking quickly over.

“Hey man what’s up? You see all the shiit going on out there? Shiit any clue what the hell is going on?”
“Hell if I knew don’t you think I would be telling you?” Said Tom

Derrick laughed “Fuuck yeah I hope so, I bet you can’t guess what David is saying”

Tom snorted “David, the zombie freak? Hell I can only imagine, it’s the end of the world, the zombie apocalypse is here, were all going to die blah blah blah.”

Derrick looked up towards the windows. “And speak of the devil and he appears.”
Tom looked the same way and saw a man with brown hair about six foot two, 200 or so pounds, mostly muscle coming over to them, looking back at the window.
“ This should be fun.” Whispered Tom

“Shiit man, shiit shiit, you see what’s going on out there? People are being attacked, and vanishing from the morgue, people are biting other people, and those people are dying and coming back as zombie’s man. I told you it was going to happen, and its not just happening here, its happing all over the country, hell all over the world, and the government and media are keeping it under wraps, they don’t want anyone to panic. Hell its time to panic man. Hell I’m only here to warn you guys that you should go home, and be with your families and plan for it, board up your houses, get weapons. What’s so damn funny?” David said to Tom and Derrick.
“Damn man, there’s no such thing as zombies its all fiction, you know made up, no matter what your zombie sites say.” Replied Tom
David looked at the two and they both could tell he was getting mad and then calmed down.
“Yeah when the shiit hits the fan we will all see who you come running to right?” David replied and then turned around and walked back towards his desk by the windows.
Derrick walked over to his desk and started working as did Tom.


12:06 P.M.

Tom was steadily working away on his computer glancing at the clock once in awhile eagerly looking forward to lunch in 24 minutes when the somewhat quiet of the office, besides the clicking of the keys on the keyboards and muted whispering once in awhile by a loud SHIIT, over by the windows, Tom looked up and groaned as he saw David standing up looking outside.
“Shiit shiit shiit shiit shiit, I told you guys I told you, come over here and check this out if you, didn’t believe me before you will now.” said David.
Tom sighed, got up with a few other people including the manager, looked over at Derrick who rolled his eyes and continued working until there were sounds of shots from outside then he stood up and quickly walked over to the windows too.
As Tom got closer he could hear David saying over and over “Shoot it in the head, damn it shoot it in the damn head, two to head damn it you’re a cop, you should know to do this.”
When he got to the window and looked out his jaw dropped. There was a cop and his partner both standing behind the doors of their car shooting at people coming towards them, but they weren’t going down. Then Tom got a better look at the people and gasped, and heard a little scream coming from one of the women. Two of the things that were closest to the cops had an arm missing, with broken off bone sticking out of the sockets, and both had blood covering their faces. Farther back fifteen more were slowly coming towards the cops.
Tom stood there staring in horror as the officers kept shooting at the things coming towards them.
“My god why aren’t they going down? What the hell are those?” yelled Derrick.
David looked at Derrick. “They are zombie’s man, how many times have I talked about them? How many times did I talk about the zombie apocalypse? How many times did I try and warn you?”
Suddenly a scream from outside diverted their attentions, the closest zombie was biting the farthest cop on the arm, and then the second zombie grabbed the cop bent down and bit into his neck and blood squirted out onto its face. The second officer yelled something and then quickly reached into the patrol car and got the shotgun out and started backing up towards the building putting his pistol in its holster.
Tom watched as most of the zombies continued towards the fallen officer but a few continued to head towards the other cop. Then his jaw dropped as the zombies heading towards the fallen cop stopped started swaying back and forth and then lurched into motion towards the front doors, he gasped in horror and shock when he saw the cop slowly lurch to its feet with half his face missing, one eyeball dangling on his cheek with blood coming out of the socket. Then he noticed one hand was missing just the end of the wrist with some meat and bones on the end.
“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god this isn’t possible, this cant happen, holy fuucking shiit, this cant be happening.” Tom started saying over and over again.
David grabbed Tom and started shaking him “Hey get a hold of yourself its happening, just like we zombie freaks said, come on I know you can handle this, come on, we need you now, I know your father was a Green Beret and taught you how to fight.”
Tom blinked looked outside and quickly away.
“Im going downstairs to help that officer, who’s with me?” asked David.
“Uh ill go, and I think Tom should go too.” Said Derrick
David looked around at the rest of their coworkers who all seemed to be in shock and crying or praying.
“Come on people need to get it together if you want to survive.” Said David
Nobody moved or said anything or looked up.
“Well we will need a distraction to get out of here.” Mumbled David
The three of them ran to the elevators with Tom stumbling along still in shock when they got downstairs the cop was pushing chairs and benches in front of the doors, when he heard the noise he whirled around bringing his pistol up. Seeing the three of them he lowered it.
