Homemade irrigation system for the garden email this discussion to a friend?

Sometimes saving money does meaning buying some start up supplies. The way I see if it cost over $20.00 the project but be able to return it's investment within 3 months for me to consider bothering with it.

Right now as a way to cut back on the cost of watering a garden I have taken on the task of creating a rain catcher system and irrigation system in one. I have a raised garden with wood barrier, so creating the system isn't that hard, I go get an old 30 gallon trash can we no longer use, poke a hole near the bottom put a spout on it and hook up some pvc pipe to it. Then from the pvc pipe connect some tubing and place it on the inside of the garden barrier poke holes in it aimed towards the plants. Connect two more rows of tubing to go on the inside to get the plants not on the edges and let the system stand as gravity feed right now. The cost $16.00 for the piping, tubing and connections.

I am looking into making a hand pulley system to help create pressure when watering the garden to pump the water through the pipe and tubing with more force behind it but that will have to wait. I may not need to if the gravity feed works but I suspect it won't be enough.

The other thing is the pipe connection can be taken off and placed on the hose in case I don't have any rain water and the garden needs to be watered. At least with the irrigation system in place I know it will be directed toward the garden only and it won't unnecessarily water the surrounding grass outside of the garden.

I've also put a good amount of peat moss down to help the garden retain moisture so it won't need watering as often. Does anyone else have any frugal gardening tips?

I have a sort of homemade irrigation sytem at home too, but I was just checking that I with have to put some work into it after having it for some years. It saves water but it also saves time. I know qhich parts I have to water by hand but it´s the least. Peat moss is a good ides to retain moisture. I have all my cacti with little ground quartz to retain moisture. Thay look beautiful and it helps

This is a great idea. I am looking into ways to live a much greener lifestyle and I just told my husband the other day that I would like to gather some rain water for things like plants, gardening, etc. I also think that we could use it to water the pets and animals that we have. I will tell him about this.

If you want to use this type of system to give your pets water you may want to try and put the water through a filter. The filter system should be easy to make if you want it to be gravity feed also. But you may need to find some way to make the filter itself or make a system that would fit a commercially made filter.

Love it!! My grandfather always had a rain barrel at his house. I know myself when I lived up North, I always had a compost pile. I lived where it was almost all clay soil which is so very hard to plant in. But when you mixed in that fabulous compost, it was like a miracle worker. We have to think out side the box these days. This was a fabulous idea. Kudos to you!! I will have to try it out. Living in florida now, it gets very hot when we are not in rainy season. Things dry out in minutes.:)

I am writing about re-using things and gardening. HomeMade drip irrigation can be a good and always successful idea. And you can re-use plastic bottles, milk jug etc.
