Do you think making mistake is good or bad?

Totally agree making mistakes is a real learning process, without mistakes we can't better ourselves

Agree, if only the bosses can see it this way.
Most employees want to play safe, so they rather follow the SOP, and do exactly, strictly in accordance to the procedures.
In this case, they don't learn, they dont make mistake, and they have a clean record in the company. But in the long run, it doesn't benefit the company and the employees.
I think the society places too much emphasize on perfection, and does not tolerate mistakes.

Hi Guitarpunk, I think we should take in the severity of the mistake. Just one email sent to the wrong person, or worse, click on the whole address book, instead of just one person, can spell the end of a promising career, and provide confidential information to the whole world.
Somehow, filing the papers into the wrong file a few times is not such a big deal, as compared to making million dollars loss for the company.

Hi Cbeee, agree with you that making the same mistake over and over is not a good sign.
Actually most people do not make the same mistake few times, probably with the exception of choosing the wrong person to marry. Somehow people don't learn when it comes to emotional matters.

Hi Anandjk, the sad thing is that many companies do not view mistake this way. When the mistake is severe enough, to provide a life lesson for the doer and the observers, the company will terminate the service, and not allow him to rectify the mistake. The new person taking over the job always have to clear the mess.
And sometimes those who never make mistakes (because they do nothing), are promoted to higher position.

Hi Nerissagoh, that's very true, boss can make mistake, and nobody dares to tell him, but once we make a small mistake, we get scolding. And the boss will never fail to remind us that we "always" make mistakes, and keeping a record of whatever we did wrong, never about the 99% times when we are correct.
Anyway, this kind of boss is really stupid. Nobody can build a multi-billion dollars company on his own.

Hi Mrbluey, I agree with you on mistakes make in personal life. When we misjudge a person, we learn from the mistake. So next time we learn to trust or not trust people, and more careful about our dealings with people.
But in working life, we cannot tell the boss that "these are smart mistakes, I will learn more from the mistakes".
Some people in civil service will bite your head off, if you use the wrong saluations (eg Miss, Ms, Mrs) in the email.

Hi Prinzcy, many people are so fearful of making mistake and jeopardizing their career prospect, they end up doing nothing much, just follow procedure, and not signing any documents that might jeopardize them.
Sometimes the environment is like that, especially those in civil service. They basically want to do everything politically correct, and not thinking of using mistakes to learn.

Well, there's limitation on making mistakes. Think carefully before that. Besides, no one want to commit mistake, it usually happen by accident. But if you already commit it, just brace it, not running away from it. We are afraid of making mistakes due to certain reason like hurting others or the consequences is too big too handle.

Hi Prinzcy, some working environments are such that, the less work you do, the less mistakes you make, and so you get promotion.
In a civil service position I ever hold, simple mistake like using the wrong saluations (eg Miss, Ms, Mrs, Mdm) are seen as the end of the world. I had a bad hour by the stupid supervisor who chose to keep record of all my emails and letters without the right saluations.
When I moved on to another company, they do away with all saluations, just address by name. That's more reasonable, and less stressful.

If people deliberately make mistakes, that is not consider as mistakes, they are in fact sabotaging the company, family or friends.
Most mistakes occur in our attempts to try new things, or in the routine life. For example, the reporter types the story in the MS Word, he or she may misspell the name of a famous person. Sometimes even the editor does not catch the mistake. When the newspaper is out, the famous person will make a lot of noise, and demands apology

Sometimes the annoying thing is that we are more tolerant of our mistakes, but cannot forgive others who make the mistake.
Many bosses are like that. They bite your head off if you make mistake, but they keep quiet if they make mistakes, some even push the responsibility towards the subordinates and blame them for his mistake.

Hi Dragon54u, wow, you are marvelous, you can still remember the name of the teacher. I hardly can remember any teacher from elementary school.
She's right, and I like her advice. But I read some better advices, saying that we should learn not only from our own mistakes, but from the mistakes of others. It is very costly to make all kind of mistakes and to learn from them. Far cheaper and wiser to learn from the mistakes that others make.
