| |  The Live CD is a CD that contains a complete, operable operating system that can be run from the CD simply by booting from it. They don't usually affect the existing operating system that is installed on the hard disk though some versions may write to the hard disk, so changes can be saved. There are a number of Linux versions which can be had in Live CD versions, of which Knoppix (Debian based) was the first and Ubuntu (in various forms) is one of the most popular.

In order to create the bootable CD, you will need a CD-RW drive and software to allow you to write the supplied ISO to disk. You can also order the CD from the site but this, of course, is not free.
