Why are you not in church? |
|
Do you ever get this question from friends, family, or just nosey passersby? Never mind that if they are around to ask you then they are obviously not in church either , but sometimes the question comes later in a different form. The point is always: how can you be a good person if you don't go to church/mosque/temple?
Do you need the actual Saturday or Sunday visit to be a good practitioner? Are you less of a believer if you don't go regularly? Or don't go ever?
Do you tire of having to explain yourself, or your religious views? Or maybe you have a stock answer that you'd like to share?

1. Rollo1 (1540) | 6 months ago | There are seasons in everyone's life. In some seasons, gathering with others in church yields the crop, in other seasons it may be dry and one has to rest in God until our earth (heart) is once again ready to receive a seed. In any case, it is God who plants and waters that seed within. He is with us as long as we seek Him, in any location, in any season of our lives. The only time to question whether or not you need to be in church is not when others ask you why you are not there, it's when you feel an urging in your spirit that keeps asking why you are not there.

2. kquiming (497) | 6 months ago | ok why am i not in the church especially today that it's actually sunday? hmm... i know for a fact i should be in the church, but well, i have my own reasons. well i guess my faith is more than just going to the church anyway and i am comfortable with that... i do pray, i am thankful and grateful for the little things i have, and i don't whine about little things that i can't get... but if i could go to the church whenever i can, why not... but i have to accept that in reality i won't be able to always do that every sunday or so

3. efc872 (519) | 6 months ago | I went to church last Sunday night, it was a fellowship night for singers from different churches. There was one outstanding group that offered their CD on the projection screen during the service. What was also outstanding was how the manager of the group was conducting his sales and counting money on the bench and making change during the service. The second thing that I observed was the deacon who was emceeing the program was obviously not in the best of health (suffering from diabetes) telling the congregation about the power of prayer that God will answer all prayers. As a christian if you see a money grabber operating in church and a sick deacon telling a lie, what would be your reaction? You don't need the church to be good. If this is religion, I don't need it period.

agv0419 (2013) | 6 months ago | I also don't go to church for 3 years now. I stop going to church because the sermon of the priest in our area is to long and he concentrates more in political topics. In my opinion he should not interfere about the issues because church and government is different. I believe in God so I think not going to church can't affect my faith in HIM. Sometimes I feel that way too why church charge everything in church activities like wedding, baptism and many more. Money are always involved in church activities.

heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | Hopefully everyone was at least praying for the Deacon. The commercialization of Church only detracts from any message trying to be sent. Good answers!

4. ckyera (2230) | 6 months ago | as for me, i regularly go to church, coz i feel that it is my obligation/duty to God. and through this worship services i received foods for my soul which is i think more important than anything else. being a good person cannot be measure just by being always on church coz i can still see some people who are always present on church services but they are not doing what they learn from church...the hypocrites one. i think that going to church regularly can also give attributes in becoming a good person, if we just practice what we've learn from there. as i've said through worships we received words from God and teaches the gospel that i believe will make us a better person if only we practice it and use as a guidelines for our daily life...
have a nice day!:-)

heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | Thanks. It would seem obvious that the power of religion is within us, not in some building, but not everyone sees that I fear.

5. angel_of_charm (2700) | 6 months ago | I'm not in church not because I don't believe in God, I do. Its just sometimes there so many things that are not appropriate that I am seeing inside the church, there are people inside church whom they call their selves righteous but can undignify a person so easy.
They come and go to church on a routine basis but the preaches and sermons doesn't seem to sink in to their minds. I believe in God and His words, I know how to pray even if I'm not in church, I know what is wrong from right even if I'm not in church and I question other people of why they can't be kind and giving while they portray righteousness just because they are seen inside the church.I even see people go to church just to gossip another church member during the mass. They don't even listen to the sermon, its like they just go there to socialize and gossip somebody's life.
I hate to see religions by religions won't seem to respect an individual belief when they are trying to talk about the words of God. They attack the other religion just because it counters the way they preach the bible. It doesn't seem right for them to do those things at the first place since they call their selves the servants of God because from what I believe in servants of God are humble people.

|
|
heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | Church as a social gathering has always bothered me. I know the feeling of comraderie and fellowship are good draws, but gossip always seems to erupt from it.
| |
|
|
Rollo1 (1540) | 6 months ago | Maybe I am anti-social, or maybe I just don't want to automatically become friends with others who share one activity, but I have never gone to church for the social aspect. I really don't like the social aspect, it takes me a long time to feel comfortable with other people, being friends is not an instant thing.
When I go to church it is to hear God's word and to worship and commune with God. As far as all the other people, what they are there for or what they do is not my problem. That's between them and God. Most of the time, I sit with my eyes closed, what I don't see can't cause my mind to wander off into wondering what they are doing or why.
As long as there are people there will be distractions. Doesn't mean that you can't go to church when there are distracting people and gossip, just means you need to learn to shut it out and concentrate on God.
| |
|
|
heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | I have to continually remind people that I am not "anti-social", I'm "asocial". I don't dislike people and social gatherings, I just have no NEED for them like other people seem to. To me, that is an important distinction.

6. lotterylover (4731) | 6 months ago | I can't always go although my wife is pretty regular as she teaches a class. But it is nice when your church members will call and see how you are doing. We do have to drive 60 miles to go to the church of our choice so that is a handicap. Some people don't go because of the people in the religion or church of their choice. I think it is sometimes easier to be good if you don't go. The devil doesn't like it when you go to church and will work on your weak points. I don't mind having to explain my view points and beliefs.
| |
| |
|
|
heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | This brings up an interesting sidebar: What is the Devil's role in not going to church? Is he the one sitting on my shoulder telling me I'm too tired to go, or does not going just open a door for him to see weakness in us?
I'm not sure I have thought about this aspect of not going to church. Perhaps another question some time!
| |
|
|
lotterylover (4731) | 6 months ago | You have to consider the Devils part in keeping you out of church otherwise why would you wake up on church day with a headache or some other ailment when you don't as much on other days. Why is it that blizzard keep coming on the weekend when it has been fine all week? You have to know their is a being who doesn't want you to go when these things happen so much of the time.

7. wonttakelong (1595) | 6 months ago | This is something I deal with on a regular basis I very rarely go to church (once a month if that) I am not Christian, I dont believe in the Christian God, I dont believe in Jesus Christ or the patron saints or holy communion My kids go to church regularly because its something they enjoy and occassionally I will go with them to see what they have been doing when I go I do not disrupt the service or disrespect the church in any way however I do NOT participate in the communion my children have come to me and told me that some of the church members were asking WHY I dont participate that really bothered me because these people see me around town and they know where I live I think it is very wrong of them to ask my children why I dont do something I think its wrong of them to put my children in the middle like that If they were to ask me directly I would be happy to explain it but I will not use my kids as messenger pigeons

darkjedi (4381) | 6 months ago | Damn lol. That sucks that they are, hell do they actually think they can get a good explanation from a kid? Hell adults have a hard time explaining things at times, let a long kids.
And thats true, can take what they say and convert it.

8. Pose123 (5664) | 6 months ago | Hi heathcliff, My thoughts are that no one has the right to ask such a question. I feel that it's my business alone as to whether I attend church and who can say that those who attend church are better than others? If some people feel that attending church helps them that is great, but they should never assume that it would help another. If someone believes that God demands that we attend church then their God is very small indeed. Blessings.

heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | I'm laughing at the image your response gave me about a "small God". I have severe concerns that many people believe in a God that IS that petty. I'm afraid I know people like that.

10. xoxcharityxox (572) | 6 months ago | Today's sunday.. my answer, to anyone who asks, is well that's my business and I think my spirituality is a very personal topic. I don't think church in one form or another indicates your ability to be a good person in any way. It is simply something some people need to guide them through life. I refuse to explain my religious views unless I'm with people who I know are open minded and don't judge people for thier differences. There's nothing worse then people hounding you and arguing over something none of us can even prove. It is ridiculous to sit and fight with anyone over religion. I'm also one of those people who like to have fun with the jahovas witnesses and give them a few frights. That's just extremely fun.
| |
| |
|
|
heathcliff (791) | 6 months ago | I would think tellingpeople that it is personal would suffice. It is a shame that it is not the case sometimes.
