Do you sometimes think IT people are not needed? |
|
As an IT people, I sometimes encounter people saying IT people has lesser loads and an easy-go-lucky job because they dont see the real life in IT. They don't realize that in times of need and downtime, IT people are the super man/Hero. They are the one who spent holydays or non-working days for improvements and productivity as well as business continuity . They just need to realize that being an IT personel needs deep knowledge, critical thinking skills and hardwork to make a company successful..IT people even not seen what they are doing is still one of the challenging role in a company..Its fun and full of adventure..=)

1. astonysh (1824) | 7 months ago | we are usually not appreciated. We are usually the first people to be shown the door during a recession and the last to be employed when it is over. We are the most likely people to have our jobs outsourced to another part of the world where people are paid far less than we are, even if they are nowhere near as competent. We are expected never to make mistakes, and always take the blame when things go wrong. And there is no career structure - if you have been around this industry over 25 years, as I have, you are not seen as an experienced person who will work hard to learn new skills and provide effective solutions, you are judged to be a dinosaur who has reached the point of redundancy and is supposed to go and live on the money that financial advisors have gambled away.

astonysh (1824) | 7 months ago | just to clarify - my criticism of outsourcing is not aimed at India in particular, or any Indian IT staff. It is a general criticism of outsourcing. This could just as easily apply to China, Eastern Europe, the Philippines etc. My view is that if in Germany there are good talented people available to do a job, then German companies should look to use that talent, regardless of cost (you can replace Germany and German with England and English as alternatives if you like). Using outsourced staff not because they are more competent, but because they are cheaper, strikes me as short-sighted and unacceptable.

doncruise21 (100) | 7 months ago | thanks astonysh!!! yeah its feels a lot of pressure in our part to gave solutions to problems in less time. Business continuity relies on the IT people on a company. IT world is a fast phasing world. You need to be updated on the changes and developments that occur each day. Its a fact in our job that we need to do so to get in to the flow,or else you will be left behind. IT people are not appreciated mosely, but if they can take a look how challenging and how important IT is, they will know how to appreciate our efforts and hardwork..

| 2. dad_e_blogger (3) | 7 months ago | I am an IT support analyst and I enjoy my job and all. I use to think that IT support people are under-appreciated and taken for granted. I have learned that IT support staff are critical to the mission of any company. If you think about it, when computer systems are not working, people can't get work done. IT people are needed to set up IT systems to meet business needs.

Sometime IT consultants can be a pain in the @ss and just waste all your time and money. (Not saying the money goes to the IT ppl, it just goes to the stupid company)

doncruise21 (100) | 7 months ago | Its nice to use google stuffs to solve issues. But for your information, IT is not a waste on time and money. Have an open mind before you say that. Do you think your company will exist without us? every keystrokes you made, every emails you sent, every documents you print, we made possible because of IT..

astonysh (1824) | 7 months ago | I doubt whether any of the commercial solutions that I have provided over the years can be found on the Web. They are usually internal solutions for a particular company, testing an environment for that particular company, establishing and checking set-ups with Trading Partners, ensuring data updates are correct at both ends - and by ensuring that the system is efficiently run, keeping maintenance costs down. It is not a question of writing to a blogging site and finding why the sound is not working on my pc - that is not what most people who work commercially in IT do. As for the money, I have probably over the course of 28 years earned less than some financial advisors have earned in 2 years, and I have not gambled my money or anyone else's money away as these Wall Street wallahs, and their counterparts in London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong etc, have. We are not in demand? Then who is? I am intelligent, I speak four languages, I have a track-record for competence and efficiency, and I know commercial environments. I was interviewed last week for a position as a pensions advisor - not a bad role in theory, but they would not provide medical insurance (I had health issues last year NB), the starting income was a joke, and most of the potential income came from attracting other people to be agents for them rather than selling the product. Not my thing at all.

chaitra001 (598) | 7 months ago | Hi animestan please dont underestimate us(IT people). Please think about the mobile phone you are using and ATM(Automatic Teller Machine) which you use to do transaction with your bank accounts. Think if these were not there then people must have stood in long Queues infront of banks and telephone booths for very long time. IT people have contributed a lot to our daily life.
