Hi hiccup! I hate to say it, but I really have to agree with
you! Where I live in the USA and in particular the part of
NY that I live in there is a great mixture of people from
many different countries. In fact right in the very apartment
complex that I live in there are Whites, Blacks, Japanese,
Thais, Indian, Arabs, Moslums and others! And some are willing
to mix while others keep to their own kind! It is really very
upsetting to me since I was one of the original people here
in my neighborhood 29 years ago and these people have moved
in and pretty much taken over an don't seem to care to mix
but stay with their own kind! I take offense! I was here first
and if I don't have a problem with you, how dare you have a
problem with me! Quite frankly, I am in the minority now and
I should be the one harboring the resentment! If I am willing
to have an open mind then why aren't THEY????

Wow, you think that Australia is the only country being called racists? Come to America! Everyone here gets called racists, and most people don't deny it. I cannot be a racist because I have way too many ethnic/racial groups in my blood (I am mostly European, about 1/16th black and 1/16th Native American). I have a lot of different groups in me. I also come from a vary mixed family. I have Jewish, Mexican, Black, Asian, and Native American cousins, and the list keeps growing, but I know so many people who hate the mix, and I cannot understand why. Anyone here remember the Romans? Check the History Channel. They were more mixed than anyone can imagine. Deep down, we are all mixed.

I do not think that is racist but it seems if you are white if you stare at someone of another country, or express curiosity you are considered racist. And even if two groups where one is Hindu or Brahman and the others Muslims go against each other they are not blamed only the majority of the host country in which they live.
It is as if if you are any color other then white or pink or beige you can call the other group all sorts of names and get away with it.
To me racism employs lynching, armed thugs going into houses and apartments beating up people, and blaming someone of that ethnic group for the crime that some evil person of that ethnic group did.

For me being a racist is being deliberate in exclusion and discrimination of a person or group of persons because just because they come from different culture and country. But you have said so far are things that I just find as boundaries born out of natural differences. We have Indians, Americans, Arabs and English here in my country but they also stick together and we also approach them hesitantly, well, because they are just different and may think differently. But the challenge there is learning how to pry them open and accept them. One won't just wake up & know them right away or be comfortable with them. Human nature, we are hesitant to approach who are different from us and those who are alike, just group together. There is nothing racist with that. It's just part of the process when one immerses oneself in another culture. Acceptance and understanding doesn't come overnight. One would only be a racist when one refuses outright to bridge the gap and try to understand, tolerate those who are different.

Not one Aussie has ever said anything nasty to me because I'm white. Not one.

But seriously, folks...

Anybody can cry racism. We get it here in California when benefits aren't offered to illegal aliens, when government documents aren't offered in languages other than English, etc. I'm sure there ARE Aussies who are racists, just like there are people from the US who are. But to say the entire country is racist is ridiculous.

I have a friend that live in Australia and he has a beautiful black girl friend and he is white. So I think that this is probably not true for everyone living there.

Do you agree that there will always be a few rotten apples in a barrel? I hope that you can realize that there would not be any bad press if there was no incident to start off. Would any sane and logical guest(s) want to incur the wrath of the gracious host? Most of all, would the press be liable for this bad and erroneous report? I am sure with such an orderly country like yours, I am sure of it that the legal consequences will be there for erroneous and misled accounts of the press.

I feel that you should not be so reactionary as%$#@$!@# this, because, IMHO, you do not represent the majority and especially not those who are racists. Just because you are not a racist does not mean that there are no racists in your country. You did mention a valid point that the Lebanese gang is being responsible for the "bashing" however, would the victims be so careless or ignorant with their testimonies? I just beg to differ here as I could not believe that ALL of the victims could not tell the difference between a Lebanese and an Australian. Why would they want to incur more trouble when they already have 2 hands full?

I am not saying that there are no good and honest loving people in Australia, yet like all other developed countries there will always be some bad characters to spoil the day. If not, then I am sure that the penal and legal codes are or rather would not be NECESSARY at the end of the day.

To be fair, just let time and your country's legal system work and play out here. That is if you are still having faith with your country's crime fighting effectiveness and legal system. So, I do not know about you here, but I am sure that justice will prevail at the end of the day where the victims will get a redress and the culprits be brought to justice.

All i can say about this is that there are actually a few attacks on students and probably particularly indians but not all of them are racist.Even the indian students living in Australia know that the situation is being exaggerated from indian point of view.Demonstrations from indians are coming as they have come to know that Indians back home are really angry about it and it is fuelling the matter.

As you are saying that there is some form of racism in India,China or Africa, you are right, many people get nuts after watching white people like they are some kind of aliens.But never would you be beaten up by people for just fun like some cases against indians

I guess we would all seem different if we went to a different country. I'm sure if I went to Mexico, Africa or even Australia I'd be stared at and wondered about simply b/c I wouldn't fit in. It's not being rude or racist, simply curious. To claim it's racist shows that the person claiming it doesn't know the meaning of the world. As I understand it, a racist is someone who hates another group of ppl for no particular reason other than they don't like the color of their skin. It's not based their behavior, attitude or anything other than the color of their skin. Stupid actually. If I don't like someone or a group of ppl it's for a legitimate reason not something dumb like skin color.
