my latest laundry soap experiment |
| |
| so i was thinking soap is soap right? so why do we have so many different soaps for all the different things we do. i live in a small place and just dont have the room to have a million different containers sitting around. a simple google search of using dish soap for laundry soap got me the answer i was looking for i have skin issues and need gentle soap. ivory dish soap concentrate is all i can use to do the dishes with out breaking out and i have to give my clothes an extra rinse cycle to make sure that i dont break out from the laundry soap.. i found that lots of ladies were using a mixture of 7 parts water to 1 part dish soap for laundry soap. now the articles i read used ajax dish soap to get the husbands grubby work clothes clean.... here is what i have been doing for about 3 months now and it works great!!!! i used an old laundry soap container one that was a concentrated one... 7 cap-fulls water to 1 cap full of ivory dish concentrate. i use the line that you would if it were the store bought. cleans my clothes better than any laundry soap i have ever bought. no more wasting water on the extra rinse cycle. no more rash around the panty line. ouch. it seems to be way cheaper that laundry soap and those big bottles of ivory last what seems to be forever. takes up much less room in my cleaning supplies spot. hope this helps someone. do any of you do this? any suggestions or comments always appreciated. hope you have a wonderful day!!! | | | | | |

| | Hey that's brilliant! I too have very sensitive skin and break out with anything that is over perfumed. I had for years been using dove to bath with but now I found this honey citrus stuff that is all natural at big lots real cheap and OMG I love it. The stuff even took away my dandruff ***embarrassed** I had it bad. I wonder if it would work for the laundry too? It only comes in small bottles as far as I know but I bet it wouldn't take much at all to get the clothes clean LOL. So the Ivory dish soap works real good? I'll have to give that a shot :) | | | | | | |

| | give the soap you like a shot for laundry soap! from what i read you can use almost any soap as laundry soap as long as you use the 7 part water to 1 part soap ratio!!!! the way i look at it is if you make a small amount then the worst that can happen is it dont really get your clothes clean and you have to wash a load over again.. trial and error is the only way to learn such things! i am spoiled with oil of olay for my soap in the shower... lol dont think i will ever change. i have even rolled my pennies to buy it! | | | |

| | Hi Olydove...Walmart sells a Royal Bee gift set for $14.88 which includes body wash, body lotion, a foot cream, hand cream, two lip balms and a loofah...that is a great deal for the money. I use the stuff as well and I love it. I am diabetic and the foot cream is terrific!!!! | | | |

| | ROFL spalladino we decided one time to use liquid dish soap in the dishwasher and I told my husband " Honey don't put too much in there " We always wash the dishes by hand first and then run them through to sterilize them well he put too much and before we knew it the kitchen floor was full of bubbles but hey I got my floor clean :)) | | | |

| | lmao!!! yeah thanks to the brady bunch i knew that you couldnt just use the dish soap straight in the washer. i havent really done the figures but the ivory dish concentrate cost less than a single thing of laundry soap and lasts what has to be 10 times longer! | | | |

| | LOL @ thebeadoodler It was funny and well the floor did need to be mopped anyhow so technically we "killed two birds with one stone" by accident even ROFL. I imagine it would be a much better deal livin because laundry soap these days has gone through the darn roof! Of course so has everything else :) I'm really glad you started this discussion it gives me a little something to look forward too tomorrow while doing laundry ( as I really hate doing laundry anyways ) ROFL! | | | |

| | Good goin'. Easy way to make laundry soap. Thanks for sharing. My laundry soap is a little more complicated, but much much cheaper than buying it ready made. I think it's time we all took a good hard look at the things we buy and think "why so many different products?" | | | | | | |

| | oh yeah. why so many products. i am just plain out of room. we live in a small apartment and i am always looking for ways to save space time and money. the laundry soap i was making was way cheaper too but it was the kind where you use shaved soap melt it down and some washing soda and borax. was great since i have a life time supple of half used bars of Irish spring but i just dont have the room for all the stuff that took anymore. the dish soap takes up at least 75% less room. thanks for your response! have a wonderful day!!! | | | |

| | This makes sense to me. I am glad to know the ratio for mixing my own. If you buy an extra large container of dish soap it seems to me that it would be even cheaper. I know that I have often felt we had too many soap and cleaning choices--for instance body wash and shampoo--both are for use in the bath, just on different parts. I know that now they manufacture some all in one products, and it just makes sense. I think it makes sense for the environment as well and keeps more packaging out of the landfill. | | | | | | |

| | yep yep. now i do love my oil of olay bar soap for my face, but i only use it for my body if i want to pamper myself or am having dry skin issues.... other wise i use a 32 oz size bottle of olive oil based shampoo that i get for a buck at the dollar tree for shampoo and body wash. last a long time and is way cheaper than others... | | | |

| | I have never done this, but I thought about it. I probably would have just used a teaspoon or so of dish detergent. It makes sense to me. Soap is soap is soap, and why we need a dozen different kinds is beyond me. I have used cheap shampoo to mop the floor and clean the bathroom and it works very well. A lot cheaper than specialty cleaners. | | | | | | |

| | i thought about using a teaspoon or something but it was much easier to teach the kid how to do laundry if i could use the same laundry soap container and same measurements at every house she lives. its hard to be the cheap parents when the kid has two sets of parents. act like she never understands how to do stuff cuz "my mom dont do it that way" lol | | | |

| | Actually, I have done this before, but I never knew the exact ratio. I always just added what I thought that I needed. I have also used Softsoap liquid hand soap for laundry. I think that it is important to do things like this to help with costs and the environment. I also use vinegar as a fabric softner as it works as well if not better than commercial ones. | | | | | | |

| | HMMMM!! I may have to try that. I make my own laundry soap and it is only about a penny a load. Usually make three or four gallons at a time and then share witrh my family. I use different kinds of bar soap and the one my granddaughter likes best is the Ivory because of my great-grandkids. Myself I love the Irish Spring. Thank you for the tip. It is a money saver and I am all for that. Me=not cheap, just frugal. I am on a fixed income as I am a widow and these things help a lot. | | | | | | |

| | i used to use probably about the same recipe you do for making it lots at a time with bar soap, borax and washing soda, but in this tiny place i had to start finding better ways to use my space. when and if i ever get to a bigger place i will go back. it was a cleaner smelling and cost just a bit less per load. | | | |
