Numbers of democrats are pushing for laws that would force the white race to pay the black race for things the white race did nearly 100 years ago.
How do you feel about a law such as this and why?

well i agree with the idea of an apology but monetary pay outs seem a bit extreme

Thank you for your responses,It seems to apology for what another person has done is over the top let a lone for a whole generation of people nearly 100 years ago.
Injustice has been done to most people I'm all for moving on and getting on with life and being thankful for what I have today and not living in the pass.
Bottom line picking scabs keep the sore infected best to leave it long so it can heal.

well apologising for gross injustice does seem ok to me even if all concerned are dead now, and then perhaps the whole thing can be left alone. i do agree that there might be an element of scab picking with this issue but it was a pretty extreme abuse of human rights

Well first of all none of my relatives had slaves, and what happen over a 100 years ago, time to get over it. I am not paying anyone for what someone a 100 years ago done. I think the blacks need to get on with their lives and stop crying that they been done wrong. They could still be in Africa and if they don't like the life that they have been given here in the USA, because of a past relative being brought over here then let them go back to where ever they think is so great. This cra*p with slavery has been over for many years, and I get so sick of hearing them complain I owe them something. I don't owe them a dam*n thing, as me and my family didn't do anything to them. If they want paid let them go find the families that had their relatives as slaves and sue them. As for an apologize, yes I am sorry that our white race find it so hard to cook their own meals or work their farms and that they bought a person to do the work for them. I know a lot of them was treated badly, but I didn't do it so why should I have to pay. It is over, move on with your life.

The law is clear in this instance. There is no legal basis for any reparations for any person today living in the USA as a result of having had a slave ansestor. The point of law that makes this crystal clear is that in order to obtain compensation in a lawsuit one must be able to show that they were damaged as a result of the actions of the entity being sued. As no person living in the USA today was ever a slave (such a person would be entitled) and that descendants of slave benefited from having a slave ansestor, no one is entitled to receive reparations as a result of slavery having once been legal in the USA.

In the above it was said that people with slave ansestors benefited. How can this be? All one has to do to verify this is look at the parts of Africa where the slaves came from. This would be where the descendants of slaves would be living if the slaves had not been take to America. All those places are poverty and disease ridden. All descendants of slaves living in the USA are very lucky. But for their slave ansestors, they could be like President 0bama's 1/2 brother living in a large box in Kenya.

This is really getting old. I'm sorry that some of the Black American's ancestors were slave. But I didn't have any thing to do with it. If The government was to pay them for what was done to them over a hundred years ago what about all the horrible things done to the American natives. Things like taking their land and forcing them to reservations and trying to wipe out their culture? everyone needs to get over the past not forget it but move on. The slave culture has done alot to enrich our society today but the past is just that the past.

just because you can think of a greater injustice doesn't mean the thing was in the least right. it was an awful thing to happen and i'm sorry but i do think the states should apologise for it. jb x

germany has managed to apologise for the holocaust one politciam went on their knees about this, maybe the states should have the same grace...

myLot reputation of 97/100. deebomb (8966)   ranked 149 out of 6,344 in politics  6 months ago

Many states have apologized for the past but this isn't about apologizing but about giving them money for that past wrong and I don't agree with it. Did Germany give the decedents of the holocaust money for what was done to the Jews and others?

Glad you brought that up because I was going to if someone hadn't. My ancestors had to alter their last name (dropped the "O" in front) in an attempt to avoid being identified as Irish when they first came to this country. My grandfather used to tell me stories told to him by his father about Irish indentured servants and how immigrants from Ireland were treated. Your name is your identity. I grew up with an altered last name that did not allow me to take pride in my Irish heritage. Money can't give that back to me...money can't make up for the events of the distant past.

I also grew up without knowing my heritage as I was adopted. It wasn't until I met my maternal grandmother that I found out I was O'Neill clan. Now trying to find the history is proving quite difficult.

I actually started a discussion not long ago about this VERY topic. Did we hear the same radio broadcast? LOL

Anyway, I do not feel that we are responsible for the actions of our ancestors. We certainly should not have to pay monetary (or any other) compensation for something that happened so long ago. You do not hear of anyone trying to sue the descendants of African tribal leaders who lived during that time for working WITH the people who were catching the slaves that were sold and brought to America to work. I seem to remember something from the history books that mentioned some of those tribal leaders actually selling members of their tribes to the slave traders, yet no one is trying to sue their descendants, or at least I have not heard of a single law suit of this nature.

No we should not pay them anything...

In your responses people that know history then know as you said African tribal leaders sold their own in to slavery.
I was reading the other day Muslin's made African's their slaves, that part of history say's more then 141 million slaves keep by Muslims was inhumanly beat to death, starved to death, the women raped then beat to death.
White slave keepers actually many was good to their slaves and history tells the story slaves not always wanted to leave their white masters.
It was a terrible time in history with out question and this is why their will be a final judgement day by God Almighty.
Many of the black people that pick at slavery long before any of our time will be the first to tell you they belong to this church or that church and go to church every week and have for all their life's,seems to me them same people never learned the true meaning of forgiveness.
To forgive is not to pick at old scabs and what the guilty party to pay anything because they have been after all forgiven.
Sad as it is people that teach little children in the home and church resentment, bitterness and hate really need to look at the blood running their city streets and understand this is directly due to chidlren being taught to hate others people.
Actually people should see it as a blessing in the end, just think if Mr & Mrs Barack Obama,Jessy Jackson,Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan had not been born in the United States they all would not be millionaires living in mansions as they are today.

In regards to paying reparations, I have never heard an adequate explanation of how they would figure out who deserves reparations and who does not. Not every African American has ancestors who were slaves in this country. Many African Americans have only been in this country for a generation or two. Some come here from Europe. A LOT of them lived in the North and were never slaves. Also, prior to Africans coming over here, there were white slaves, Native American slaves, etc. No one ever talks about paying THOSE people reparations. I think it is about time that this country moved on. We are never going to have a brighter future if we cannot let go of our past.

Actually it was well over 100 years ago. I'm not sure who the "numbers of Democrats" that are pushing for this are but I know the Senate voted to apologize but it included a disclaimer saying it did not include any reparations. I understand some in the Congressional Black Caucus in the House aren't happy with that disclaimer but they make up a relatively small percentage of the House of Representatives.

I wasn't alive when slavery still existed or shortly after it had been abolished but if I had been perhaps I'd have been in favor of this back then. Now none of my relatives who are still alive or even any who I'd ever known in my lifetime had owned slaves, if any ever did to begin with. No, I'm not for paying reparations now after all this time had passed. I think the apology should have come generations ago but I guess it's better late than never.

I agree, I like to think that I would have been for reparations for people who were slaves back then... regardless of color or nation of origin.

If I know these politicians now a days, they'll take reparations from white people, then tax them before they get to the recipients, just a hunch.

Anyway, I so no plus it will open the doors for many others wanting reparations, lets say the indians.

It's nothing but racism.

myLot reputation of 71/100. goldeneagle (3473)   ranked 954 out of 6,344 in politics  6 months ago

they just want money because they are black and they think they have a claim...who the hell can I sue? I am a white dude with a physical handicap. I can't get approved for disability. I want to get some money from somewhere too. Who the hell can I sue for wrongdoings against the white race?? Any ideas?? LOL

myLot reputation of 59/100. ParaTed2k (4586)   ranked 406 out of 6,344 in politics  6 months ago

That's why reparations for slavery is a blatantly racist concept. The people pushing for it want it for all Black Americans and only Black Americans, regardless of heritage. They also don't want it for anyone else with ancestors who were enslaved.

So it really has nothing to do with slavery at all, but everything to do with race.
