The tv shoes and movies you mention do seem to say promiscuity is OK. While most Americans tolerate it among celebrities, "real" life is, for most, much different. Sexuality is still spoken of in whispers, along with nervous giggles. A girl who is admired by too many boys is assumed to be a tramp, and a boy who dates too many girls is assumed to be after just one thing, and both are looked down upon. There are all sorts of double and triple standards at work here, while the country constantly re-invents itself and figure out how to modernize.
Incidentally, I teach high school English, and I'm sad to admit yours is better than most of my students' I admire you tremendously for such an effort and success!

about the foreigners here, that's totally the opposite. being the fact of past invasion history to China, westeners receive high respect here!!very high. westerners are supposed to be rich, they can bring biz here, they speak good english, and China is still catching up with the world! somehow it's sort of mean to think that way, but i guess those top other reasons. even for other nationalities, we still stay friendly, we don't have strong superiority feeling over any race, skin color. Instead, i heard many people telling me Americans don't like Chinese!! Chinese people are tucked between your legs as a third country people. that's very disappointing to me.and for the choices of our own lifestyle, they are just augmented pictures. coz in the past we indeed follow parents' decisions a lot, and govs do hold big controls about citiizens ' choices. but that's almost 50 years ago!!! Gosh, outsides really got upgrade their media staffs!
