AVOIDING SCAMS, MY FRIENDS, (one of three) email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend7 months ago

There's a program on TV that only comes on once a week but I like the guy callled "Doctor Shopper", who advises consumers, and one of the things he does is denounce new scams and stuff that's going on.
I was going to write him but it's been troublesome getting into his site, so I figured instead I'd come to you and tell you about some experiences I have had that you should maybe watch out for.

I'm thinking this might be too long for just one post, so I'm going to break it down into three stories, and you want to read them...
Lesson # 1.
I was busy but I am normally courteous, especially with tele-marketers, because I know they make their living mostly from commissions.
So this magical sounding lady calls me to tell me about a special deal of subscriptions to about twenty magazines (dirt cheap!), and I told her I already had too much to read but she insisted it was such a great deal and asked me if I didn't THINK so, and WOULD I be interested.
I told her several timesthat 1) I was too busy to think it through and 2) I NEVER close deal over the phone but YES, I would consider the offer if she would send me some WRITTEN literature and yes, it SOUNDED like a good deal.
BAD!!!*NEVER SAY YES to ANYthing.* angry
I started receiving all these magazines even though I didn't even give a credit card number or anything solid. Apparently they had whatever they needed because that's the way they work.
I tried to call them but there was no-one to call, and when they finally started to call me, trying to collect, I told them I never consented or accepted but I was told they had me ON A RECORDING saying "yes" (NO SCREAMING SH*T!!)
To this day (3 years now) I'm still receiving SOME of the publications although I have yet to pay for one issue. BUT I bet my name is mud somewhere. ninja

That's lesson one, stay tuned... cool

Wow, I've never heard of that one before. They took you good, my friend.

I know telemarketers have a job to do and I respect that, but I know there isn't a single thing they could offer me that I would even consider, so I don't even let them 'in the door'.

I politely say I'm not interested and then hang up. I wonder if they could edit the tape and just include the 'interested' part and get me - let 'em try!

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend  7 months ago

Apparently one can't even afford to be courteous and should either hang up on them or stick to "No, No and No"

It's really a pity because, like I said, I don't like being rude and I feel for them. But you can't; you just can't.

I think they did something like what you're saying, because that's the only way I know they could have any such recording. I know for a fact that I did not agree to the offer. It was crazy to begin with. Who the heck would want that many magazines? Besides the fact that several weren't even interesting to me.

Actually it sounds more like you took them good. Seeing as you haven't had to pay for anything...

I have read all three of these. And the advice is good.

But when it comes right down to it, when you talk, your mouth gets you in trouble.

And just so you know, a voice recording saying yes is inadmissable in court because of the fact that the recording cannot be verified.

Further, there is no way that these companies record and log every voice recording. That too was a scam. Somebody tries pulling that shiit on me, and my response is a smile and the words, "GO FOR IT!! BRING IT ON...I DARE YOU!!"

Thus ends a perfectly good threat....

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend  7 months ago

And I think you must be into politics, you scoundrel, you!!! (jus kiddin; you jus got to get to know me) lolWHY didn't you answer the other two? HUH? YOU CHEAPSKATE!!!
(same as above, which read)
Oh, forget it; I'm irritated this afternoon, since my wife has taken on soaps!!!!
I CAN'T STAND SOAPS!!!!!!!!!!Anyway, thanks for the compliment, but I learned all that, the hard way..no ofense.
BUT YES INDEEDY, they CAN and they WILL record stuff, and use it for their own devices. ninjaAnd what I did was exactly what you say now...I told them I didn't even care what they had on record; I told them it was false and would not even listen to it when they asked. That it was an obvious farce. Those haven't called again.
BUT YOU'RE RIGHT; the mouth can get you in LOTS of trouble.
( girls should especially listen to that ) lol

Okay, so lesson one is never to say yes to anything especially on the phone when you don't know the person. Lesson two, turned down if you're not interested. Saying no is as easy as one, two three. Lesson three is to never entertain or give chance from someone who is calling you and selling you something you don't need. Most of the time, cutting the conversation as fast as we can will save us the opportunity to say yes!lol

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend  7 months ago

Good nuff. The briefer the better and definitely avoid saying yes altogether, to any question. It is safer to call them than anybody who calls you. The item you left out is that you can always do better than any initial offer. ninja

Thank you for sharing your experince.. I have never really liked telemarketers.. I understand that it may be a great business but you can not see the product that they are offering, it could just be a scam like here.. So normally when they can not just take no for an answer I will just hang up the phone.. I have tried to be nice to these people but they are so pushy, and sometimes out right abusive.. and i figure that I do not have to waste my time on the phone with someone that I do not want to have a conversation with..

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend  7 months ago

I feel bad for telemarketers because they at least work for a living and it is not easy, because, from what I understand they mostly depend on commissions. But I agree with you that you can't even be certain of what you're getting and they can be a nuisance. I think one of the most important things I wanted to point out is that you have to be sure of your presence of mind...don't forget that the first experience I mentioned was triggered by a "perceived need",which was not necessarily reasonable... I could not afford it but luckily I made out.
Thanks for your interest SJ. happy

Your welcome.. Yes I agree with you, I feel bad for telemarketers.. But I do not have an income that allows me to make wild purchases.. And sometimes the deal sounds so wonderful, I would love to sit there and do it, but the money just is not there.. So sometimes I get frustrated, and sometimes take it out on them when they can not just take no for an answer..

Thankfully, I've never had anything like that happen... but I can say that I absolutely HATE pushy salespeople.

About six months ago I added my home phone number to the 'do not call register' here in Australia to get rid of all those pushy sales calls asking me to change my phone service provider, get cheaper calls etc.

The do not call register basically adds your phone number to a blacklist which telephone sales operators are not permitted to call unless you have personally given them permission (like I am registered with a couple of market research companies who call me to let me know when surveys and group discussions etc are going). Anybody else rings and I have the right to sue the a**es off them for their breach of the rules.

It worked really well, within two weeks I went from receiving 4-5 calls per week from salespeople to none!

Anyway, it might be worth checking whether something similar is available where you are.

Unfortunately, you can't add a business number to the register so if you run a business, either at home or externally, you can't ban the salespeople from calling you.

Thanks Jewel. Yes, we have the no-call list in the US but the second story I told was made (strangely) to my celphone!
And, like I said, the gal really sounded nice...I would have never suspected such a dirty scam. angry
It's like you have to be pre-determined to resist because, like I also said on the third story, this guy was really sweet (and I'm Xtremely straight!) doh

I haven't heard of this one either.

I try not to get on these calls at all. If the husband answers the phone, I've got him (mostly)trained to screen the calls since he doesn't mind taking them. And if I pick up the phone and there's too long of a hesitation before a person comes on (machine dialed call), I just hang up.

I hate talking to telemarketers at all, but if I say no and they start arguing with me about why I should say yes, I just hang up.

myLot reputation of 86/100. mechanicNOT62 (1590)   ranked 255 out of 12,477 in friend  6 months ago

Yeah, I do a lot of hanging up too, especially on machine dialed calls. And I often use my phone's option to just turn off the ringer on an unwanted call. The worst is when one of my girls picks up the phone and brings it to me, AAAAARGH! angry
