Be more friendly to new members.

I 100% agree that the new members should read the guidelines,TOS and FAQs before they post but the reality is that some don't.
Personally I would rather try and be constructive rather than just reporting a new member.

I try and point out mistakes to new users
but when an apparently 'new' user has only been through the washer and is fully aware of what they are doing here, and indeed that is the main purpose they joined in the first (and second and third and fouth) plaece, it can be cause for a backlash A great many of them are not as new as they appear to be

That is a good point.
If they had completely changed their username and avtar then I doubt if I would recognise them as their old profile.
Maybe that comes with time spent here and more interaction with members.

thats another thing Mike, some dont know english that well and i even try to understand and reply to what they are saying also, like you do. frankly i like the fact that there are so many different cultures,countries, races, etc. here. its what makes it more interesting. i think its sad that people report someone right off the bat before they get a chance to find out how wonderful this site is.

This site is what it is today because it give a chance for us all to mix with people we would otherwise never have met. Mylot is a cultural mixing pot and I love it for that. I have learnt a great deal here and been paid for the priviledge!! Where else could you get that?

I would advise reading the discussion guidelines as soon as you can and then gradually the FAQs.
It is best to read them all first but I didn't either as they are boring. Just ask any older members on your friends list about any issues you may have.
I'm sure they wouldn't mind the occasional PM..or just start a discussion if you can't find the answer anywhere else.

Most members are very nice but some seem very harsh with their reporting but what I don't like the most is the abuse of the rating system with inappropriate -ratings.
I agree that some members join Mylot purely to promote their own money making activities. Normally they are easy to spot if their profile is checked. I normally do this now before posting explanations to new members as I don't want to waste my time helping the spammers as they are a pain in the behind.They will ruin the site if they are allowed to carry on as you are right about it putting off new members and also it would put off advertisers and lose the site the revenue that it pays us all with.
Good idea about the violation software and while they are sorting that out they could give the mature content tagging system a good overhaul as it is very very annoying!

Mike as I said up there 'new' is not always what it appears. If you see a new user with no posts and a fully prepared profile loaded with banners you can bet anything they are not on their first ride here. Check out a banner and youget their previous username too. Those types know what they can and cannot do and a majority do not care sadly.

Then there are those with only a few posts that think YahooAnswers copied and pasted here will make them a living No words of warning, however gently spoken, will get them to see what is right and wrong as they never get back to read

You make a valid point.
I'm not able to recognise 'washed' members so just prefer to give the benefit of the doubt to people as it only takes a minute to write a short sentence.
If I came across them again and they were still doing the same then I may well report them as they are just ignoring the friendly advice.

You don't get financially rewarded as your post gets deleted but I think you will agree that if you get one good friend from every ten deleted posts you will have been rewarded many times over for that one post that gained you that friend.

Those friends don't usually arrive from the money interests but from all the others - and the ratio is much higher than 1 in 10 Of course then, persnally, I have another 'problem' - trying to keep up with them all! Some of them are spurred on by having older users in their friend list and I then feel I can't 'abandon' them and when they are so prolific it's hard to be everywhere. That's when I just barge in and leave a comment hoping that will be enough to let them know they are thought of. All that is what makes it fun on here too

The colours don't mean anyting except all the same numbers are the same colours.
The number is the important bit or not important depending on how you see it. I am not making much sense I expect.

If you pass your mouse over the star you will see a number.
The colours depend on the number which is the total percentage of positive and negative ratings that a user has received for their activity here.
95+ is blue, 85+ is red and 75+ is yellow and the oters follow the same pattern too.

Some users are 'new' at least once a week and just do not care.

We should all follow the 'do's' and not only the 'don'ts' in the Guidelines. All of them, inluding the second and third ones, and those who do so are doing so for the benefit of the entire community and should not be given labels just because others are not concerned about what goes on here

everybody deserves a chance, like i said no one thoroughly reads the guidelines before they click on the accept button. i don't believe any new members have taken time to do that when they first join so polite guidance is all that's required.

it started where i was accused of attacking certain people. i didn't attack anyone. i merely stated a fact. this site is patrolled by self appointed mylot police who like to report rather than respond to discussions, they report petty violations just to gain smug satisfaction.

I will go to discussions by new users and point out their mistakes, and post them a link to the guidelines and suggest they read them.

I don't go around reporting things unless they are blatant violations repeatedly made by the same person continuously...

myLot actually asks us to report violations...but there are times when a gentle nudge to the user is far more effective (and reasonable) than reporting them.

myLot police are like any police...there are good ones and bad ones...

Giving users labels (idiots, police, coppers, outcasts etc.) could possibly be considered as 'attacking' by some. Personally I have accumulated so may labels that one or more others just add to the fun.

Just as there is no rule which mentions Robert67 so there is no rule naming others who have stated their own opinion here - maybe that is what is ruffling the feathers? Anyone from new users to veterans can state their opinion and that is what makes a discussion and what we earn for (in case you had forgotten it is what many of us do on here - discuss )

I don't want it to descend into personal issues being aired as that isn't much fun.

I suggest any member with a problem with another member should try and resolve differences through the PM system.

I don't like conflict between friends and I think that it can all be resolved as there is actually no real difference of opinion as such as far as I can see.

If anyone wants to they are welcome to pm me and as I have lots of time I would be pleased to act as some sort of mediator if it would help. I am quite sane really I just had a stressful day yesterday and drank alcohol which I don't ever do.
