Be more friendly to new members.

Everyone who has been here more than a week or so is capable of helping a new member.
Just because some of us don't have 1000 posts to our name or a 10 star doesn't mean we don't have any experience to pass on.

Somebody with 700 posts could easily have 10000 for all we know.
We should learn from the people who have a good understanding of parts of the site and who may have been around alot longer than post counts would suggest.

I can think of at least one member who as a couple of thousand posts now but probably 9000 if his previous profile was added to his account.

I was lucky that I had help when I started here and then spent so much time here I just picked up more and more.
This site has far more to it that what may first be apparent and learning as much as you can is a good way of making more money if that is your objective.

I try to learn as much as possible and then do what I can to pass it on because I know that it will benefit me in the long run. More happy members posting good discussions that aren't deleted means more for me to respond to.

I have had so many posts deleted now that I have lost count. Easily hundreds. That was because I got things wrong during some of my more dodgy 'experiments' but I have learnt alot from my mistakes.
Nobody can say they know everything about this site because alot of its inner workings are secret.

The things that new members need help with are often just the basics that they could easily find out through reading but maybe they want a safe topic to post on for their first discussion.

Reporting things certainly has it's place but I personally give people the benefit of the doubt and will continue to do so.

I may loose posts when my advise is deleted along with the discussion but I have made alot of good friends by helping newer people who in turn have helped me greatly when they have become established.

Mylot is the type of site where you will only gain by helping other members,you lose nothing but a bit of time and possibly a miniscule ammount of money.
Lets try and give all the unecessary reporting a rest and work as more of a team and we will all get the benefits as the site grows.

I must rectify after reading this 'just because someone puts a banner up in profile doesnt mean they are someone that was deleted from before' that I did not mean to imply that ALL new users with banners in their profiles are returns. If you click those banners VERY OFTEN the referral ID is that of a previous Lotter. That is for sure a way of confirming any doubts as to a repeat or not.

I didn't get the point about the banner thing but I see now what you are getting at.
I hadn't thought of checking the referral ID but I think it is a clever thought if you really want to discover if a user is really a renewed banned user. I can't really say much about that as I did the same although I haven't tried to hide the fact that it's me!!
Maybe I should have Photoshopped some dark glasses onto my avtar....that might have worked!

Users that have no reason to hide have nothing to fear by using their previous name, avatar and goodness knows what else. We all make mistakes but those I am talking about know ONLY how to make them and that's a different species all together

When you mention hub do you mean hub pages?
I have only visited here,ezihippo and gather but did plan to find more sites of this nature.
Ezihippo and gather have excellent features but the members are very different and I get the feeling there are much less of them than here.
Would be nice to know the actual number of active members rather than the total of registered profiles.

Nope Hub is a lot different then that. It has nothing to do with that at all. Its sort of a conspiracy, and experimental type of place, amongst many other wonderful things. All kinds of stuff in there as well as a big lounge where we all relax. Kick back our feet and talk about most anything. Even cuss folks out every now and then. Or fling a book.

To sum up the hub in a few words other then fun and enjoyable. It would be. Facts and fictions of alien life, Paranormal activity, solar activity, 2012, God, and Gods, Zombies, NDE's, and many, many, more wonderful and curios things. 75% of what is there has been researched to the point to where there are facts proving what is there is truth. Conspiracy areas are just that?? no, facts to back it up, but there is always some major debating. The newest and best thing right now is owlman? In Mexico?? It is kind of interesting and still we are looking up more proof.

Sometimes all I have done is posted a link to the guidelines and written read these.
Sometimes I have put a section of the guidelines in my response.

At the moment I'm doing nothing for new people as charity begins at home and I want my 500 so I can c & p again!!!

If they can't see they have gone wrong then I just don't bother as I'm not wasting time with people that won't be helped. I just come back after their discussion gets deleted and say 'told you so' very loudly!!!!!!

I am on a new pc in a new house with a very fast connection but a very noisy keyboard!!

I hope you like the new house. I know it must have been a very fast move. When we moved here it was 4 days drive so for 2 weeks I had no internet. Because they had to get everything hooked up here after the move. You was lucky to have gotten it done fast.

The deleting process isn't all human controlled I don't think but that is just my opinion.

A welcome is cool but along with advice if they are rule breaking is the full welcome passage.

Sometimes I look at tags on a very new users discussion (someone I knew to be new) and it was as if a more established member was saying F off we don't like new people here and can't be bothered to give you the time of day.

I got a job today!! Well sort of..I bought a share in a business so I now work in the Hotel and Leisure industry.

Having a job is good as doing nothing gets really boring. I don't plan on working as such. I just bought a router so I could sit in the bar (with a coke!!) and chat to people here all day, might even attempt a task.

I think that what you are saying is right...if all new users did read at least some of the guidelines their effort would certainly pay dividends for them.

Trolls are another matter and should be immediately reported and then ignored as they will ruin a site with their nastiness if they are allowed.
They are very different from a new user violating guidelines by accident.
Depending on the tags they may not be intended as an annoyance as there are several members who use their own method of tagging which is quite within the legitimate use for tags.

If someone has already made a comment about a violation then I see no need to add another.

MOST new members are genuine new members in my opinion and I can say for sure that I can very easily spot certain people as their IP is linked to them by my computer so it also easily detects people using multple profiles which happens alot.

After I have already given some well intentioned advice to a member who carries on posting certain types of discussions I will just leave my tags on their discussion to remind them.

I said after my first time pointing out the error they have made to them I can get a bit harsh, of course this is usually when they are starting discussion after discussion on the same topic. Like someone said everyone deserve a second change even those that pretend to be new and clueless.

MOST new members lately NOT are genuine new members and some ways to know this have been shared in this discussion already.

well said raz! I'm not skilled enough to spot the return offenders but I do know plagiarism when I see it (sometimes) and referral links are blatantly obvious, one warning should be enough IMO too

They are easiest to spot if you have had contact with them in the past and have tracking code in your profile which records and links IPs.
They hardly ever go to the trouble of using a new IP.

trackers are good but they can be rather faulty at times.

I've got a modified type as it was really for work and tracking online activity but it won't work on this netbook.
Statcounter is what I use on here with a couple of tweaks that my friend did for me. I can't get it into my profile though but I had it on here before.I can't add any content and not just a html code problem which I had hoped but all content.

I was told about trackers, but think I'd rather not know lol ... unless I was being stocked or something nasty, until then (God forbid) I'll do without.

Thats why I gave links to another member as she had a stalker. I heard something went wrong with his connection or pc and he went away. Stalkers can be a real pain in the behind.

Certain things need reporting to keep the site from being ruined by behaviours which are very harmful.
I am really talking about being a bit more friendly to the genuine new members which is important as we would all loose out if there were no new members arriving here.

I think that most people are in agreement about helping the genuine new members. What seems to be the problem is when banned members return with 'new' profiles and start posting links and spamming discussions . They may be seen as new by someone like me who may not have been here long enough to recognise them but seen as a pain by the older members who have seen the same people come and go countless times before. I can see how this would get a bit wearing for the older membrs and possibly make them less willing to waste time with people who really should have read all the guidelines before beginning to write posts.

Luckily there are stil members who are prepared to help the newer people and I appreciate their help as I'm sure many new users do.

I don't think it's intentional to scare the newcomers we like to encourage and welocome them. I've had a spammer post a link in one of my discussions when I was reasonably new to the Lot. I just gave him a friendly caution and then a veteran came along and posted a link to the guidelines. What I'm basically getting at is that I was guilty of only skimming over the guidelines, but the posting of referral links was one thing that stuck in my mind as being very important in the DON'T category. After several mistakes and a couple of deleted discussions I made it my business to re-check the guidelines, I hope all newbies do eventually too, sooner rather than later.

I agree, I don't think there is any intention to scare off new members.
The problem is the constant rule breakers are ruining things for the genuine members.
The make money section really does seem to cause alot of problems for the people posting there.
It is actually one of my least frequented sections here. I used to stay mainly in politics,religion and mylot and had very few problems with spammers.
Now I have made an effort to avoid those areas for a while I get my first spamming friend request!!

There are plenty of people here who will always try and help a newer member if they can.
