Be more friendly to new members. |
|
I have come across a few discussions posted by very new members which are more or less their first attempt at posting a discussion.
A couple of them were breaking the rules in various ways. When I looked at the tags they said things like 'reported' or 'violation' and it did annoy me a little because both discussions had no responses.
A member has taken the time to tag a discussion and report it. Why not leave a brief explanation of the guidelines or a link to them if you are able to post links.
That would be more friendly than reporting someone who may be completely put off the site after their first discussion gets deleted. Couldn't we take the time to help new members and show them that this is a friendly site and well worth being a member of?
Reporting things that break the rules is one thing but surely discretion is called for in certain cases?

22. Opal26 (9787) | 6 months ago | Hey mike, Welcome back! You've made good points as have so many of the others, between all the fun stuff! And it is true that since lately because of some the "problems" here it is sometimes difficult to tell who really is a a newbie I tend to be a little more wary! I don't go for getting a discussion deleted, since I wouldn't want that done to me. I will give advice and hope for the best! I remember how I felt when I first arrived here just a year ago and people were very kind and helpful to me so I feel the need to return the favor and hope that I don't get screwed in the end! In other words, I take a chance that I'm not dealing with a troll when I go out on a limb to help someone!

mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | Exactly the same as I feel. It is worth giving someone the benefit of the doubt if you are unsure as you lose little if they turn out to be a trouble maker but gain alot if they turn out to be genuine.

23. mrnowrench (251) | 6 months ago | I did briefly go over the TOS and I try to adhere to the rules as best I can. I know that I want to a helpful and contributing member. Maybe there should be some did you know tips that come up when you first post. Like back in the day when you had the little Microsoft assistant come up and help you until you got on your feet. Or how about a mentoring program whereas someone meets and greets you. Shows you around so to speak. Or perhaps a little test to make sure that the NEW member understands what is and isn't acceptable. And you know what would be great is for someone to come along and say Hello welcome to Mylot. I joined 3 weeks ago and so far not one single person has greeted or said "Hello". Really sad if you ask me! But what do I know I'm new!

mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | Welcome to Mylot!!! I'm sure someone would have got round to greeting you soon. If you do want any help just ask...there are plenty of people to ask but just make sure you are given the right information. The ideas you mention are pretty good. There is nothing official but just add a few people as friends and they will give you a hand.

pmbhuntress (699) | 6 months ago | Welcome Mrnowrench. I know that Mike can most likely give you a few pointers where needed. They dont have people that are really suppose to help us in here. Its one of those things where we are alone, and have to learn it on our own. That is one reason why I prefer to take some hints from folks that know what they are talking about. Just be careful not to put up any referral links, or not to really post in any place with links in it. If you do those replies all get deleted sooner or later. Watch out for the occasional person that wants to be a friend that will spam you, if they spam me once I just delete them from my friends list. No warning no nothing. And always just read through some of the other folks replies so you sort of know what your reply should be like.

24. strawberrychocodahi (2473) | 6 months ago | Ignorance of the law excuses no one. But i do am mindful for some newbies here unlike this one particular guy who keeps on creating the same topic for five times and he just keeps on doing it even if I already said that it is against Mylot rules to post the same topic (word for word).
I think some newbies are sorry if they posted some topics that violated Mylot. But there are some annoying one, which I may have called a troll that keeps on spamming here on Mylot.
Before I joined Mylot, I read the FAQ and their TOS. Some of the information, I learned from asking senior members about Do's and Don't. I am ready to help other members here if possible. But if they themselves don't want my help, I don't push it . I will report anyone, who keeps on posting rubbish things even if I already warned them and yet they keep on doing it. It is my way also of helping Mylot.

|
|
mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | New members should read the rules and some are really annoying when they don't accept a very friendly word of help. When that occasionally happens I just leave them to it as I won't waste my time with those people. Once a member has been made aware of their error but continues what they were doing then I have no sympathy when someone reports them. Mylot actually encourage us to help new members but also to report violations that damage the integrity of the site.
| |
|
|
mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | With regard to posting the same topic it is against the rules even if the words are changed. This is just creating a problem as members will be responding to a discussion that will more than likely get deleted. Spammers should be reported as should trolls as they are bad for everyone here.

25. GardenGerty (20272) | 6 months ago | When people are new to the site, there is an awful lot to bear in mind from the TOS and FAQ section. I think I can spot a genuine mistake as opposed to a recycled abuser.I will report someone if I have warned them a few times but usually I just make a suggestion of how to the discussion in a better way so it is a legitimate discussion. Sometimes I lose points over it, but who cares. This is about more than points and earnings it is about getting along.
| |
| |
|
|
mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | You are very right and I agree. It is about far more than points and a few cents. Be friendly to others, unless they are blatant trolls or trouble makers, and it will spread and the site will just be better for it. What is the actual point of being nasty? Lets all just make a bit of effort and have a little more tolerance.

26. MNRFOLEY (188) | 6 months ago | I very much agree with you. I have come accross new members who had posted something that violates TOS, I didnt report him because I understand that he is new and needed to be advised. It is really unfair to the new members if they will just be banned from the site for one instant of violation no one is perfect and by pointing out to them to read the TOS will be a great help.Yes I hope the old members will be more friendly and more helpful to the new ones. I f they do it more than ones then that's the time to take action.

mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | Sometimes when I have given someone a hand they will often send a friend request which I always accept. This helps me out as you can't really have too many friends here as long as we turn the notifiers off!!
People wouldn't get banned for one thing they would have to repeatedly break the rules. I posted discussion after discussion breaking the rules but I didn't learn so I got banned. Don't plan on it happening again.

27. megaalgos (141) | 6 months ago | Yeah, I agree with you... some people don't read the rules and break them. I am not new just not to active, but I try to get on every moment I can. I guess my life is to busy. But anyways the people that are really new we need to be nice and friendly like you said.

mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | They either don't read the rules and break them through not knowing or they don't actually fully understand some of the guidelines as they are a little vague in places.
I do see that there are some users who are here purely to promote other sites and generally not contribute anything worthwhile here. I fully support the members who report these people as it is doing us all a service.

However if I do answer a newbie who has some mistakes I explain what they are doing wrong but I must admit it kind of irks me that they have not taken the time to read and acquaint themselves of the guidelines.

mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | I am having a break from posting discussions as I have not been putting in the effort to respond to my friends discussions lately as I have been posting on my own discussions. I alternate between friends started, new, new user and no responses. I like helping new users for some reason, I don't really know why. I suppose it is because I get a certain sense of satisfaction and a nice feeling as I have been helpful. It is possibly to counteract by bad moments on here as balance in life is very important!!!

30. tattylashes (4295) | 6 months ago | well i have been here for a while and i still get tags like that, some people would sooner hide behind their screens than actually say something, i politely tell the writer that they have violated this or that, they will learn from this but i would never just report someone for reporting sake, that's sneaky and sly.
| |
| |
|
|
mike197601 (2831) | 6 months ago | Why not leave a comment? A tag takes nearly as much time and is counterproductive IMO. It has happened to me and I just thought rude person for doing that. I don't like sly types and greatly prefer being told straight even if it is not good news!
| |
|
|
tattylashes (4295) | 6 months ago | yes i agree mike, i would prefer to be told than have someone sneak behind my back and do it underhand, i like people to be honest with my no matter how good or bad it is....some people just don't have the guts to speak up and tell us how it is.
