Be more friendly to new members. |
|
I have come across a few discussions posted by very new members which are more or less their first attempt at posting a discussion.
A couple of them were breaking the rules in various ways. When I looked at the tags they said things like 'reported' or 'violation' and it did annoy me a little because both discussions had no responses.
A member has taken the time to tag a discussion and report it. Why not leave a brief explanation of the guidelines or a link to them if you are able to post links.
That would be more friendly than reporting someone who may be completely put off the site after their first discussion gets deleted. Couldn't we take the time to help new members and show them that this is a friendly site and well worth being a member of?
Reporting things that break the rules is one thing but surely discretion is called for in certain cases?

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | I don't really know when we would no longer see ourselves as new. Maybe after 100 posts...a 1000,maybe it's a time thing rather than a post count..who knows?
I am not familiar with every rule but did read through all the regulations again earlier to refresh myself.
There are actually quite a few that I had forgotten.

Because I was intending this response as sarcasm...only sometimes sarcasm fails miserably here, if ya know what I mean.

robert67 (1344) | 6 months ago | it was an attempt at "counter sarcasm" and no offence was intended.

33. lumenmom (868) | 6 months ago | It is a good idea to help the new people who may not realize they are doing something in violation of the rules. Most people say you should read the terms and yes that is true but the fact is you can read and read till your face turns blue and still not find every single rule that applies to posting. Most people who are new are so excited to find such a sute where they can voice their opinions they just start posting out of human nature, not out of a desire to go breaking all the rules. Those who report them without even letting them know what they did wrong are not very empathetic and may have forgotten where they came from. They were new at one time and did not know all the rules either.

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | I agree, I read the discussion guidelines when I became a member and still managed to violate most of them without even noticing. They are open to interpretation in many areas and my view of the rules was slightly different to mylots view!! We were all new once and we have all probably been helped by other members so we should try and pass on our experience to newer members.

34. o0jopak0o (302) | 6 months ago | well been a active member less than a month. And for my first post i was flamed because of some conflicting opinion on the topic. i know that forums like this one can get a heated discussion but it was my first to to get flamed on my first post.
Some people really don't know how to say things politely

pmbhuntress (699) | 6 months ago | Awe you poor thing, Some folks can just be so mean and rotten. I have seen a few folks in here that use to be that way, they wouldnt even try and be nice. Everyone should have there own opinion. It is a free world, and I think mylot wants us to have our own opinions.

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | Some topics generate alot of heat. A newer member posting in certain sections could well get a rough time on a sensitive subject. I would leave those subjects alone as a very new member and wait until I had more experience here before venturing into hostile territory!!
I am a coward though!!!

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | I remember your discussion!!
In my drunken state I nearly went all over it commenting on all your responses as there were some that were begging to be commented on in a special way!!
Luckily I didn't as you wouldn't be saying such nice things to me now!!
I'm going back to have a look at that discussion now as I found it highly entertaining.
Post another one soon please!!!!!:)

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | I suppose it comes down to what we feel is the right thing to do. I don't like reporting things but do see that sometimes there is a need to report a member for certain violations.
Some people just have a lower reporting threshold than others!!

37. tjburcham (289) | 6 months ago | I haven't posted anything. Alittle unsure of the rules myself. I do agree, it you take the time to read an article leave a comment, help someone out. I don't have time to see if someone is breaking the rules and most of the time don't care that they are.

mike197601 (2761) | 6 months ago | Try and watch out for people copying other members discussions, adding content as their own original work when it obviously isn't,trolls who deliberately set out to cause trouble and spammers as these are the most harmful things in my opinion.
I would report these types of activities without question but leave the other minor stuff alone. That is only my opinion and how I look at things and realise other members will have a different view of rule breaking and how to deal with it.

| 38. Hurray (59) | 6 months ago | Hello Mike;
I agree. Took me a while and I am still not at ease with the site. Giving them a link to a FAQ or the like and kind of translate, summarize the point would be helpfull I'm sure to non-English speaking new members.
I would say three friendly reminders of the sort could be a standard. Then, maybe a temporary suspension while they get through reading and understanding the rules at which point an administrator could check on their re-entry based on their understanding of the rules.
There is but just a small minority who truly is troublesome really.
Best, Hurray

I think a friendly attitude to anyone who is new or not is a possitive way to get along with others. ... What else can I do here? It's completely new to me. Thank you if anyone can help me.
