Be more friendly to new members. |
|
I have come across a few discussions posted by very new members which are more or less their first attempt at posting a discussion.
A couple of them were breaking the rules in various ways. When I looked at the tags they said things like 'reported' or 'violation' and it did annoy me a little because both discussions had no responses.
A member has taken the time to tag a discussion and report it. Why not leave a brief explanation of the guidelines or a link to them if you are able to post links.
That would be more friendly than reporting someone who may be completely put off the site after their first discussion gets deleted. Couldn't we take the time to help new members and show them that this is a friendly site and well worth being a member of?
Reporting things that break the rules is one thing but surely discretion is called for in certain cases?

41. dawnald (10051) | 6 months ago | If I see a violation and it's a newbie I generally say something. If they're not new, I ignore it. But I know people who DO report violations and they are well within their rights to do so. I don't want to scare people off the site myself. Who knows, I might miss out on a really great friendship.

42. LilyLoretta (952) | 6 months ago | Yeah, discretion probably is called for in some cases, but new members should be reading the Guidelines and Terms of their own accord before they start posting.
It's their own fault if they choose to just assume they can guess the rules of myLot, there's no excuse really.

If someone doesn't know something we must help him, and explain him what is wrong and what is right. An aggressive way of behaving won't help in any way... If the users are more friendly each to other that will help in many ways for the discussions. If everyone behave friendly our time here will be much more happily spend.

mike197601 (2867) | 6 months ago | Being nasty to people really isn't good if the other person is a new or more established member. We should be friendly and respectful of every member no matter their status here. Being nice to new members is especially important as it gives the right impression of the site to new people. If I was a new member and was met with hostility on a site I probably wouldn't bother going back. We all benefit from good new members as it is important to the site to attract new people.

| em1n3mka (21) | 5 months ago | Yeah, your comment is really right and I think that everybody must be nice and friendly to new people because if you act bad, they won't come ever again... So I think this is really important. It looks like my opinion is like yours.

| 46. ninajohnson (25) | 6 months ago | This just reminds me of people who call the police when their neighbors are being too loud instead of just knocking on the door and asking them to be quiet! I once went to my friends house for dinner on a sunday evening; around 4 or 5 o'clock...all of a sudden there's a knock on the door and it's a police officer who said he had received a noise complaint. There were only 3 of us over there and it was not even close to being late; and to my recollection we weren't even drinking (which always raises my voice a few levels). Point being, had the neighbor just come over and said "hey, I work nights and I need to sleep right now" or whatever the excuse was, we would have been a lot more receptive. I think that is common courtesy.

47. owlwings (5261) | 6 months ago | I agree with you, to a point, Mike. Some people come here with little English and try their best to post what they hope will make a discussion. They are the honest ones who come to try it out because (perhaps) they have been told that you can make money at it. Those I would always try to give leeway to and, perhaps, remind politely that the 'rules' forbid the kind of post they are making.
The ones that I have learned to report and never to respond to are those whose first post is something like 'Join this as my referral' or other such advertising things (often with email addresses and phone numbers). When I report I always tag the discussion with a brief description of the violation and 'reported', so that others know that it's a discussion that is likely to be removed.
Anybody who has been around forums at all (and most of those who set out to blatantly advertise have been) will be well aware that most forums have specific rules against advertising for referrals. MyLot is no exception and anyone who joins here should understand that. When one joins MyLot one is asked to check a box to say that one has read the Terms and Conditions (which includes the Guidelines). Those who don't are usually warned very early on (and are generally apologetic) or are quite obviously ignoring and flaunting the rules.
You should not be annoyed if you see 'reported' as a tag. It is up to MyLot to decide whather a discussion should be deleted or not but it is (as stated in the Guidelines) up to the members to report any infractions. As a member, I see it as my duty to report any discussions I come across that seem to be not what MyLot define as a 'discussion'. It is not really my duty to inform people (though I readily do so when it seems appropriate) because they SHOULD have already be acquainted with the rules.
There are two classes of people who make themselves known when one does point out the error. There are those who apologise profusely and want to know how to delete discussions and there are those who adamantly profess to have done nothing wrong. It is just not worth getting into an argument with the latter kind, so it is better simply to report and say nothing.

mike197601 (2867) | 6 months ago | I agree that there are certain times when reporting a discussion is necessary. The only thing I would say is that it takes very little time to leave a brief explanation of why the discussion breaks the rules. I agree that the members should have read the guidelines before they start. Sometimes the members with limited English may not understand them and this is where I would especially like to see more help given to these people by more established members. It is right that we are encouraged to help the site maintain its integrity as without it we wouldn't have this site as it would have to shut down.

mike197601 (2867) | 6 months ago | I can understand some members reasons for reporting certain discussions and agree with them. Mylot do encourage us to help them keep the site clean and I can see why this is a good thing for us to do. I just think that sometimes an explanation is a little more friendly than just leaving a tag.

49. arkaf61 (5728) | 6 months ago | I completely agree with you. I might have broken a few rules myself when I started here. And I read the guidelines! I have this huge problem with the mightier than thou attitude we find here. We're all here for a number of reasons that is shared, and we all started at some point, maybe making a few mistakes here and there. As long as I can see a person is going trough first steps here in myLot, and trying, I will be tolerant. I am actually very selective of what I report and I report seldom. Like to save the big guns for when they really are needed.

arkaf61 (5728) | 6 months ago | Yes, it seems to have been busy here lately - again. SOme people just don't know what to do with their time.ANd can't enjoy it unless they're creating some sort of problem to others. They don't even realize that they're breaking a bunch of guidelines as well, when they should know better. I stay clear. Plenty of good stuff in here without the drama LOL
