I think because it is unexpected. We think of bad guys as being scary ugly monsters and the good guys as being handsome. In this case they switched it. It teaches us to not judge a book by its cover.

Hi howardskip,it seems that you actually liked shrek,I think people generally expect a good looking superstar to be the hero or a macho animated character as well,but using shrek as a protagonist was a bet for the producers and its success proved that it really does not matter on the looks of the hero but the touching story of a film that makes a film a hit.

It's just that they thought of doing something different..

I don't know! and I don't care! (lol) I think the movie was great especially Puss in Boots.

guess they just want a different approach towards ogres since ogres tend to be portrayed as bad characters most of the time. yeah, it was the first time i saw a wholesome image of an ogre, and a comedian at that! LOL^_^

i think shrek changed a lot since meeting lots of kind friends, especially donkey and the princess. dont you think so?^_^

I think its because he is the anti hero. He is stereotyped as being this horrid monster when really he has a gentle heart, but chooses to be this way because thats how he is viewed upon by the village.
