United States! Do You Purchase Private Health Insurance?

I don't purchase health insurance since my employer is paying for most of it. I'm please with it so far. Not too fussy and the doctor is definitely better than my other doctor.

My grand parents are not US Citizens yet - they are green card holders, however. Their health insurance is actually with the state called MediCAL. And as far as I know - it's better than anything they've had! I can tell too! Because my grandmother had really bad diabetes when she was in the Philippines. For the first year that she was here, the doctor had her on insulin. Now she's not on insulin anymore, and on regular diet. MediCAL is great!

So my state already have "universal insurance" - that's why I don't think Mr. President should enforce HIS universal insurance. He should enforce it to states - and require them to have insurance for their constituents. I don't mind if he gives them a leg up with the stimulus money! But make the local people pay for their insurance through taxes or whatever.

No, I do not. I have it through my work.
I wish I could help you to decide. I believe that differant companies would cater to different needs. I.e. If you have a family with young kids you would go with a more comprehensive plan as opposed to if there are 2 of you in fairly good health.

One thing that you may do is look at the different plans. See how much you would save by removing some of the "extras". In order to cover for those areas take how much you would save and invest that amount in a Money Market or something similar that gains you a little but is easy to access in case of emergency.

My employer doesn't provide it and I can't afford it...so if I have health problems, I'm just pretty much screwed.

I have not but I have consider it for Frank for sometime.

There was a point in time that I needed to purchase health insurance. I shopped around and the deductibles were outrageous. The ones that I could afford, really didn't pay much, so even with insurance I would have avoided going to the doctor asap. I decided at those prices I would pass after all I was single and had no children. I went for a couple years without health insurance, and without seeing a doctor. Now that I am a parent I know that going without health insurance is out of the question. Thankfully my husband's work provides UHC for the employees. Even so we have to pay 4000 dollars out of pocket each year before they pay anything. That is a lot of money, and yet we make it every year. Once we hit 4000 everything else is paid in full.

I haven't been in this boat. My brother-in-law is a contractor and he uses Kaiser. He's quite happy with it. I wouldn't like it because I wouldn't be able to choose any doctor I want.
