what a friend just emailed me, I have not researched it to see if it is "REAL", "LEGIT" you know but I'm really curious so any of you that live there I'd love to hear from you here is what she sent me in the email; Subject: Beginning July 1, 2009 Just in case you go to Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. One mile per hour over the speed limit and the machine will get you a nice $375.00 ticket in the mail. Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense.=2 0 The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates. This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement. The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. Pass this on to everyone you know who might be affected!!! That's some major MU-LAH there you know? I don't think I'll be driving through there anytime soon but if this is "real" and in this state I wonder how many others will soon be following it? I mean come on to be fined that much for a MILE over the speed limit?? That's crap!!! So what do you think huh?? Real??? Crazy?? Stupid?? where does it end huh??

I will be real interested in knowing about this also. Not for myself but for my son in law. He has to be there on the 13th to start work and I would like to let him know ahead of time.

People don't slow down in work zones - they don't. They've run road workers over by actually driving on the other side of the cones, so I don't blame them for wanting to deter speeding, but I also see it as another revenue source they've discovered since few, if any, people drive the proper speed limit in a work zone. So, they're going to take advantage and pad the till. They're doing it all over. The thing is, lots of times, the work zone is worker free, but the penalties still apply! Here, the normal fines are doubled in a work zone, even if there's no one working!!

Hey Jerz; I know what you mean and are saying, I don't get out and about like I used too but when I was traveling around I was amazed at how crazy fast they drove like around in St. Louis in those work zones, there is ALWAYS a work zone on the interstates there... I can see it but for heavens sakes; Hell these days the police, STate patrol ain't none of them safe when they have someone pulled off the road on the shoulders Iv'e seen countless vidoes of them being hit or some drunken idiot slamming into the pulled over cars, its scary, really scary; I try to drive very slowly in those places the work zones, or when I see someone, ANYONE pulled over on the side of the road, but that ONE MILE thing is a bit steep I don't know I would just roll over and die...I couldn't come up with that kind of dough you know? do they have that In Jersey? I've not looked to see if its even here?? It just came to me in the email today... WOW!

You lost me. What came in the mail? And does Jersey have what? Photo tickets? I think so in some cities up north. I know they do in Philly on Roosevelt Blvd. It's 8 or 10 lanes wide and people used to race up and down and completely ignore the lights. Pedestrians were killed almost every day, accidents every other day. Once they installed them, the problem dropped dramatically. Didn't completely disappear, but once people started getting tickets, they no longer thought they could get away with it. Pedestrians killed and drivers would take off never to be found. It was insane!! So, there are benefits to it. But, that one mile an hour crap is just that - crap. Not all speedometers are on the money. Again - it's purely revenue if they're starting at one mile an hour over.

Ouch!! That is an expensive ticket. My mom got a red light ticket from a camera, she had to pay $90. They even had the video online, sure enough it was her. My uncle got a red light ticket in California, it cost him close to $400. We have lots of red light and speeding cameras, some people want them taken out. I'm glad that I am not in Illinois.

Hi Polly: Oh your Poor Mom, that's awful! And your Uncle had a $400.00 fine, I could never come up with that kind of dough I'd just have to sit in jail or something that's REALLY AWFUL!!! Surround towns/cities near me are installing more and more of them and lucky me I have to drive to Columbia on MOnday and they have quite a few of them now over there I will have to pray and be extra extra careful cause I for sure don't have that kind of money damn scary!

Wow! That's a lot of money! But it is very important to drive carefully in work zones. There are plenty of people who don't. I wonder if a lot of people from Illinois speed a lot. Being fine for going a mile over the speed limit is kind of crazy. Maybe they won't actually do this. It's possibly they are saying this to deter people from speeding even the slightest amount over the speed limit. A few years ago, my grandpa had recently bought a car from my aunt. Well he drove it in another state (can't remember where). A little while after he got back home my aunt got a picture in the mail of the car going through a light. Well it was the car she sold to my grandpa! The name on the title wasn't fully transferred over or something so she got the notice in mail. I can't remember if there was a fine though. The mailing may have just been a warning.
