Mark Sanford - What Can He Do NOW? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics6 months ago

I know this story seems to have been hashed and rehashed to the point where there really isn't much left to say but I've been trying to unravel the whole thing and try to make some sense of it. Let's review the whole sorry soap opera, or should I call it a "love story" as Sanford himself called it...

It was about a week or so ago that it was first reported that Governor Mark Sanford of south Carolina had been missing since the previous Thursday. He hadn't seen his four young sons on Father's Day and his wife, Jenny Sanford, told reporters she hadn't seen or heard from him and didn't know where he was. Neither the S.C. Lt. Governor nor Sanford's staff knew where he was or how to contact him in an emergency or disaster. He had, for all intents and purposes, abandoned his job, his state and his constituents.

Soon it was reported that he'd gone hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Apparently he was really stressed out following his difficult budget battle with the S.C. legislature as he fought to refuse the federal stimulus money. It was announced he'd be returning the next day, if I remember correctly. Only problem was, a reporter happened to catch him at the Atlanta Airport as he arrived back from Argentina. OOPS!! Then came the shocking announcement/confession about his affair with a woman from Argentina who had been a friend for eight years but a lover for only a year. Then it got REALLY interesting...

Turns out the State had received emails that had been passed between Sanford and his mistress. Here's a sample - enjoy, or if you're like me, grab a barf bag:

http://www.thestate.com/sanford/story/839350.html

You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that is so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificently gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curves of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light — but hey, that would be going into the sexual details we spoke of at the steakhouse at dinner — and unlike you I would never do that!
(End of excerpt)

Then came his AP interview where he shows absolutely no respect for the wife who acted with such class and dignity throughout this saga. Here's a few excerpts from the interview which was where he said it wasn't an affair but more of a love story, a tragic one...

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=7966772&page=1

Sanford also told the AP he "crossed lines" with women other than his mistress but never had sex with them, adding that he "let his guard down" with some physical contact. He said Chapur is his soul mate, but he will try to fall back in love with his wife, Jenny Sanford.

************************

When Jenny Sanford, his wife of 20 years, discovered the affair, the two went into counseling and went with a spiritual adviser to New York to break off the extramarital relationship, he said.

Jenny had said she was willing to forgive her husband if he stopped his relationship with Chapur.

But Sanford flew to Buenos Aires a week and a half ago to see his mistress without telling his family, friends, security detail or staff, instead telling them he planned to go hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Jenny Sanford said she was devastated when she found out about her husband's secret trip.

"He was told in no uncertain terms not to see her," she told The Associated Press Saturday. "I was hoping he was on the Appalachian Trail. But I was not worried about his safety. I was hoping he was doing some real soul searching somewhere and devastated to find out it was Argentina. It's tragic."
(End of excerpts)

Now there are many calls for his resignation, most from his own party. There will be investigations to see how much state money had possibly been used for Sanford's pleasure trips. He had agreed to release his financial records but later changed his mind:

http://www.wmbfnews.com/Global/story.asp?S=10627517

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has backed out of a promise to release personal financial records proving he did not use state money for trips to see his mistress.

A day after Sanford declared in an emotional Associated Press interview that his mistress is his soul mate, spokesman Joel Sawyer says the governor does not want to discuss personal matters in the media anymore. The state is investigating Sanford's travel to see the Argentine woman the governor identified as his lover.

Sanford agreed this week to provide the AP with proof of his payment for trips to New York and Argentina to see her.

His staff first said the records might be made available Tuesday, and then the governor's spokesman said Wednesday Sanford would not release them.
(End of excerpt)

Wow, "the governor doesn't want to discuss personal matters in the media anymore." Why didn't he decide that before he gave us far more information than most of us cared to have...lol?

Can this marriage - OR this career be saved?

Neither can in my opinion, god I must admit I didn't even read the whole thing because after four "glorious"'s, I was already gagging. This guy is such a jerk and its like oh yes, who are you more likely to have some blue sky "oh shes my soulmate image" over, the woman who you really have no commitment to, or the woman you are married to and have a responsibility with.

Please .... no more. I can't stand this man. What in the world did his wife ever see in him in the first place? Ooh, I can't find anything admirable about him. And she had four children with this jerk? Sorry, but it makes me question her judgement. Bleck!

Oh my, shockingly we agree! LOL

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Double shockingly from me, too! The sad part is apparently Jenny is an heiress and she helped launch his career from what I've recently read. In other words, the scumbag used her! In her defense, piasabird, judgment sometimes has little to do with who one falls in love with. Since she seems to be an intelligent woman I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume there was something there at one time. Granted, I have no idea WHAT and I think it's long gone now but there was something there LONG ago.

Ladies! Please! What did you think? That I would blindly try to defend him because he's a Republican and I am a Republican? I mean, there is no way I can defend this person. He is just so wrong.

He says this other woman is his "soul mate" and he will "try" to fall back in love with his wife? Come on! If I hear any more about this sorry a**ed man I think I might throw up!

Why don't some people know when to shut up?!!

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

I think we've reached a consensus that we all want to throw up when we hear or see him! They just said on the news that Jenny has released a statement saying she's "willing to forgive him". Why, Jenny, WHY???

LOL The only thing missing is him sleeping with his wife's sister and some long lost children for it to be called "As the Governor Turns". I personally would have told him to hit the road when he didn't see his kids on Father's Day. I would have been throwing his shyt in the trash when I heard the words soulmate, and fell out of love with his wife.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Those were the words that clinched it for me as well. I'm going to start a discussion about who should star in the movie. "As the Governor Turns" might be a good title.

I wish these guys would just go the hell away after they screw up like this.

I'm a big supporter of hearing guys like Cheney and Bush speaking after the fact, although many disagree with them and wish they'd go away. The reason I don't mind that is because they're just giving their side of a story that a lot of us, even though we like to pretend otherwise, aren't even close to comprehending. But in a case like we see with Sanford, knowing the end result has preemptively nullified any saving grace.

He's a cheat. The more details that are released suggest he's been a cheat.

There's something deeply embedded in a politician like Sanford that makes them think they're a lot more charming and convincing than they are. It's pure vanity. Vanity isn't exclusive to any particular "side"; it's a flaw of humans in general, and something we see in a lot of politicians. Some would be understandable. After all, you have to be vain to a certain level to want to be in control of something. But vanity to the point of shamelessness is embarrassing.

The best thing he can do now is step down, work to create some type of privacy in his life, and stay far away from the political arena.

I don't mind if a full investigation happens to determine if he spent taxpayer dollars, but I don't think we need Sanford around for that.

We're at a funny point in America: politicians need to be trusted more than ever, but they're habitually proving--right or left--that they cannot be trusted. The more they stick around for self-vindication, the worse they muddy up everyone else's name.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

You know, I've been watching this story as it's developed and I keep asking myself these questions - WHAT was it about him to make people vote for him to begin with? HOW could he have been considered a Presidential contender? I really don't see any ";charisma" there which leads to another question - what did either Jenny or Maria, not to mention the other women he "crossed the line" with without crossing "the ultimate line" ever see in him to being with???

Personally if is was me as the wife I would have no interested whatsoever in even trying to save this non-marriage. He proved himself to be no more than another scumbag politician. I did not think he could sink any lower in my estimation until I heard him say just yesterday the his mistress was his "soul-mate" and the he would TRY TO LOVE HIS WIFE AGAIN?????!!!! How friggin' noble of him!!

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

"How friggin' noble of him" indeed! I'd say he's proven himself to be even lower than the typical scumbag politician. At least most of them try to show some respect and remorse towards their wives when they speak publicly or to the media. This a-hole seems to feel that he was somehow entitled to this "tragic love story".

What can he do now?He can resign, move out and go live in Argentina with his "soul mate", thats what he can do. The man cheated on his wife, multiple times with multiple women apparently, and seemingly on the ytax payers dollar a few times too. I don't usualy call for this but Sanford, time ta go buddy, ya fukked up big time.

"State Law Enforcement Division chief Reggie Lloyd said investigators reviewed records of two trips to Argentina and three to New York City...Mr. Lloyd said his investigation showed that the New York and Argentina trips, including the 2008 Buenos Aires leg, were for legitimate state business or paid for on Mr. Sanford's personal credit card. State officials, including the governor, are entitled to free time even on state-sponsored trips, Mr. Lloyd said."

He didn't see his mistress at the taxpayers' expense. So, the only reason for him to resign is that he cheated on his wife. If that makes a politician unsuited to public office, we have a lot more people to fire.

His marriage...I doubt that and if I were Jenny, I'd give him the permanent boot. His career...he may be able to resurface one day but he needs to go away for awhile. Look at Marion Barry of Washington, D.C. He was busted with cocaine when he was Mayor, went to jail and managed to eventually revive his political career.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Good point, Spall, but I have a feeling the people of South Carolina may be less forgiving than those of D.C. Of course, he could always relocate...I'll chip in for a one-way ticket to Argentina for him.
Annie

8. Apple1 (95)   ranked 800 out of 6,346 in politics   6 months ago

By now, South Carolina probably wants him to go away. So why doesn't he just do that? As for his marriage, I think his wife is smart enough to give up the ghost.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Yep, it sure does appear that South Carolina wants him out! I agree about his marriage as well. How can a husband have an affair and then agree to counseling and then at that counseling ask his wife if he can go see his mistress? Then, AFTER the wife adamantly says "NO WAY!" he does it ANYWAY? Lastly, he tells the whole world that his mistress is his soul mate, that he still loves her but that he's "trying to fall back in love with his wife". I'd tell him not to bother.
Annie

9. myLot reputation of 79/100. Rollo1 (1593)   ranked 89 out of 6,346 in politics   6 months ago

It can't really be more information than we cared to have, since we're still talking about it, even writing long discussions with a blow-by-blow description.

Can his marriage be saved? That's really none of our business. It really only matters to him and his wife and it's their decision.

If we really didn't want to know what he wrote to his paramour, we wouldn't put a link in so everyone could go read it. What business is it of this site to have his personal emails? Doesn't invasion of privacy mean anything to anyone? Or is it okay if it's juicy enough and invading the privacy of a political figure? I don't buy the "public figure" excuse. Even public figures are allowed private lives, otherwise we'd all have a radio tuned to hear the pillow talk of President and Mrs. Obama.

There are lots of people with messy marriages, divorces, liaisons and dalliances. Many of them are here at mylot and write about them, asking advice. But that's a screen name they're giving. How would anyone here feel if someone hacked or stole their private emails and published them? How many of us would feel it was okay to publish our love letters? Would anyone else reading them think they were romantic, or would they giggle at us?

Whether he has a future in politics or as governor is really up to the citizens of South Carolina.

Why has he continued to go to the media and tell them more and more details? Trying to head off any further salacious headlines by coming clean completely? Who knows? Whether he tells all or the media continue to dig until they tell all, it's not going to be any easier on the family.

Maybe we'll know more when they hack his email account again and publish more of his personal correspondence. Heck, maybe they can set up surveillance cameras so we can watch.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

I guess you got me, Rollo1! We don't have the right to know any of the personal details of anyone's life other than our own and that applies to politicians as well as to our next door neighbors. However, while Sanford was pretty much forced to confess to his infidelity since the emails were already about to be published the further details that he gave voluntarily are things none of us could have possible known without him telling us. It was wrong for the personal emails between Sanford and Maria to have been hacked into and then made public but Sanford didn't have to tell the world that Maria is his soul mate or that he'd crossed the line with other women, at least not YET. He sure didn't have to say he's trying to fall back in love with his wife. At least for now nobody can hack into our private thoughts!
Annie

myLot reputation of 79/100. Rollo1 (1593)   ranked 89 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Does Sanford really need to tell us all these details? Probably not. If he waits long enough, the news media will tell us after they've spent some time digging around and interviewing people, hacking his IM accounts, etc. Then they certainly would know about other women with whom he had crossed the line and well, so would we.

I think we'd know all this eventually anyway. Now that it's all been said, it just prevents it coming out one salacious headline at a time.

10. myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1908)   ranked 60 out of 6,346 in politics   6 months ago

The case suffers from TMI. (too much information) thanks to Sanford. I really don't know why the man can't just shut up. We don't need to hear that his mistress is his "soul mate" and all the rest of it.

As for being able to save his career or his marriage. Neither. He will end up loosing his job. She will end up divorcing him. She is a strong independent woman. She will stand up for herself and her children.

I just heard this morning that Sanford is getting a book deal. So I guess next year we will able to able to pick up a tell all book about the whole thing. Not that I am going to read it. But I am sure Sanford got a multi million dollar deal so he may loose his political career but he will be rich. Which is good for him sence in the divorce he is probly going to loose it all because it was his wife's money to begin with. She was the rich one not him.

At this point I just want him gone. This state is done with him. The citizens are not only calling for demanding he resign. Sence it looks like he is not going to. The citizens have now started demanding that the state house impeach him.
His days are numbered as gov. of this great state.

myLot reputation of 61/100. matersfish (813)   ranked 985 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

A book deal! Jeez. No shame at all!

It's a crying shame we have no real way of weeding these suckers out before they do this kind of thing.

The day the logical world ended was the day popularity promoted power.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9211)   ranked 379 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

I thought I heard somebody mention a book deal on TV last night but I didn't know if they were serious or not. I've been wondering who will play him in the movie. Any suggestions?

Lil, I've been really interested in what you have to say about this since I think you're the only one here I know from S.C. and I realize the rest of us never really get the accurate idea of what is going on somewhere else. You know what I mean, when people go on TV you'll see someone who is loyal to Sanford swearing the people of South Carolina will stand by him because he's been a good governor, etc. then someone who never liked him to begin with will come on and say everyone wants him to go. The political pundits don't usually speak for the average people in any given state or region, I know that from experience with all the talk about my state during the Presidential campaign.

I've got a question just for you, Lil; did anyone have any clue Sanford was like this? I mean, I know he'd been mentioned as a possible contender for the 2012 GOP Presidential nomination and he's been called one of the party's up and coming "stars". Was he that good an actor or was it known closer to home that he wasn't the idealist he seemed to try to appear to be?
Annie

The book is about fiscal conservatism (he recently went to court to try to avoid having the state take stimulus funds) and it's called "Within Our Means". It's not the story of his affair... sorry.

myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1908)   ranked 60 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

no annie. Before this incident Sanford was VERY popular and the majority of people in the state liked him. Even the people that were not happy about him rejecting the stimulus money did not think he would EVER do something like this. This was a HUGE shock to all of us.
The news said this morning that a completely audit has been finished on his spending of state money and he did not illegal spend any o fit.which is good. But he still needs to go. His wife may be willing to forgive him "for the sake of the children" but the people of this state are not willing forgive or forget that he abandoned this state, left the country and left NO ONE in charge. The general population is still screaming for him to resign.

myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1908)   ranked 60 out of 6,346 in politics  6 months ago

Rollo1- Sanford is a good fiscal conservative so a book by him on that subject would not be a bad thing. He has a good grasp on fiscal responsibility. I would be interested in seeing that book.
