What shall I wear to the wedding????? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married6 months ago

I'm in a dilemma. I have three possible dresses to wear to a family wedding on Sunday. I keep trying them on, but I'm not getting any further with deciding. So I'd appreciate any opinions. The dress code is "Lounge Suit". And these are the contenders...

1. A long turquoise silk-look dress. This is fitted at the top, shows a bit of cleavage and has a long flouncy skirt with many petticoats below it. I wore it to my sister's wedding where I was matron of honour. So every time I put it on now I feel like a bridesmaid. (NB I'm not a bridesmaid at this upcoming wedding!) I'm not sure about this dress as it has an old-fashioned look about it which was right for my sister's wedding, which was black tie, and with me being part of the bridal party. My mum loves this dress, and so does my m-i-l. They both think I should wear it and I'm feeling a bit pressurised! w00t

2. A knee-length beige dress with black belt. This dress is fun. It is very fitted up top, it has thin straps and quite a full skirt. My concern here is that it might possibly not be smart enough, and also that it's quite a pale beige. My m-i-l commented after our wedding that one of the guests was wearing white (or almost white), and she was very disapproving about it. And after some internet research, I've found that apparently it is quite rude to wear colours which are similar to white to a wedding, as only the bride is supposed to wear white (or cream or ivory or other similar colours...) confused

3. A pale lilac silk dress. This is calf-length and is quite close fitting. I wore it to a wedding a few years ago when it looked kind of baggy on me, but now I have more curves I think it looks good! It is quite plain, the only decoration being some cut-out flowers and leaves all around the bottom of the dress. I can dress it up with a black belt (from the beige dress), and this adds an extra detail. Again, I'm concerned that it might not be smart enough for the evening reception, (and my mum says that it's too boring!) shocked

So as you can see, I'm a bit confused! I really don't want to spend money on another dress when I have three dresses already... And I'd appreciate any help I can get.

You now in a Delemma, WOW, maybe you could sew some small cloth flowers and some nice lace on to it and wear that.

I'm sure it would look nice.

Never seen a Delemma, but I'm sure they are nice to wear.

HA HA HA,

Now, I know exactly what you're saying, but when you wrote the word 'huff' it made me imagine a great big pink 'puff'y dress. Maybe like a giant pink meringue. That would be nice. lol

Hi liquorice!

I never had you down as a TOG! Beige and lilac? Typical TOG colours and not ones I am going to disapprove of. happy

Sounds to me like you have made your mind up (or your mums have for you) If you don't think the last two are smart enough, then go with number one. I am sure you will look great in it.

Nothing wrong with a bit of cleavage and a flouncy skirt. thumbupdrool

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

What the blazes is a TOG? Sounds interesting! That's the thing, dress number 1. is the one that the mothers approve of, but I don't! But then they're mums (well, grandmas too) with many more years of experience of weddings and dress codes - so do they know best??? blink

Thanks for your comments though. I'll take them into consideration!

myLot reputation of 98/100. Scoop_Dogg (1934)   ranked 45 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

If you don't know what a TOG is, then you are too young to know. wink

Normally reserved for the over forty curmudgeons, like Pikey and myself, a TOG is a follower of Sir Terry Wogan and stands for a Terry's Old Geezer (or Gal). You clearly are not.

I have changed my mind and think maybe No.2 is the choice for you. You want to have fun, so have it in a fun dress and ignore the mums, or suggest they wear it if they like it so much. blink

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

Ah, maybe I'm a bit too young to know what TOG means, but I do love Terry Wogan. thumbup Thanks for your new suggestion, especially telling the mums to wear it themselves, they'll love that, lol!

myLot reputation of 98/100. saw2207 (608)   ranked 347 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

whoa....wait a minute here. . .i am one of that crowd Scoop is referring to but I havent the faintest idea of what a TOG is or who Terry Wogan is .. ..

liquorice . . .go for it. .. sounds like number 2 is the way to go for you .. . Im not really sure what a Lounge Suit is . .but it sounds like any one of the dresses you mentioned definitely fits the occasion..... be daring in this Delemma of yours. . .you only live once . cool

Oh I can definately understand your dilemma!

The lilac dress sounds great but so does the first choice - uhm difficult one this one to choose surrender The final choice must be with the one you feel at your best in.

I hope whichever one you decide on that it will be a lovely day for all concerned and will we see some pics? whistle

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

Yes, thanks, I agree that I should go with what I feel most comfortable. Don't want to feel awkward on the day. It just seems like there's someone I'm going to upset whichever one I wear, lol! rolleyes (And the day's not even about me!! Probably besides myself and the mothers, no-one will even care.. I'm just getting myself into a tizz about it).

Thanks, I think it'll be a fun wedding. The bride and the groom are both very fun people. Not sure yet about pictures, I'll think about it! lol

4. myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (5687)   ranked 22 out of 573 in get married   6 months ago

No 2 sounds the most appropriate and I'm not sure about the light/white thing. Provided that it's not actually white/ivory/cream etc then I would think that you were OK. Accesorise it and add a summer hat, medium heels and you'll look fab and won't be mistaken for the Bride! No 1 sounds like something from the 50s - which is my favourite period for women's fashions. But if it's going to make you feel like a bridesmaid then it has to be a no no.

Funny how it's all men that have responded so far.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (5687)   ranked 22 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

Whoops - nearly all men!

myLot reputation of 98/100. Scoop_Dogg (1934)   ranked 45 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

I don't know about you, Pikey, but I am ALL MAN wink

myLot reputation of 98/100. saw2207 (608)   ranked 347 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

good and quick retraction on that one p1kef1sh . . for mydi is all girl . . and I am right behind her speaking up for the women on the lotrasp

liquorice . .
sounds to me like you arent all that thrilled with choice number one .. and you are considering it out of "mil" pressure . .
choice number 2 sounds like the one you will have the most "fun" in! And to be honest I think that beige is really ok to wear to a wedding. . so is white especially if you plan on wearing a black belt with it . .what bride do you know that would accessorize her wedding gown with a black beltconfused I think that rule in regard to the colors was written by past brides that were upset that someone upstaged them and so they blame it on the color........
choice number 3 sounds also like a good choice . . . if you think it isnt smart enough or like your mom said "boring" why not go out and buy a fabulous new pair of shoes or a new accessory to spice it up a bit. . those new shoes or accessory will probably be something you can use again . .

When all else fails . I say go with YOUR gut as to what is going to make YOU feel pretty and set the stage for YOU to have some real fun for the evening.
Whichever you go with . I hope you have the best time and that you dance the night awaywink

Uhmmmm blink

Thank you Saw! wublol

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

Thanks p1key, no. 2 is my favourite (hmm.. along with no. 3, lol!) Yes, the light/white thing is confusing. I'm going to hopefully go accessory shopping today (if I can drag myself and my 3-year old to the shops in this heat...), and hopefully I'll find some things to make me look fab!

Dress no. 1 is a 50's sort of style. I can appreciate that style, but I'm just not happy with it on me for some reason. The feeling like a bridesmaid thing definitely has something to do with it.

Yes, it did make me chuckle that it's mainly men who responded! Maybe they don't normally get an input into women's dress choices. I'm glad that I'm giving you all the chance to have your say! lolthumbup I do appreciate a male point of view as well as a female one. happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

Scoop Dog, no comment!

Saw, thanks for your lovely detailed answer. Yep, you're right about dress no. 1. I loved it for my sister's wedding, but to me it feels wrong for this one. I agree with what you say about the second dress. And I love your theory about the colour rule! I just really don't want to risk offending anyone (especially the bride - but don't want to ask her because she's really got enough to think about right now - plus I know I'm kind of blowing this out of all proportion really, lol! blush)

And I like your ideas about accessorising the lilac dress. You and P1key are great brains thinking alike. I'm going to hopefully look at a few shops this afternoon and see what I can find. Yep, I need something I'll feel comfortable in, or I'm not going to enjoy myself so much.

I'll let you know what the verdict is next week!

myLot reputation of 98/100. saw2207 (608)   ranked 347 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

well Pi1ke and I do seem to agree . . .except go for a really sexy stiletto heel . .medium heel things sounds a bit too frumpy . .no??? i do like the hat idea though . . no one here ever seems to do up an outfit with a specular hat. .

pics liq. . .after we are are dressing you here . . a picture would be sooooooo amazing to seewink

whatever you do decide to go with . .I just know that you will look GAWJUS!!!!! (that is NY talk for gorgeous;)

if you feel pretty .. just imagine how amazing you are going to look....and dont forget to happy for the camera!!!

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (5687)   ranked 22 out of 573 in get married  6 months ago

I agree Saw. Killer heels would be fantastic. I was just thinking sensibly (for once) and wondering if a lower heel might not be more comfortable. Of course we want to see pictures. But I somehow think we won't. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope so!! LOL.

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

I'll put you all out of your misery, lol! It's taken me ages to reply back to this discussion, so everyone's probably forgotten about this very serious (lolblush) dilemma of mine!!

I decided to wear the lilac dress. In the end I felt happiest wearing that one. And I dressed it up with some sparkly earrings, some high black shoes (and I never usually wear heels, so this was a real change for me!) and the black belt. Thanks for the opinions, they really helped!

If I can find a photo of me that isn't too terrible (hate photos of myself..) then I might post it.

I like the first and third option. I'm just concerned the first may be too formal for a wedding. It sounds very pretty though. The third sounds just right. I would add some bracelets and a necklace to jazz it up a bit. Good luck with your decision.

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Thanks for your reply shar. I didn't wear the first, option, I went for the third, which just made me feel happiest! I added some earrings, some high shoes and a black belt, and it felt right. So I think I made a good decision in the end!

I really love the first dress--it sounds like something out of a fairy tale. I would love wearing it for sometime.:) But, I guess you had better not wear it if you don't feel that good in it. Go in for the second dress. It is not white, so you won't upset the bride. The third dress is too simple for a wedding.

Cheers and happy Mylotting

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Thanks for your opinion. I decided against the second dress as I was just too darned confused about it, lol! I wore the third dress and dressed it up a bit, and felt happier with that option.

The first one is quite a fairytale dress, and I'll hopefully get the chance to wear it again to another (perhaps even more formal) occasion. If you're ever in the area, maybe you could borrow it?! happy

I would suggest that you definitely stay away from the second dress ad rather choose between the first and third. The first one sounds quite good and old-fashioned is not necessarily out of fashion. As for the third dress, if you can find a good piece to put on it (nothing too big but rather eye-catching)I think it won't look boring at all. I still think though that you should wear the one that makes you feel more comfortable and hope you have fun at the wedding!!:D

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Thanks mimuche, that sounds like good advice.

I went for dress 3 in the end. I know that I'm really lucky to have had 3 dresses to choose from, and I feel kind of silly posting about such a "problem"!! blush

I did dress up the lilac dress, with some high-heeled shoes, some sparkly earrings and a belt. I did try going for more of an eye-catching accessory - I bought a big flower to pin on the dress, but it was a bit too elaborate for my tastes in the end and I decided against it. I was happy how I was. I felt comfortable, and the wedding was lovely!

Wear all three? lol, I think I'd have to say that I like the 1st and 3rd one, but not the second one where it's pale beige.

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Good answer! Suffice it to say I didn't wear all three, lol! Although I could have perhaps worn one and changed twice later on. Just like the presenters at awards ceremonies. thumbup

I wore the lilac dress, option 3.

myLot reputation of 99/100. SomeCowgirl (8176)   ranked 3 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Lol, yes presenters and artitsts do change. I guess usually before they perform. Hmm... Glad you decided though and lilac is a pretty color!

Lovely to have 3 choices. I can understand you feeling like a bridesmaid in the turquoise dress. It does sound very "bridesmaidy". The close-fitting lilac dress sounds lovely and not boring at all. If you feel it is a bit plain, you could dress it up with some pretty jewellery and shoes that pick up one of the colours of the hem decoration. Good luck with your decision and have a wonderful time.

myLot reputation of 98/100. liquorice (1747)   ranked 35 out of 573 in get married  5 months ago

Yes, I was very lucky! I did precisely that. Wore the lilac dress and dressed it up a bit with jewellery, belt and shoes. Thanks for helping! And yes, the wedding was lovely and great fun. happy

based on your post and descriptions of the clothes, i think no. 2 will suit you best... no. 1 will be too old-fashioned for you and as you say, it will make you look like a matron of honor... the fact that your mother and m-i-l like it doesn't really matter because you are the one who will be wearing the dress... so you dpn't have to be pressurised by them... about the color, i don't think that there is a restriction on the color of the dress that you can wear to a wedding... so i say go for no. 2 as you say it is fun and add a bit of accessories to it... you will look great in it... have fun on the wedding day... take care and have a nice day...
