Do You Think They Should Release Ronnie Biggs?  email this discussion to a friend?

For those who don't know Ronnie Biggs was one of the great train robbers, they were a gang who robbed the Queens mail train in 1963. The gang were caught and sent to prison but Biggs managed to escape after just one year and skipped to Brazil where he lived his whole life only coming back to the UK a couple of years ago when he got ill. Whilst in Brazil he recorded a song with the sex pistols sticking the finger up at the UK authorities and often claimed to be unrepentant. He's been in prison since he got back he's now 78 and is terminally ill, but our homes secretary has refused to release him. I can understand why as he hasn't served his sentence like all the other robbers have, but on the other hand he poses no risk any more as he can't walk or talk or even feed himself, so it seems pointless to keep him in jail. I don't think he isn't being released on grounds of what risk he now poses to society, instead I think it's for political reasons which seems wrong, as there are criminals who have done far worse things than Ronnie Biggs who have been released long ago. Here's a link to an interesting article on the subject if you'd like to know more:

oh i forgot to add, the driver of the train lost his life as a result of his injuries and the trauma involved in the robbery. his family suffered his loss and his wife lost a husband. a sentence is a sentence no matter how much we might sympathise with him.

I have to say I agree with you he's had years of freedom while all the other served their time, but it must cost more to the taxpayer too as he has to be cared for in prison so it is a tough one to reason. I've only heard the song once it was funny though offensive, didn't they say "God bless Myra Hindley" in it at some point.

I knew that they trian driver was injured but not that he had lost his life. Is this true?

myLot reputation of 99/100. nancyrowina (2228)   ranked 616 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

He didn't die straight away it was couple of years later but it was caused by what happened during the robbery, and apparently the guy was never the same again personality wise it really ruined his life.

Well, if he was released, where would he go? To a nursing home? Pretty much the same fate, I'd think, just a different institution. With all the horror stories that crop up in regards to nursing homes, he's getting no less care in prison. And he returned to Britain, knowing he would have to go to jail, because he wanted the health care he would get there instead of the health care he'd get in Brazil.

He does have family I think they were going to care for him, but you're right he's still going to die and need constant care wherever he is. I think the government just want to make an example of him to stop anyone else thinking they can do the same.

How many years was he supposed to serve, how many has he served?

If we start feeling sorry for old lags who are locked up (for life meaning life in many cases) we are missing the point.

If they don't commit crimes in the first place, they don't get locked up. If they spend most of the years, when they were supposed to be locked up, on the run and having fun in Rio de Janeiro, why should we feel sorry for them when they finally get round to serving their time?

Donald Neilson, the Black Panther, is past 70, and is suffering from Motor Neurone disease. He is in jail as he killed four people (the Shropshire heiress, Lesley Whittle, and three postmasters who found him burgling their premises). I doubt whether there is one person who can feel sorry for this individual (no matter how sick he has become), and I cannot see why anyone would want to see him released.

As with Neilson, so with Biggs. They have committed crimes, been sentenced according to the law, and should expect no mercy on grounds of age or anything else.

They got really big sentences he has 28 years left to serve he won't be alive much longer. His crimes weren't as bad as the first robber, a man was hit during the robbery and died some years later as a result and was never the same again, it wasn't Biggs who hit him though. That's not the point however as he was involved in the robbery if that hadn't happened the guy would have lived a full life.

I have to say that I can see both sides of this. I think that people really have trouble sympathizing with him simply because he eluded justice for so long and lived the high life. If he had served his original sentence, he wouldn't be in jail right now. On the other hand, justice must always be tempered with mercy.

The people who are most likely to suffer needlessly are Biggs' family members. No matter what yer dad got up to in his younger days, you still don't want to think of him suffering.

If I had to make the decision, I would probably lean towards being more merciful to a pitiful, dying man. I would understand if others felt that justice required that he not be released, but isn't the reason behind incarceration no longer existent? We put people in jail for two reasons. We want to keep them separate from society for the safety of society and partially as punishment for their deeds, they aren't allowed to live in society. We also want to effect rehabilitation.

Since he can't be a danger to society, and since he can't enjoy the benefits of society even if he were released; and since he cannot be rehabilitated nor would rehabilitation have any effect on him or society due to his impending death, there is really no reason to keep him in prison except as revenge upon him.

We like to think of our modern civilization as being beyond such primitive motivations as revenge.

So how do you feel about the 150 year sentence handed down to Bernie Madoff? Even if he were only 20 yrs old, there's very little chance he'd serve even half of that.

myLot reputation of 99/100. nancyrowina (2228)   ranked 616 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

They could let him out on a tag so he couldn't leave wherever he was released to but at least he would be with his family, he had a daughter who's growing up he missed because he was Brazil for all those years. It's his own fault I know but it also punishes her too.

myLot reputation of 79/100. Rollo1 (2827)   ranked 3,835 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Well, in the words of Gilbert and Sullivan, I think we should "let the punishment fit the crime". In this case I think the man should be sentenced to work all his days to pay restitution to all those who were swindled. Of course, he couldn't possibly ever complete that task, but let's have him get a running start on it. In this case though, putting him in jail to remove him from society does serve the purpose of removing a danger to society. A scammer who is in jail can't continue to scam innocent people. His punishment for robbing others of their worldly goods is to be deprived of his and to spend his life isolated from society. However, if in 20 years the man is blind, feeble, deaf and about to die, I would still say release him to his family to die at home. At that point, his continued incarceration serves no purpose.

I have no time for him. His crime was certainly not victimless and whilst Biggs didn't hit the driver of the train, he nevertheless condoned it. Maybe if he had not escaped and then rubbed the UK authority's nose in it I would have felt more generous. But he has shown no remorse. His incapacity doesn't have any bearing I think. He ran the risks and got caught. It's the same argument as ex concentration camp guards. Is the fact that they are now all so old, and it was such a long time ago, mean that there's no point in pursuing them anymore?

myLot reputation of 99/100. nancyrowina (2228)   ranked 616 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Yes you make a good point they can't let him get away with escaping from prison then being so public about rubbing their noses in it.

well he's not gonna go out and rob any more trains is he? he's way too old for that now...so yeah he should be released, he's ill and he's old, he may have escaped all them years ago but he's served his sentense by hiding from the authorities, ducking and diving, so i think he should be realeased and allowed home to die with dignity, he may not have that long left so i think he should be with his family to live his final days/months/years with them, he's not going to harm anyone or rob anyone, so why keep him in jail...there's no point....

myLot reputation of 99/100. nancyrowina (2228)   ranked 616 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

I think they should release him on a tag to his families home so he can't leave so at least he gets to spend his final days or even hours as it will be at this rate with his family.

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (14489)   ranked 26 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Even if he did go out and rob trains he'd only get a meagre sentence. The justice system is a joke in the UK. If he had done it this century he'd have got a few years max! Or sent on a holiday courtesy of the taxpayer as most criminals are these days.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  3 years ago

yes nancy, i agree they should tag him just to keep en eye on him, however, he is frail now and i cannot see him getting up to much, he's a very ill man so the least they could do is allow him to be with his folks so he can die with them around him...

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  3 years ago

exactly wolfie, your right, there's people in jail that have done worse than him and got less time, the UK justice system is a joke, seriously, and it's the likes of us who pay to keep these people fed and watered, i say just let him go home and die with his family around him, they are wasting alot of money keeping a terminally ill man in jail, if they did release him, he would only end up in a rest home so there wouldn't really be much difference because he will still have people around him keeping an eye on him, it's not like he's gonna do another robery because he aint got the strength any more, his time is almost up, so the least they could do is let him go.

myLot reputation of 99/100. nancyrowina (2228)   ranked 616 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

apparently at the time it happened the robbers lawyers were shocked by the size of their sentences, It was just to make an example of them because they robbed the Queen effectively. it is wrong as like you say men who've threatened people with guns get less time these days.

That's the mockery of the UK justice system for you! It's so hypercritical, so unbalanced, so cuckoo and so senseless. It probably costs the taxpayer more money to keep him locked up than it would to release him. Yet the justice system dishes out lenient sentences to rapists, murderers etc and offer no deterant to would be recidivists, the laws in the UK is a complete joke. They'd rather send youths on a holiday trip or put them in luxury accommodation than actually punish them, yet they are coming down hard on Ronnie Biggs, there is no rhyme or reason to it. If he had done the crime today he would have got a few years and the sentence halfed! So it just doesn't make sense to me to keep him locked up, what are they trying to prove or what do they stand to gain out of keeping him imprisoned? Because I certainly don't know! It seems they have different rules for different people!

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  3 years ago

yep wolfie it makes alot of sense what your saying, just wanted to let ya know that i completely agree, what's the point in keeping him there? it's stupid. like i said above, there's people in jail who have done worse and got less time, it's completely hilarious, at times i wish that we had the same justice system as USA because they come down heavy and hand out the max penalties, over here it's like a holiday for them and a slap on the wrist, the criminals of today are living a life of luxury on OUR money, so instead of spending all that money on a sick old man, let him go and put the real crims behind bars with the max sentense. it's ridiculous. so yep, i agree with you whole heartedly. well said...thumbup

It's because it's such a high profile case, if he was an unknown robber they probably would have let him go on a tag straight away. But because he's well known he'll die in prison like other high profile prisoners have just to make an example of them. It's sickening in this day and age our homes secratary is still too scared to be the one to release Ronnie Bigg's

Ronnie is an old man now, i think he should be out of jail. He came back after all because he wanted to die in this country, isnt that patriotic enough do be free. If ya look at it one way if it wasnt for the robbery films would not have been made based on this real life story.

Men who've done worse and are more capable of doing it again have been released in this country, it's only because it's a high profile case all this fuss is being made.
