Happy 4th of July To All Americans And Filipinos^^ |
| |
| The 4th of July is a big day for all Americans. Everyone knows it's their Independence Day. But did you guys know that it was also an Independence Day for Filipinos? The Philippines was an American colony from 1898-1941. In World War II, it was overran and occupied by Japan. And then it reverted back to American rule when Japan surrendered in 1944. On July 4, 1946 the US Government formally granted independence to the Filipinos and the Philippines became an independent republic. And so our Independence Day was originally 4th of July. In the 1960's, then President Diosdado Macapagal renamed Philippine Independence Day as June 12, in honor of the original Filipino declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. President Macapagal then declared July 4 as Filipino-American Friendship Day. So Happy Independence Day to all Americans! And to all American and Pinoy mylotters, Happy Fil-American Friendship Day! | | I read somewhere that President Diosdado Macapagal did this change because he was displeased with how the U.S. government then was exerting their control over our country's political and economic policies... well, whatever his reason was... i think that June 12 is indeed the genuine Independence Day of Filipinos... since we were under Spanish rule for more than 300 years... and July 4 was like just patterned after the Independence Day of the Americans... | | | | | | |

| | Symbolically, you're right June 12 was our Independence Day. But in reality we didn't gain independence on that day because if I recall it right Spain immediately ceded the Philippines, Guam and some other territories to the US. So we were passed from one colonial master to another and the declaration of independence at Malolos was just a symbolic revolutionary gesture. | | | |

| | We did gain out Independence during that time... but it was just not recognized by the international community... immediately after the declaration... Pres. Aguinaldo send representatives to different countries... even to the so called Treaty of Paris... but since during that time Spain was the fading superpower and the US was the upcoming superpower... no nation in the world dared to give recognition to an archiepelago that is the object of the Spanish-American war... So the representatives of Pres. Aguinaldo were ignored... not met... and left outside the door waiting for nothing... but for an ordinary Filipino during that time... thought and believed that we did gain our Independence... but it was short lived... | | | |

| | Emotions were quite high during that time... and this was like a period in our history when we were united as one... i have all my respect for Andres Bonifacio... but even if he was the father of the Katipunan... Emilio Aguinaldo was the one who led us to victory... | | | |
