United have Signed Owen | | What are your thoughts on United's latest signing: Michael Owen (a.k.a. the former scouse):)
I think he's a good striker and I've always admired him (laughed at him when he joined NU after Real Madrid abandoned him), but now I just want him to do good. It's the perfect opportunity to end his career with a bang!
I mean when he started he was just a bright star and then he sort of died out after his move to Real Madrid.
Also when I read his comments on the bbc interview, I was rather pleased. He said the when SAF asked him, he was extremely surprised and agreed without a moments thought.
I mean, we can definitely expect good things from him because he sees this as a great opportunity and plus United have so many english players that he'd probably feel very at home.
I think that we can expect an illustrious partnership between him and Wazza.
Well, what are your thoughts fellow Man Unitedians?

jshekhar (1157) | 6 months ago | Hello friend, let us not forget that we were willing to spend on Benzema but we lost the race to MADrid. The specialty of our club lies in the fact that we can sign ordinary players and turn them into exceptional ones.
Ronaldo cost 12 million pounds in 2003 and he's fetched us 80m pounds six years later. Now that's a really good return, ain't it? I hope there's another exceptional player waiting to take the footballing world by storm in the next two seasons.

| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | deewinc, you are underestimating Fergie's intentions. He knows he canNOT replace Tevez or Ronaldo. You don't get players like that very often.
He appreciates each player for his own value and as a result he can get the maximum out of them as he knows and values their individual strengths and weaknesses and when it is time to make adjustments. For example, he deploys Rooney as a second striker, defender, midfielder to great effect, he switched Ronaldo to striker and also when he moved scoles to a striker positon after Cantona was injured in the 95-96 season scholes scored i believe 16 goals!
And your other point: Ferguson doesn't wants to spend? Who dashed out 30million pounds for berbatov?
Trust me, Ferguson knows HOW to spend, he knows that you don't buy a team, (like some team in SPain) but that each player is different, that a player who is a huge success in another league wont necessarily work like magic for your team.

| | 2. jshekhar (1157) | 6 months ago | Hello friend, I am with you on this one. The most impressive thing about our club is that they sign average/good players and then turn them into exceptional players. This was the story with Ronaldo, Beckham, Stam.. the list goes on..
I'm sure Owen will find his feet at Manchester in no time and he will achieve his best.

| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | True, that is what Manchester United is about, not just spending and forking out millions for established players.
I like your examples, but my favourite example is Ryan Giggs, Fergie picked him off the street.....and look at giggsy now and what he has achieved with United.
We, the fans must give owen a chance, i'm sure he'll be very keen to prove himself.

He is a mere shadow of his former self, not that I thought he was a superstar back when he played for Liverpool: to me Michael Owen has always been an average player even as a Liverpool striker who had easy chances thanks to David Beckhams awesome passing ability and Hesky's height and heading ability. Michael Owen was pretty fast, but for 5 years (probably more) Michael Owen hasn't done anything, he's slow, old and his career has been injury prone.
I am disappointed with this signing, I was hoping Sir Alex Ferguson was going to buy a striker better than Tevez, since we now have £80,000,000 to use in the transfer market. I can honestly say Man Utd have been down graded in class with this signing, I hope Sir Alex was not drunk when he gave the order to sign Owen. Maybe Owen was brought in as a striker to strengthen the reserves? When will Sir Alex Ferguson buy a replacement for Tevez? Owen can never replace Tevez, not in a billions years.

| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | Firstly, owen was a free agent.
Secondly, as I said before, Owen is not coming to REPLACE Tevez, judge him at his own worth and his individual skills.
Owen is 29, does that make him old??
And what do you mean by, "David Beckham's awesome passing ability and Hesky's height and heading ability?" What does this have to do with Owen's Liverpool career? Or were you referring to his national career?
I have watched Owen at Newcastle last season, and when he was fully fit and he played, he played well and scored some magnificent goals for them.
Look at what he was able to achieve at a top 4 English football club (liverpool): 158 goals in 297 appearances, don't you think that Owen having the opportunity to play for a top4 club at a time where he never expected it, at a time when he was receiving offers from Hull and Stoke City, do you not think that he will try ever so more to prove himself to Ferguson?
Well that is just what I think, only Owen himself can prove us right or wrong, whatever the case.
And I'm not keen on United spending wildly either, don't remember that the club is in debt 800million pounds or something.

Revan2009 (223) | 6 months ago | I know Owen is a free agent. Although you didn't say Owen is trying to replace Tevez, Man Utd signed Owen to do what Tevez used to do (Should I say tried to do): which is score goals for Man Utd. So yeah Michael Owen is meant to be a replacement for Tevez, both are strikers, both will be substitutes.
I don't know how much a old player can change in one season, but I know you have to be super human to jump to the heights of how Man Utd play in one season, with hundred different injuries, loss of speed and skill. Michael Owen is a player that can't play without a lot of support, something a Man Utd player must do in order to start games. I was reffering to how Emile Hesky (played with Owen at Liverpool) provided Owen with the headed passing so that he has a 1 v 1 against the goalie, in which case 9/10 strikers would be the favourites. Michael Owen is the most over rated footballer I've ever known. The problem with people is that they never credit players such as Heskey who do the hardest part so that Owen gets tap ins. For England he had Emile and Beckham to provide him with pinpoint passing. Give any other average footballer that kind of service, then they too would score as much as Owen.
Owen is old, he's 29, most (except the best) footballers retire in their early 30s. Michael Owen has lost speed, therefore making him useless.
I'm hoping Antonio Valencia and Sergio Aguero will provide Man Utd supporters with much needed injection of quality young players. Man Utd has no place for people who have past their best years: because we're not Newcastle!

| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | I still think that Owen isn't as washed up, sure he picks up quite a bit of injuries but I don't think he's finished. I agree that to play at united (being involved in CL,Pl,FA,LC) takes a lot, but who knows?
Anyway I'm hoping that Owen does well, no one can deny he has got skills. You also mention that he doesn't do the hard work, i.e. he only does tap-ins, he doesn't actually, throughout his career he has scored some marvelous goals for 'pool.
Honestly, even if Owen was a tap-in master, what's so bad about that, look at what players like Inzaghi and Van Nistelrooy have achieved with whatever club(s) they've played with and how they were able to maximize their individual strengths for the benefit of the club.

| | | 5. soap17 (5) | 6 months ago | I think this is a decent piece of business, as long as we keep owen on a play and pay contract the potential losses are pretty minimal and chance that we may get the good owen of 3/4 years ago makes this well worth it. Although he barely played for newcastle he still got goals, had a good strike rate and i can see him easily matching tevez's 15 goals from last season. Newcastle's physio team seem pretty suspect at times and owen could probably regain some of his fitness at Man Utd

| | 6. vivekasokan (374) | 6 months ago | owen is a good player.. but the main reason that tevez left man utd is because they dumped him in most of their games after the arrival of berba..so why r they taking an another striker..owen ll be more like a substitute player in man u.
| |
| |
|
|
| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | I agree berba brought with him a lot of competition for tevez, but i think Ferguson did well to manage such a large squad filled with quality players, its not an easy thing to do. Keeping players happy is important, but unfortunately, Tevez although he was turning out to be like a new supersub like solskjaer, i don't think he quite fancied being that alone. He wanted to have starts, more starts really.
But United do need a striker, especially now that Tevez is gone, which means that ferguson only has 2 regular 1st team strikers to choose from: Berba and Wazza, and perchance one gets injured he doesn't think its quite right to give Macheda or Wellbeck the regular spot yet, so instead he goes for experience: Owen.
Owen, won't mind being a sub and having a start now and then, because I don't think that he has the fitness to start and play through all 38 pl games, so that won't be such a bother to him, plus there is fa cup, league cup and CL.
ANyway, I can't wait for the Pl to restart, I'm suffocating without it.....having nothing to look forward to on weekends and the odd weekday game.

| | 7. amibotea (133) | 6 months ago | I guess is a good choice because Owen is one of the best players, remember, he won the golden ball under the age of 20 so think what talent can keep this player, but all he needs is a key to open that, and I think Ferguson is the best. Down with Berbatov, up with Owen
| |
| |
|
|
| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | Yeah, I mean what better place is there for Owen to regain his old spark other than Old Trafford?I think he'd prove a positive force at united during his stay here. But, i don't think that we should "down" Berba, he is a different player than Owen, and he certainly possesses very unique skills that I've never really seen another footballer display, he really is quite clever, all he needs to do is to apply it more often.
But I think our season will progress well this year despite the many doubts

amibotea (133) | 6 months ago | and I hate Berbatov, he is like C.Ronaldo, full of arogance
| |
|
|
| Neyr90 (54) | 6 months ago | Well, I don't hate either players, even Ron who gets on my nerves sometimes. But I think you misjudge berbatov, he seems arrogant but really he is not. If you are saying this with pavyluchenko's comments in mind, don't, it's a load of tosh. Anyone who has heard Berbatov speak, will hear the humility in his voice and his desire to succeed at the club. I've watched a few of his interviews and he really is pretty cool.
He just doesn't let his emotions show, so it comes off as if he is arrogant, lazy...uninterested etc. He knows this, i think he mentioned it in a UEFA CL Magazine episode.
Anyway, I'll like any player as long as they do their jobs at OT.

| | 8. suparnodatta (297) | 6 months ago | well i am really disappointed with this buy....you can expect him to be out injured for 3 or 4 months in a season....u cant ever how he will perform....yes he is a good striker but he doesn't really goes with Manunited..he cant be the replacement for Ronaldo or Tevez....they are much much better than him....he is a 29 year old guy and u cant really expect him to develop at this stage of his career.ya it must be good for him to play for a club like manchester but i am not sure thats its the right thing for manutd.May be he is a good finisher and may be he find good spaces in the penalty box as Fergy suggests but thats not enough is it?
