Debit or Credit?  |

I'm writing this on behalf of cashiers everywhere because I am sure it is an annoyance to others besides myself. I'm also sure that the customer does not realize how annoying it is. If it educates even one customer here then my time in writing this is well spent. Ok...you hand the cashier your card. She goes, "debit or credit?" You answer with either, " doesn't matter" or "Whatever is easier". For all you customer's out there that see yourself here...stop with that response. First of all...it doesn't matter to us either. 2nd...neither is easier. For us it is just a matter of what button we hit to run your card. the hardest part for me is thinking for you...I don't want to. The ideal customer hands you his card and tells you what he wants. I say "debit or credit?" so so much each nite that sometimes a customer will hand me a 20 and I'll just say "debit or credit?" Sometimes they even answer me. It's really not a big deal but if you had to say it 500 times per nite you'd be trying to educate people also.

It ALWAYS does to me and I only use my cards as credit because it's always the fastest and it saves time with the PIN, which I hate to use anyway and is always advised to be the most hazardous for theft.

sid556 (10549) | 5 months ago | Hi mechanic...read again. I am the cashier. It does not matter to me what the customer chooses. some cards can only be run as credit and others have the choice. I don't know one from another. It's an extremely busy and fast paced store. Our card machine is slow as it is. If the customer knows what they want...just speeds up the procedure.

sid556 (10549) | 5 months ago | Thanks for seeing that Garden. I don't think they even think about it. They really do think that one way is easier for me than another or that one way is quicker. Really it isn't but it may make a difference to them. Some banks charge for using one or the other and all banks are different. If they don't care, I usually choose debit.

13. Strongheart (1079) | 5 months ago | I can understand your frustration and actually appreciate that cashiers ask me and I DO respond with a choice. There are some banks out there that charge cardholders for using the card as a debit card because it opens the ability to receive cash back while credit option merely authorizes the transaction. My current bank doesn't charge for either option, only if cash back is received and the merchant is not part of the network, so it makes no difference but my last bank hit me for $0.25 every time I was foolish enough to say debit!

sid556 (10549) | 5 months ago | Thank you...that is all I'm looking for...a straight answer to a simple question. best of all is when the customer hands over the card and states what it is...debit or credit....smooth fast transaction. If I ask...more time...If I have to decide for them...more time. Then I have to tell them what I chose..more time. Then if I chose debit which I most often do, I have to direct them to enter their pin #...more time. Sometimes I have to grab their attention as they are talking to the guy behind them.....more time. Then often times they have to dig thru their wallets to look up their pin...more time. Sometimes if I see they are distracted, I'll just do credit and then get the complaints of how they get charged and all...it'd be so so much better all around for everyone if people just paid attention when the got to the counter and if using a card, knew what they wanted.

They just say the total amount that is due and then I hand them money or just a credit or debit card. I usually pay with Credit Card because my bank charges me a fee every time I use my debit card.

sid556 (10549) | 5 months ago | so the cashier just runs it as a credit without asking? My boss gets charged a fee on credit so I do ask. If they are buying scratch tickets....has to be run as a debit. the fee my boss pays on credit cards is greater than what he earns on selling the tickets.

18. vivasuzi (1844) | 5 months ago | Well as someone who doesn't believe in using Debit ever, I'm not one of those people causing you problems:) For me it's credit everytime. I wish they didn't have cards that did both. It should either be a clear debit card that says debit on it, or a clear credit card. I don't get why cards do both.
Anyway, hope you taught one person to answer the question!

However, from your point of view, the problem though trivial but is irritating. I can feel it. There are so many small things in life that one side bother less but the other side who has to face it repeatedly understands the irritation it creates. Your's is a nice suggestion and people are expected to give the reply as they are asked for just to help you and other cashiers like you. They are also expected to know what they are using. This small thing can a long way in making life easier for some other people and we should not hesitate to do so. Happy lotting

20. UK_Shree (1843) | 5 months ago | Lol, well it seems in the UK that is not how it is done. When you hand over a card, it can only be credit or debit. It cannot be both and you cannot choose what you want it to be. You can only have a credit, or debit card. We have no '2-in-1' cards over here.
