Debit or Credit?

I'm really surprised, Sid, that it doesn't make any difference to you. It ALWAYS does to me and I only use my cards as credit because it's always the fastest and it saves time with the PIN, which I hate to use anyway and is always advised to be the most hazardous for theft.

It may not be a big deal, but it is. They need to be responsible for their own choices. I think this is a good, educational post. Many times people really should put themselves in the position of others. Use their brains.

I can understand your frustration and actually appreciate that cashiers ask me and I DO respond with a choice. There are some banks out there that charge cardholders for using the card as a debit card because it opens the ability to receive cash back while credit option merely authorizes the transaction. My current bank doesn't charge for either option, only if cash back is received and the merchant is not part of the network, so it makes no difference but my last bank hit me for $0.25 every time I was foolish enough to say debit!

Oh, I understand why you're trying to tell here! At first, I thought of the title whether we should use debit or credit card I only use either one of it at one time... either debit or credit and most of the time, I prefer to use cash. Settle the problem and the cashier has no problem to understand me if I say, 'Cash'. As a buyer, I also hate this situation where people use credit card just for $10 purchase or less than that. To wait at the counter when the cashier swipes the card and gets approval, I think I can just leave the counter and look for another one more stuff to buy. Anyway, if the cashier asks me that question, 'debit or credit' I will tell them in full - please swipe my credit card!

The cashiers where I live don't really ask that question when I am purchasing stuff. They just say the total amount that is due and then I hand them money or just a credit or debit card. I usually pay with Credit Card because my bank charges me a fee every time I use my debit card.

That is something to think about. I hadn't thought about it. I am glad you brought this to my attention. Poor cashiers. Funny about handing the 20 and all. I will try to remember to tell which I want from now on.

Good point, and I'm someone who hates that answere period. Plus if people understood they'd all be saying "credit please".

Well as someone who doesn't believe in using Debit ever, I'm not one of those people causing you problems:) For me it's credit everytime. I wish they didn't have cards that did both. It should either be a clear debit card that says debit on it, or a clear credit card. I don't get why cards do both.

Anyway, hope you taught one person to answer the question!

HiSid556, in our country, people mostly use cash and I am not exception, so the problem did not come to my mind. However, from your point of view, the problem though trivial but is irritating. I can feel it. There are so many small things in life that one side bother less but the other side who has to face it repeatedly understands the irritation it creates.
Your's is a nice suggestion and people are expected to give the reply as they are asked for just to help you and other cashiers like you. They are also expected to know what they are using. This small thing can a long way in making life easier for some other people and we should not hesitate to do so.

Lol, well it seems in the UK that is not how it is done. When you hand over a card, it can only be credit or debit. It cannot be both and you cannot choose what you want it to be. You can only have a credit, or debit card. We have no '2-in-1' cards over here.
