I'm writing this on behalf of cashiers everywhere because I am sure it is an annoyance to others besides myself. I'm also sure that the customer does not realize how annoying it is. If it educates even one customer here then my time in writing this is well spent. Ok...you hand the cashier your card. She goes, "debit or credit?" You answer with either, " doesn't matter" or "Whatever is easier". For all you customer's out there that see yourself here...stop with that response. First of all...it doesn't matter to us either. 2nd...neither is easier. For us it is just a matter of what button we hit to run your card. the hardest part for me is thinking for you...I don't want to. The ideal customer hands you his card and tells you what he wants. I say "debit or credit?" so so much each nite that sometimes a customer will hand me a 20 and I'll just say "debit or credit?" Sometimes they even answer me. It's really not a big deal but if you had to say it 500 times per nite you'd be trying to educate people also.

In Canada, our debit or credit cards are different and usually what I find is even when the debit and credit cards are the same, depending on where you are the cashier will assume that you want to use debit. This usually happens on Senior's Day because many Seniors do not have credit cards and I remember one time, I took out my credit card along with my debit card to pay for some stuff and the cashier, since I was a senior, grabbed the debit card instead. Needless to say, I did not have that much money left in my bank account after that and I had to wait until I got my pension.
I therefore never say "It does not matter," because whereas I can wait 15 to 25 days for the credit card statement, the money in debit immediately comes out of my bank account when I use a debit card.

It is a good idea for the reasons that you mentioned not to leave the choice up to the cashier. Also some banks charge for debit and others will charge you for credit and some not at all. I tend to choose debit when they are undecided because my boss gets a fee for all credit transactions.

Here in Canada, most banks and credit unions, seniors do not get charged a fee for using a debit card. And since as I said, many seniors just use cash or do not have that much in the banks - just enough for rent etc. there is the assumption that they will get out the debit card. Trouble is that each bank has their own time when the fees are no longer taken off, anywhere from 50 up. And sometimes the credit card and the debit card look almost the same, so if the senior has bad eyesight, she might hand the cashier the wrong one.
It is all right with a credit card, but when someone just has enough in the bank for that month, all that money may be taken out.

There is another advantage to using credit rather then debit cards. I subscribe to those free money advice newsletters, and in one the author told that the advantage of credit cards over debit cards in regard to points. Now he was American and I am Canadian, but the principal is the same. If you pay off your accounts each month and if you are out shopping and one time, you buy $40 on a credit card and one time, you only have your debit card, so you buy $40 via the debit card. You both pay them off, but whereas you will get 2 points with your credit card, you will only get 1 point with your debit card. It makes a big difference. and thanks for the best response. happy
