Update: South Carolina Serial Killer

Authorities are investigating whether a man shot by police in Gastonia, North Carolina is the serial killer responsible for five deaths in Gaffney, South Carolina over the past week.

At 3:am this morning police responded to a burglary call in which the suspect and his vehicle fit the description of the S.C. Serial Killer. The man provided a fake I.D. before pulling a gun and firing on officers. One officer was shot in the foot but is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect died on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police at this time have not confirmed the case is closed and residents are urged to remain vigilant until such time that confirmation of the killer is made.

The reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer has been increased to $34,500 mostly in part thanks to local business people who want the killer caught.

"Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on the recent string of homicides in the Gaffney area:

"We've all watched and been shocked by news of the recent murders in Cherokee County," Gov. Sanford said.

"I've been briefed by Chief Reggie Lloyd on the situation today. I'd ask South Carolinians to join my family and me in prayer for the grieving families of the victims, and to thank all levels of law enforcement who have been and continue to work on this case.""

A workshop is scheduled Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m., to help residents cope with fear, stress of shootings will be held in the conference room on the Cherokee County branch campus of Spartanburg Community College.
