my mum keeps her dogs in a kennel and they have a little run, but i do agree that dogs should have freedom but the reason why they in a kennel is because they have ran out the front door and everytime some one is at the door my mum had to get all 3 dogs in the kitchen so she could open the door, plus they put hairs everywhere and would eat our shoes.

We don't currently have a dog right now. But when we did have dogs we never tied them. They were always in our house with us. When we put the out to pee they would be hooked on a line for the few minutes they were out but they weren't tied all day long. I don't get having a dog if all you are going to do is tie it to a dog house and let it go. The whole point of having a pet is to enjoy it and give it a good home. Not to tie it out in your backyard forgotten.

I usually let my dogs roaming in the house when I am here around in the house. I take them out for run every afternoon, train them to poop and pee every time they have opportunity to do in the afternoon. I also take them to different areas in the morning to do P & P briefly before I leave for the day.

I rarely tie them or put them in the kennel cages. I have a baby-guard fence that braces between door arch, they can roam around in a room, their own bed pads, toys, water bowls. They rarely play in the day and they sleep -- NO problem for me and I am grateful for this. They wait paitently to go outside when I return. They get excited to go outside. It works for me!!

My dog is really never on a leash. He has free will to go outside in the big backyard and run around. He also has free will in the house. The only time he is on a leash if I take him for a walk around the block. That happens very little now because I live on hills and he is now 11 years old and comes back a bit out of breath and it scares me.

We raise and train dogs so we have a kennel. The pens are 18' long x 6' wide with attached 6' square "bedrooms". One of these runs per dog. They also have an attached fenced yard to play in. Just shy of an acre in size. http://www.ironwoodkennel.com shows pictures of our kennel building, etc. Make sure you check out the 'property pics' page so you can also see the HUGE pond, aka "Lake Ironwood", we had excavated just for our beloved dogs as well. Hey, they need their exercise, too. ;-) Yes, we love them that much!

I do not believe in chaining dogs which aren't being supervised. So many horror stories... Supervised, I see no problem. Being contained is safer than being left 'free'. As we have coonhounds and do train them for hunting, our dogs do, very much, get their 'freedom'. It is scary and dogs die every year because of this freedom (thank God, none of ours yet. *knock on wood*). We take extra precautions by putting tracking collars on every dog when they go out and they have been properly trained to respect traffic and road safety rules. Still, accidents can happen.

What they say with coonhounds is true of many dogs... "When the nose is open, the ears are shut!"

I have never heard the saying "when the nose it open the ears are shut" but how true it is!!!! I recently bought a house, and specifically got one with a fenced in yard for my dog, Chelsea. Chelsea is a rescued dog, we found her in the mountains when we were fishing one weekend. She was starving and dirty, and afraid. I honestly think someone brought her there and dropped her off. Anyway, the house had a standard height fence, 4 1/2 feet or something. Well, when faced with an obstacle, Chelsea decided she had no problem clearing that thing! So, anytime there was a rabbit or any other creature, she was off! She'd usually have a second thought and jump back in, but when she first caught sight or smell of the animal, she was oblivious to anyone else around her! We built a 6 foot cedar fence a few weeks ago. It was pretty expensive, we have a pretty big yard, but well worth it. I love that she can run around and play and I don't have to worry about her jumping out whether or not I'm outside with her. After all, we made sure the house had a big enough yard that she would have room to roam around and run and play for HER benefit, not ours; so now she can!!!

Dogs are my favourite pet... i have my dog with me all the time... he is free to roam and live his life the way we humans live only expection is that i have to take him out for his toilet process. my dog wakes me up in the morning by licking my feet and then he has his breakfast with me and if i dont serve him then he wont eat it.. he is loved and cared by all in the house but he is my special pet.

i need to chain by dog at times, especially when there are many people walking on sidewalks. My dog's breed is st. bernard and she can really jump over our fence and even break our gate. people here are scared of big dogs. Eventhough mine's not biting, people are still scared of her big, deep bark. I know she doesn't like to be put on chain but I have to. :(

I have both. I believe dogs need boundaries and in our neighbborhood, none of the yards are fenced in. I usually put the large dogs on chains to keep people from coming into our yard. The small ones go in the kennel when it is clean. Otherwise, I will put them on a chain too. I will always make sure that there is a large one out with a small one.

Well, if your dog is not really friendly dog, or biting dog or an irritable dog, you better chain it to avoid trouble with your neighbors and your visitors coming in your house...happy
